Love this course
Have loved this golf course since it opened! Not quite as well maintained as it used to be, but a great challenging layout makes it one of my favourite courses.... If only green fees were more affordable!!! Thankfully they are occasionally featured on GOLFNOW at better rates.
1st time
very much a risk
/reward type of course. if you can hit it long and hit your target line, birdies are available. miss and bogey is waiting.
the wind played havoc and always seemed to push the ball to a water hazard.
the course was in good condition. the greens were great and true. the staff were exceptional.
Beautiful course
I had heard that this course was a renown course in the Ottawa area. Did it ever live up to its name. The course was in beautiful condition, the scenery was outstanding! The fairways, tee boxes, rough and greens were in spectacular shape for this time of the spring. The only area for improvement that I saw would be the bunkers, the rims and edges just need to be cut, but I would expect that to be done within the next couple weeks in time for the summer. In conclusion it is definitely one of the nicest courses in Ottawa and I recommend it to anyone.
Marshes - May 10, 2015
For early May course is in good shape, greens as expected are a bit shaggier but really not that bad, they will be great when they get cut or rolled.
Booked as a single and apparently they don't allow singles out on course. Strange to me but I guess I can understand that. Or actually no, I don't understand that. I work at a course and I've never told someone they can't be a single player.
None of the holes have yardage markers at the tee box so you will need your scorecard. Especially on par 3's!
I enjoy the layout of the marshes, it is fun to play just hard to justify the $110 they want during the summer season. I would gladly pay $42.99 for golf with cart anytime as I did yesterday.
Top course in Ottawa region IMHO! A+++
If you haven't tried The Marshes, you are missing out!
Fantastic course, great facilities, amazing staff! You won't be disappointed!
Good course worth the money!
Course in very good condition with true green speed. Great staff on course with good service. Drive range is one of the best in Ottawa.
Grate Time Was Had By All
Everything was great but the sunny skies was it for
me on this outstanding fall day...
Thank you
Ron
Best practice facilities in Ottawa
Great layout but the greens used to be much faster and I wish they still had the GPS on the carts.
HEDEH
Average course with high fees.
This year I have golfed at 48 different golf courses around Ottawa and played 100 games and this is the only course I have had an issue with...
Played with daughter visiting from Switzerland as a twosome. With 5 minutes to go a worker told us he was playing with us. I told him my daughter had new clubs and we would prefer to play alone.
Two males were right behind us waiting to tee off but worker was not willing to play with them.
Worker told me he shot 72 earlier at the Marshes. So why would you want to play with a man with his daughter on vacation when a spot is open right after....
Need I mention that on hole 3 when I was about to hit off I sensed something behind me and when I turned around the worker was within 3 feet providing top dressing.....
This continued throughout the round ie the fairways, the greens and tee boxes....
After the round I told management what happened and they said they would get back to me. I was surprised they did not call me back and after waiting over a week I called them back.
Subsequently, the assistant pro told me he and the Head pro were sorry for the bad experience but they had no control over who I was joined up with to play....
So while their PR claims to provide a "fine golf experience" they will not honour their commitment when an employee ruins it.....
This course charges top dollars in the Ottawa area and from my experience over the last two seasons, courses like Loch March, eQuinelle, Le Sorcier, and Gatineau etc are better and cheaper....
My impression is that because I was playing a discounted green fee, they were not prepared to do anything for me and my daughters "bad experience"......
they resent golf now (like others)
Snubbed in proshop and then forced to wait half hour on empty tee box for other golfnow pair to show. Clearly this is a policy to penalize golfnow users. Seen it elsewhere. Not a good advert for course which seems to me to be the point of aligning w golf now. No rush to return even tho course is great and decent twilite pricing available.
Easy Back Nine
Course was on great shape, was nearly on pace for the round of my life, but eventually Mother Nature and her 80 km/hr gusts got to me.
I'd love to play again on a calm day.
Unfortunately this course is out of my price range unless I find more hot deals.
Marshes in September
Course was in good shape overall. Greens were soft but smooth with an average to above average speed. All greens were in good shape with a few dead spots.
Fairways were good but again soft after all the rain so the ball did not run out. Very few damaged areas and some evidence of 'dollar spot'. Sand traps are in poor condition with some water runoff damage. The lack of rakes hurts the conditions and there is evidence of poor upkeep as weeds are growing in some of the traps. Overall not good.
At the discounted Golf Now price probably worth the $65 because of the design but more than that you could expect better traps and tees. (and fewer geese and theirdroppings).
This is the second time the Golf Now site failed to work so that I had to call the phone number on the site to book a game.
The Marshes has declined
I took two guests from out of town to play what was once a premier facility but has fallen into the category of faded roses. In particular the bunkers were terrible and in some cases unplayable dues to number of things but primarily because they had not been dressed by the grounds crew in several days. A main factor is that this course puts rakes on the carts and not near the bunkers so many folks walk into bunkers without rakes and leave them filled with footprints and such.
The greens were fuzzy whereas they used to be among the best in the city and the tee-blocks quite ragged.
When I mentioned this to the Pro-Shop afterwards I was met with the kind of attitude that screams indifference at best.
I strongly suggest that The Marshes is now an over-priced course in need of new management who can rebuild it and restore it to the place it was and until then is very poor value for the money.
The Marshes
I enjoyed this course. There is a nice variety of hole designs that will challenge most of your shots. Very nice sand to play out of. One or two things I would recommend to the management is:
(1) Signage at the tee boxes with a hole lay-out picture, yardage, etc. would be nice.
(2) At $100+ a round, I expected GPS on the carts. At the very least, a picture (and some "hole strategy tips") should be included on the scorecard.
They need directions, or maps or GPS or.....
Really nice if somewhat pricey course. They used to have GPS in the carts a few years ago. They need them back or they need layout booklets or they need hole maps at the tee boxes. Many holes it's impossible to know where fairways turn on dog legs, what the yardage is to hazards etc. it's pretty much a guessing game on many holes. I find this slows play and takes away from what would otherwise be a really interesting course. Also, took over half an hour to get a single beer in the restaurant, would have had two but couldn't stay all afternoon.
Always in beautiful condition
Greens were running at pretty good speed and condition of overall course and facility is fantastic. Very courteous staff everywhere even though it was a Hot deal.
We tend to book through Golf Now and found that some courses around Ottawa Valley do not treat GN customers with the same level of service as those paying full price. In fact, we experienced poor treatment.
The Marshes
Took advantage of a Customer Appreciation deal. Golf, cart and lunch for $54 + tax. Almost no-one out, had the place to myself. Conditions were good and the layout is challenging. Good deal all around.
Poor course management
The Marshes is a very challenging course and is picturesque. Some holes almost go overboard with split fairways and hazards that make the course less enjoyable for average golfers. We golfed in a foursome and were overtaken by 3 sets of 2 golfers and 3 singles. We were well within the recommended playing time as posted along the course, but with that number of singles and doubles pushing from behind it really took away from our enjoyment of the round. We felt this was very poor course time management and a distraction. They were also watering many holes on timers and this held us up on 3 holes and we skipped one entirely. This in a day when they were calling for rain all afternoon and evening (which it did). Overall these two issues led us to rate our overall experience as less than great...
Treat to Play
Course was in excellent shape. Staff was courteous and helpful. Second hole is a monster perhaps too long for the average golfer to dream of paring. Would like to see yardages at tee boxes along with hole layouts to determine which way some holes turn. More yardage markers in fairways would be very helpful, not everyone owns a golf GPS. Overall a real treat but a challenge to play.
Great course with a one key shortfall
I have played this course twice and both times was blown away by the condition of the course and the courtesy of the staff. The first time we played the course there were GPS units built-in to the carts. This time they had been removed. This would be fine but the holes don't have individual overhead pictures of the hole layout at the tees. The score card doesn't have an aerial view of the course layout either. This leads to some guessing about distances to hazards and what might be beyond the dog legs. Lucky I had my iPhone with a GPS app but my playing partners didn't have their own.
