River Bend Resort & Country Club

About
Set along the Rio Grande River, this is a scenic course with spectacular views. The front nine was built in 1987, and the back nine followed in 1992. The highlight of the course is what is perhaps the longest water hazard in Texas, the Rio Grande River, which flows along holes 5 through 13 on the left side of the fairway.
Narrow fairways and grass bunkers make the course tough, especially when the wind is howling, as it is tough to hit the small, firm greens. Water is everywhere. No. 14 is the only hole without water. The par 3 17th hole, with its island greens, headlines a series of demanding par 3 holes. The last hole plays 434 yards into the wind and has out-of-bounds on either side of the fairway.
Getting there : From Harlingen take Hwy. 77 south. When you come to Hwy. 802 turn right, then continue until you reach Hwy 281. Turn right again and drive approximately 2.5 miles to the course

Good price for the course good pace and staff friendly
After the flood
2 holes were shortened. Would have been nice to know that a head of time.
4 Holes Flooded
4 holes were flooded from the Rio Grand river coming out of its banks but the staff had moves tees and changes the par of those holes. Definitely challenging but interesting to see water actually flowing. I'm sure in a few days it will be all back to normal.
Enjoyed course
Played course many times. Pace of play very slow. Series of groups of 4 seniors played very slowly. Happens on occasion. I get great deals from time to time using golf pass. Will continue to play course at least monthly. Wish they would irrigate fairways a little better. Often not much grass to hit shots from in the fairways.
Course design is fun.
Course is dry to drought conditions, greens are in good condition. Some tee box are so dry it was hard to get a tee in the ground. One par 5 had been reduced to par 3. I was told by a local it had been that way for a year. Not sure why. Tee boxes were in good shape and the par 5 would have been wildly challenging!
Find somewhere else to play
My wife & I scheduled a tee time, 18 holes for me, 9 holes for my wife. (She goes shopping while I play the back) We caught up to a group of 6 men. They would not let us play through & when I told the Marshall about it, he told me that they were regulars who played for big $ and that only 5 were actually playing, the other 2 men went along to prevent cheating.
If you want your own course, join a private club. Part of being a decent course is to practice golf etiquette. If your looking for a place to golf near Brownsville, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
Disappointed
Fairways were not in good shape and the greens were hit and miss. With all the rain we've had expected the course to be greener and in better shape!
Disappointed
Wasn't as good a shape as I thought it would be, especially with all the rain this year. Ninth hole has been under repair for years and still shortened to a short par 3. Seventeen pond was being dredged for golf balls and 2 ATV 's were in between the tee and green causing a distraction to try and hit this small island green, could do it early morning or late afternoon or on a less busy day as the course was packed.
Golf Friendly
Really enjoyed the course great value carts have USB coolers ball a club washers .
