Excellent Course
Tee Time was noon for afternoon rate. Able to tee off a little early as there was not much activity at the course on a beautiful September Saturday. Course played excellent, greens were true, probably a 7-9 on the meter. Round took approx. 3.5 hours (we caught the threesome ahead of us on 17).
Course is well worth the rate.
excellent outing
Great course great people and a well maintained facility.
Probably the best overall public course in Suffolk
Course length is good but blue/black tees will be quite a challenge. Overall best fairways in area and greens are well maintained. Both narrow and wide fairways on course. Deep greens. Only issue is that the yardage markers are absent, broken or worn down and must rely on experience or a GPS device. PGA professional very personable.
Worth the Ride
I live in Va Beach, and this course is about a 40 minute drive. It was well worth it. It was hard to believe how open the course was on a Sunday afternoon. The greens were in super shape. I tended to read too much break in a lot of my putts, but once I had them figured out, I started making more putts. The fairways gave good lies in almost every instance. I tend to play "winter rules" at most courses, almost out of habit, but here it wasn't necessary. My brother was in the bunker that is in the front left of 17 and it just looked like red clay - no sand at all. Maybe it was being re-done.
Nice golf couse
Enjoyed course. Play time was extremely long because of High School Competition. When booking a tee time the desk person should inform caller if a outing is taking place.
not bad
the course is challenging and fair. Strong par 3's. conditions were ok. The price was right so I played otherwise I am not so sure.
You will be surprised
Just book your tee time and play! You will not be disappointed. I have to travel to Suffolk once a week and I generally play the Suffolk course(a hidden gem) but last year, they completely stripped their greens and replanted with the latest and greatest; it may be the latest, but as of now the greatest has not arrived. Hopefully, they will come around; it has only been a year. However, Nansemond fills in nicely! I really like this course! A little more expensive than Suffolk but still worth the cost.
a pleasurable experience
I have played this course numerous times and have always found it in excellent condition. It is a fun course to play and have enjoyed each and every round.
The river doesn't come in play as much as you might expect.
The river is supposed to be in play on 14 holes. Don't let this scare you. On several holes, it parallels the course, but, far from your flight path. Minimal rough, and tight fairways. We played a day after 3" rain, but, course drained so well we could ride anywhere. Only problem were several traps turned into lakes, actually lost a ball in a deep , murky, trap! The 17th hole is a nice par hole, with a true island green.. Very pretty hole. I would like to play again, under drier conditions.
The course has great greens
The greens are the only thing that makes this course worthwhile. They were large, mowed low, undulating, hard to read and harder to putt. What a challenge but they were awesome. The rest of the course was barely average. Burned out rough, tight fairways with little grass,, rough high and unkept.
Nice, fun and challenging course, staff...not so much
I have played this course several times in tournaments and just for fun. The pro/owner a detriment to this fine course, and his staff follows his lead unfortunately. When we approached the counter to check in for our tee time he didn't say hello, or even acknowledge us insignificant patrons, so we told him we made a tee time through golf.now. His first words were "That was a mistake", so i asked what he meant and he said that the price was wrong ($20 each) but they would eat the difference. I said yeah you willbecasue you pretty much have to right? And proceeded to tell him we jumped all over it, $20 is a good price, even if it is Sunday evening and that the course looked crowded so he should be glad of the $20 deal. To that, he grumbled something and took our $20 and said we could go, that's it lol...Not a friendly fella that one.
On to the course...The good: Nice, and challenging as well. Fun and in good shape. Driving, practice and chipping range are top notch, as well as the putting green. The bad: Greens didn't match putting green at all. Mowers, people watering the greens, and general people just riding around on carts that work there won't get out of your way and even walk right up on you while you are putting/addressing a shot/swinging. Stupid ridiculous, made me want to throw my club at them about 4-5 times.
I recommend playing the course, but don't expect good, or even fair treatment as a customer because the pro and the staff think they are better than you. My rating of 4 stars is only because it is a fun course with good views, and won't break the banks doors down and take all the money at gun point.
Course has a great lay-out
This 18-hole course sets up well for all players. Be aware the yardage markers are few and far between. The fairway stakes are all at different yardages from one hole to the next, and should not be used for yardage! There are many blind tee shots, turns, and undulations that you need course knowledge to play your best. There are no pictures or plan views of each hole to aide you. Greens were in wonderful condition. The scenery along the wetlands and river is absolutely gorgeous. A couple of the bunkers needed more sand but most were well cared for. Don't ask how I know! Overall it is a great course and is priced fairly reasonable for what you get.
beautiful scenery
the course was in really good shape.what a value right here in my own back yard of SUFFOLK.
Plays long
Challenging track. Greens were kind of slow because they had not been rolled. Fairways and bunkers in need of work. I believe the condition of the course has been affected by several days of rain.
Tuesday at Nansemond River
Course was in great shape as usual, greens were rolled and putting was the line you picked, fairways were in good shape. Course has an excellent practice area and the course personnel are very friendly
Scott Samson
I have played this course about 10 times in the last 6 years. Every time I play it I wish I would have played it sooner. It is a very scenic course being on the Nansmond river and marsh. The course is well taken care of and the greens were in great condition. The practice range was good, along with the putting area. Bring some bug spray in the summer, but they are not as bad as some courses that I have been too. I am planning another drive out that way soon to play again. I love the courses ease of play but yet the difficulty of the course is nice. I want a challenging course, that doesn't make it to easy to make par. Overall an outstanding place to play.
Great golf course!
Beautiful scenery and great golf. I have a outstanding golf day. This course has a island green. You will not be disappointed.
A challenge for any level
Nansemond River is a challenging, but very fair test. The course plays along the river and marsh with beautiful views and very few homes. It is seldome overcrowderd and very reasonably priced. We play a lot of golf in this area and Nansemend is one of our favorites.
Great Layout
The layout of this course is amazing and it is very challenging as well. The only knock is that the sand traps where small lakes. It hasn't rained in awhile so they must of been having some issues. Other than that it was an awesome time on an awesome golf course.
Greens are great
Scenery and course condition is very good
We played after two days of rain and the fairways and greens were still in great condition not much water very satisfied
