Tucked away in the corner of a recent housing development 20 minutes from Charlottesville, Old Trail GC maintains fantastic conditions on a good course with great amenities.

This was my first time back to Old Trail in about six years as I had moved away from the area. I was pleasantly surprised by the playing conditions here, they are truly superb. Despite the hot summer the fairway grass is remarkably lush and smooth with only a hint of browning in a few spots and the Bermuda grass is a tad longer and thicker than most courses, making the ball sit up nicely. The rough and tee boxes are also in great shape and all bunkers have groomed native dirt that is easy and satisfying to hit out of. The greens roll fast and smooth with few ball marks or any signs of stress.

The layout of the course left me wanting just a bit more, especially around the greens but most golfers will have no complaints. It appears the designers wanted to make the course accommodating to golfers of all skill levels, and to that extent the forward tees have few forced carries, the bunkers are fairly shallow, and the fairways are wide and open on the entire front nine and the finishing stretch as well. You can still find trouble off the tee but you won’t go through more than a sleeve of balls unless you’re particularly wild off the tee. The greens have little undulation or tiering and there’s even less break in the putts than it looks when you line up behind them. Also note: the 18th is a par 4/5 that requires no more than a long iron off the tee leaving you about 200 yards in with a steep slope between you and the green. Some might like the uniqueness of it, others might not.

If the layout of the course doesn't wow you, the views of the Blue Ridge mountains likely will; the vistas are great on many of the holes.

The staff is very friendly and the pace of play was great when I played mid afternoon on a weekday. The off-course amenities are top-notch, with a nice driving range, practice facilities, restaurant, and even an NBC Golf Academy with Kandi Comer Golf instruction.

Prices can be a little steep for some but they have reasonable walking rates and the course is walker-friendly. In all I would definitely recommend Old Trail if you live in the area or are visiting. It’s not quite as nice as nearby Birdwood but it’s cheaper and not as crowded.

I had never heard of this course, so I wasn't overly excited about playing it. Man, was I wrong. The layout was really good, and the conditions were top notch. The fairways were somehow cut short but spongy in a way that made the ball always seem like it was sitting up on a tee. To top it off, the restaurant food was phenomenal.

To earn five stars, the course would need just slight design changes. The greens could use more slope to increase their difficulty, and the bunkers could be more assertive. There were a couple of times where they installed bunkers almost like the church pews at Oakmont, which I really liked the idea of. But they were small with no depth or lips, so they instead looked like afterthoughts.

Still, these are very minor complaints. I would happily come back here and would encourage people to make the drive from up to an hour away to do the same.

Old Trail is a phenomenal golf course. The course is always in great shape and it's tough to find another course with better course conditions.

The layout is fantastic too. A great mix of challenging holes and easier holes. Lots of variety. If you're playing well you can post a really good score. If you're not playing well, you could have a tough day.

If I lived in the area, I would strongly consider joining this course. I think it's that good!

Great course at fair price with outstanding views of the Blue Ridge mountains. Bentgrass greens were excellent and Zoysia fairways made every lie perfect. Holes were an interesting mix--not too hard and not too easy. A herd of alpacas on one farm beside the fairway.

Staff was very friendly, especially the LPGA Pro from Peru. Clubhouse was like an old barn and food was good--especially the french fries.

I look forward to playing there again.

I enjoyed Old Trail. It's got an interesting mix of holes. Conditioning was good throughout. The greens were in fine shape. Paid $65 for a weekend morning time with cart. Not too bad. I would go back and would recommend though I guess I slightly prefer Birdwood nearby for about the same $'s.

I usually worry that I'm gonna end up spending a lot of time looking for my ball on courses that I'm not familiar with. Had no problems on this course. Enjoyed that a lot.

Played there for the first time 2 weeks ago. Place is a hidden gem. Coming from Richmond its a bit of a hike (90 minutes) but well worth it. Course is reasonably challenging (we played it from the tips without too much trouble). Hole 2 is a beast - 240 yard par 3 - but the rest of the course was very playable, open, and very fair. If the wind is blowing, I imagine it can play sneaky long.

The course is right in the middle of the valley - with mountain gazing all around. Great choice this time of year with the foliage. Greens were pretty large, and some had some serious undulation. Stop at Blue Mountain Brewery (off route 151) for a victory beer afterwards (about 8 minutes away) I highly recommend.
