Amazing greens and layout.
Conditions were amazing for prime seaso let alone November.
Must Play
Course was in excellent shape. If you are in the area, Williamsburg National is a place to need to play. They have 2 courses, Jamestown and Yorktown. You won’t be disappointed.
Not a bad course
The course was in good shape. Challenging fairways to hit for the most part. Greens were inconsistent and slow but overall a great day on the course.
Great parkland layout
Played several courses in the area, during a 10 day stay. The two courses here were on the top of my list to repeat in the future. Picking the right set of tees is essential to scoring well here. Played both the tips one day and from the whites another, when paired with another twosome. The tips will challenge your driver, and you will need it a lot. The fairways are fairly wide, but not excessively. Marginal tee shots will get you in the rough but a missed tee ball usually results in a lost ball. The hole layouts were interesting and varied. There were many memorable holes. The par threes are a good challenge form the tips, and good yardages for high handicaps, from the forward tees. I hit a variety of shots and clubs on the holes, so it never gets mundane. The Bermuda rough can hide the balls, in places where it is a little thicker, so keep your eye on where it lands! But it is not so deep that you cannot recover, with a well struck shot. The greens were very smooth and consistent from green to green. Only a couple had minor bad spots, but the pin positions easily avoided them. . You need to think your way around this course to score well. A little pricer than some other courses in the area, but not excessively, and what I would consider reasonable, for the caliber of the course.
Great Golf
It was a great day for golf. The course was in great condition. Greens were in great condition. They were free from any ball marks and this was the middle of the day. Course employees were extremely helpful. Only thing missing was a beverage cart, but we made do with the coolers on thee course.
On and off the course club is great
Being 13!and having a 9.3 handicap from the white or blues I am all about great greens and conditions. I have played at national all of my life and have continued to enjoy the course and all of its staff. Playing as frequently as I do I have gotten close with all staff they are all friendly and nice to all. The food is great and when done with a round it is always nice to be waited on by great staff and great food cooked by their outstanding chefs. A few years ago the course went a little south. But in the past couple of years Jay Long the superintendent has done a great job and his excellent maintenance crew is outstanding. Chris Hartig owns the company who manages national he is a great guy. Chris hired JR Powell as the GM. JR has hired outstanding staff. Chris Dillow who is the clubs head golf pro has done so much to bring back the club and get more golf out on the course. He has organized programs for members and always walks around with a smile. National is definitely a place be a member or play. The club has great members and normally play as a group on the weekends and if you like to bet play with that group. They are always welcome to new people joining. The rye grass on the Yorktown is great. With it all green it is beautiful. The greens aren’t as good on Yorktown as they are on the Jamestown but they still roll smooth. Jamestown has made a comeback and now is in its prime just like the club. Now is a great time to join, play, or eat.
Beautiful course
Great layout and wonderful conditions. Pro shop staff was extremely nice and informative. Will play again. Loved it.
A very, VERY nice course…BUT
If it weren’t for the greens, this course would be a 4+ star facility. There is not lot of water to contend with, but what there is, is well applied. The fairways are in good shape, and the Tee boxes for the most part are fine. The is a plethora of traps/bunkers – and they’re well positioned as far as my game is concerned. The greens are very bad, but they are working on getting them back in shape.
Five star, but not yet
The problems of this course are well documented. I played the Yorktown course today and I have to say, I was very impressed! Yes, the greens, many of them, are abysmal. But....the layout is fantastic, the scenery beautiful, the staff was nice (except for maybe the bartender......not friendly and seemed to resent being busy, although she wasn't).
If you are visiting the area on vacation, don't play here until October or so (although the Jamestown course is opening on 9/7/17)..... there are simply too many great courses in the area, no need to play on lousy greens). But.....if you can handle the greens for a few months.....I played on a Saturday in just over three hours and very much enjoyed myself....
Golf course conditions
The course is beautifully laid out. however the greens
are terrible. Many were bare earth or with very little grass on them'
The fairways are generous and well bunkered. Since it was the first time playing this course, at this time and or until the entire course conditions improve dramatically I will not play it again.
Greens are horrible
Greens are undergoing rehab. Not sure if it was the product they were using to treat or the local water but all of the greens under repair smelled awful. Like don't-breathe-through-your-nose awful. Several irrigation issues on fairways causing saturation. Many of the greens on Yorktown are less than 50% grass. Be wary of missing sprinkler valve access covers around the greens. I nearly fell in one. No practice pitching/putting facilities.
Great layout
My wife and I played this course on vacation, knowing something of the history surrounding the change in ownership and efforts to revitalize the course. We were very pleasantly surprised. The area has been suffering from a severe drought and the effects were obvious, but the course was greener than we expected. The greens showed some damage due to weed control efforts, but this was openly addressed on info cards attached to all of the carts, and where the greens were undamaged they putted beautifully. The layout was well thought-out with interesting bunkering. The staff was extremely friendly and the grille room was a great place to eat after the round. I only wish that the Jamestown course had been open too!
needs work
The greens were in terrible shape and the fairways not so good either. Tee boxes were fine. Course has a lot of potential. They need to shut the Yorktown course down and give it a lot of love. Was told they redid the course and just reopened it and are doing the Jamestown course now. If they do the same job to Jamestown as they did to Yorktown I wouldn't play there anymore.
Thank you for your review and comments. New ownership and management are in the process of re-establishing the Yorktown Course greens from years of neglect. While we were able to provide a good putting surface for late spring and early summer we also knew the greens were still not fully healed and susceptible to turf loss during the hotter summer months. Summer heat combined with aggressive treatments to fight weed control that had not been done in years has exposed weaker areas of the greens. This was expected and part of the process for re-establishing long term health and consistent putting surfaces. We have recently addressed with advanced aerfication and re-seeding of these areas. We expect them to fully recover by early fall. In the meantime we apologize for the inconvenience.
Also the Jamestown course greens are growing in nicely and we expect that course to re-open in good condition late August or early September.
Nice course
Played round with two sons while vacationing in the area. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Course was in great shape. Would play here again if we return to the area.
Beautiful Course
We played early in the morning on Fathers Day. The course conditions were excellent and the greens were in really good shape. It is a nicely laid out course.
Niceguyeddy thank you first for coming out to play Williamsburg National and second for taking the time to write a review. A very good assessment of where we are. New ownership and management has been at the property for about 10 months. We have made a lot of progress but still some ways to go. The Jamestown course will open September 7th with new champion Bermuda greens and the Yorktown course is now in the process of being aerified and reseeded. We expect the thin and bare areas of the Yorktown greens to be healed by late September. This is the first negative comment we have received in regards to service we have a great team and we will address this right away. We hope to see you at Williamsburg National again soon and thank you again for your review.
