Spring Creek Golf Club
About
Spring Creek Golf Club, which is just outside of colonial Charlottesville, tumbles across the wooded hills that sit beneath the mountains of central Virginia. The scenic course winds through mature trees and it is also accented with rock walls and bridges. The layout will test your accuracy with its narrow fairways, water hazards, and strategically placed sand traps but it is still playable enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels, and there is plenty of scenic respite as well to make the round well worth the reasonable green fees. The golf course is relatively young but it has quickly garnered a strong following. When it opened in 2007 it was named the "Best New Affordable Course" by Golf Digest, and since then the accolades have kept coming, including being ranked as one of the top 100 public golf courses in the country.

the par-3 8th is the easiest par-3 on the course. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 08/05/2018

The par-4 10th is an iconic dogleg right and usually has an insanely tough pin location. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 08/05/2018

The par-3 13th is one of the tougher short holes on the course and one of my favorites. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 08/05/2018

I'm a sucker for split fairways, like this one on the par-4 14th. The 16th and 18th also have rough running through the middle. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 08/05/2018

When You're Off, It's Still On
The goal of any golf course is to maximize your enjoyment despite the fact that a) your swing can't find the fairways with the Hubble Space Telescope and b) you have decided that the best way to grip the club is to replicate crocodile jaws at full throttle.
Spring Creek delivered. In spades.
Despite a less than stellar outing and less than ideal weather (cart path only) this course was an absolute pleasure. From the opening dog-leg par 4 to the beautiful par 4 18th there were times when one just stood back and admired the beauty of the design. Multiple sets of tees allowed for all handicap levels to enjoy the round, and native grasses and dense vegetation acted as forced carries for the better players. As for the greens, fast but true.
So, it's almost golfing nirvana, save for the fact that these native (high!) grasses find their way near the greens on several holes. An approach just off the green will find them (trust me), and they seem a bit penal in nature and rather unnecessary.
This course may go private in the near future, so don't delay. Enjoy it with both old friends and new (Hi Mike!) - you will not regret it.
Amazing Conditions
The reviews were too good to pass up so I had to see for myself, and wow, this course is spectacular! Some of the most pristine conditions I've seen for a public course around the DMV and the rate to play here is quite reasonable that'd I'd play here soon before the secret gets out and the prices go thru the roof. The bunkering was huge and sprinkled everywhere throughout the course, but as long as you were playing the proper tees the bunkers for the most part don't come in to play. Greens were massive, extreme undulations, and ran true and fast and made for some tricky putts during the whole round. The driving areas can be tight on some holes so make sure your driver is on that day as you may be losing a few balls during the round.
I can't say enough good things about this course and would make the 2.5 hour drive again in a heartbeat to play this course again.
Must Play Course
This course is about 2 hours from my home yet I still venture to Gordonsville 3-4 times a year to play here. Course is usually in great shape; greens were a little slower on my November trip than they normally are. I can't wait till spring and my next trip to Spring Creek!
One of the best courses you can play
Spring Creek is a magnificent, excellently-maintained golf course cut from a forest about 20 miles east of Charlottesville, VA. I haven't played here in several years, since I no longer live in Virginia, but it was wonderful to go back to beautiful environment this course offers. The conditions have always been outstanding at Spring Creek. I have played many courses in Virginia, and Spring Creek may very well be the best-maintained layout I have ever played on. If you want to play on a tour-level course for less than $100, this is someplace you should visit.
Each hole is an environment unto itself. The main hazards are gigantic popcorn-shaped bunkers in the landing areas and surrounding the greens. However, if you aren't careful, you may also end up amongst the towering hardwood trees or the tall native grasses. The course is designed so that hazards are easily seen. The bunkers serve to frame the course and give you a visual picture of the shot required. Target golf is the name of the game here. Most of the holes favor a high, soft-landing ball flight to hit the greens. The greens themselves are quick with multiple tiers and swales.
As I always have, I recommend Spring Creek to everyone willing to take on its challenge!
A must play
By far, the best course in central virginia. Worth every second of the 45 minute trip from Richmond. Course is absolutely beautiful and in perfect condition every time we play.
WOWEE WOW WOW
So this is an amazing course. Top 3 in the state of Virginia IMHO.
The layout is very challenging, the decisions appear to be straightforward but that is just not the case. This course is a cross between Augusta and Royal New Kent here in Virginia. You have to play Royal New Kent to believe it....
Spring Creek will punish you for being naive IMO. Commanding iron control around the greens is a must, as well as straight drives from the tee.
The only water on the course is at the beautiful 18th, which caps a great round on a fantastic course. Truly a remarkable gem in every way...
Cheers,
Rob
Best course
Truly great course, accessible to every golfer. 5 sets of tees. Great risk/ reward options. Important to play from appropriate tees & be able to elevate ball over hazards. Not a "bump and run " course. Staff very accommodating. Great new clubhouse & pro shop. Very easy access from I-64.
Nicest course I've ever playrd
I play a lot of different courses in a lot of different places when I travel. This course is the nicest track I have ever played. From tee to green, everything about this place screams PGA possibility.
Immaculate!!
Absolutely beautiful golf course. Challenging, scenic and in great condition. A must play for anyone.
My Favorite
Difficult but always in top condition. The staff is always polite. I can't wait to enjoy a drink on the patio of their new clubhouse which over looks 18. Lots of great holes and cool tee shots. My favorite Virginia golf course above Kingsmill River course.
Great course, challenging layout
I really enjoy playing this course. Challenging layout with different tees for different skill level so can be enjoyed by any type golfer. I used to be able to go out and not see another group the whole round but starting to get more play. All around conditions are excellent but the greens are full of unfixed ball marks. Greens are still quick and in good shape but you could fix your ball mark and 10 others on every hole. Best value in central Va area.
Possibly the nicest course I have ever played in 50 years
Either this or Blackwolf Run is the best course I have ever played. Immaculate grooming, manicured fairways and penal rough. Spring Creek is now private on weekends, but, semi- private through the week. Play it if you get the chance. Course is protective of the 1:50 Hot Deal tee time. In case a member shows up, they don't want the Hot Deal people holding them back. This is not a criticism, just a point of information. A few par 3 tee boxes were chewed up, but, this is to be expected. This is a real GEM.
State Open conditions.
Our foursome has played Spring Creek often. But-we knew that the Virginia State Open was held at Spring Creek two days before we were to play. We wanted to get a taste of what that must have been like. And we got it. Conditions were excellent. Rough was brutal. Pin placements were extreme. Great round for us masochists.
Another satisfied customer
Not a lot to add to the other glowing reviews. If you have a chance definitely put this course on your to-play list. Pristine conditions (although I think we found one small patch of clover In the rough on 17--sarcasm). Tee boxes, fairways and greens are all you could ask for. New clubhouse is going to be amazing and will offer a great view of play on 18. Traps were a little rough as they were adding sand for the state tourn. and not quite ready yet. Will absolutely be back.
Terrific track
Spring Creek is as good as it gets for the money. Challenging layout, about 20 minutes east from Charlottesville. Big bent grass greens, with a good bit of elevation changes and hole layouts. Highly reccommend.
Always a pleasure
This course continues to be the best I have ever played. The conditions were excellent. Tough but also fair. In my opinion the best public course in VA.
Best golf course to public
Even though open to public only weekdays, best golf course for non-membership holders can play in Richmond.
Spring Creek Spectacular
Absolutely Beautiful and the course is maintained to incredible standards. Challenging, gives you a feeling of playing in a major championship.
Half round before thunderstorm
The course is amazing. Staffs are very friendly. The marshal kindly warned me before the heavy storm comes. Even if I played 10 holes, the kindly refunded me half of paid price. The course is well maintained, but sometimes the rough are too thick to search the ball - it might lead slow play. Only my regret is I cannot finish the round. If i revisit the area, this course is must-play course. Trust me.
Get ready.
The course was in preparation for hosting the Virginia State Amateur tournament and the conditions were tough. Keep the ball in play and play it from the correct tees to get the best experience. Bring a camera and an extra sleeve of balls!
