Great mountain layout

Great mountain layout Near Harrisonburg. Beautiful course, some great mountain vistas. Greens, collar, tee boxes could really use some work. Can only imagine this course in peak condition, some really challenging holes. Well worth the $35 rate from Golf Now. Some very interesting rock/stone designs and hazards.

Awesome hidden gem

After a senic approach we entered the Packsaddle course complete with charming bronze statuary and
a bubbling waterfall. We entered the upscale clubhouse and were greeted by knowledgeable and friendly
staff. We played the challenging mountain course which was in good condition considering the recent
drought. Many of the holes offer interest and challenges. The views from the back nine are stunning!
The quiet electric carts allow for many wildlife sightings. Lunch and beers at the 19th were great and
completed our pleasant golf outing.

Needs Help

First, the staff where extremely pleasant and helpful. This course layout is a true test of golf, its tight, hilly, and wayward shots are quite often punished. I like the layout. Unfortunately, over the last years the condition of the course continues to degrade. The tee boxes were crab grass, in many cases with only one tee marker. The greens had many dead areas, where the pins were positioned, on good grass, the greens were extremely slow. Bunkers had minimal sand and, in some cases, just weeds. Many had been raked. The fringes of the greens varied from nice grass to weeds. The fairways were OK, the rough a little high but mowed. The clubhouse was nice as always. A great layout, with great views, but given the condition of the last couple years, that was my last round there. The owners need to either invest the money necessary to bring the course back to a reasonable condition, or just close it.

Such potential! Not realized

I live near Packsaddle and have played it many times. The setting and layout have so much promise! But maintenance and upkeep have suffered, so play is way down, so upkeep is down, and so it spirals. The greens had large areas where the grass has died, probably due to lack of water this summer. Tees were poorly kept. Had the course almost to myself. Deer are plentiful and the view from the mountaintop is incredible. Some holes require long uphill drives and these are so tough. Several hard part 3s. So sad to see such a good layout in this condition.

Has potential

Has potential to be a top notch course. The tee boxes and greens are in rough shape. The place really needs some tender loving care and upgrades. But had discounted rates at the time and as usual, had a great time just playing golf with friends.

Rain Check?

Played six holes before the rain started to pour! Got back to the clubhouse the young guy there was more concerned about getting us on our way so he could leave. He wasn’t concerned about whether we were satisfied customers. He didn’t give a rain check a thought. No worries! It’ll be my last trip to Packsaddle. Doubt I’ll book with GolfNow anymore either since this is how they operate.

I'm sorry that your visit was far from the experience it should have been. That is certainly not the kind of things I like to hear, and not how any customer should be treated. Please reach out to me at packsaddleinfo@gmail.com

Nice Surprise

Have not played this course for two years because the conditions were so bad. Went back in August and can say the course has changed dramatically. The bunkers were the only thing needing attention. The maintenance staff is doing a great job.

Built as a hi end course

Built years ago as a hi end course but because of the layout it isn’t much fun. It is one of those courses that you play once and then you find other places to play. The course is not in good shape. Very impressive driving up to it but I can’t imagine going back. I’m a 10 handicap and lost most of my good golf balls.

Tough course when wet

This is a tough course especially with wet conditions. It’s fairly long for women players, but a pretty fair test for most men. It’s hilly, so many holes have added length trying to get uphill. Fairways and greens were in pretty good condition considering they had received over 6”of rain in two days.A very fair price for seniors on Tuesdays. Staff was EXTREMELY friendly.

unprofessional and in need of routine maintenance

refused to pay for a scarred custom golf club after hitting a large rock in a bunker. It looked like to grass hadn't been mowed in weeks. Very unprofessional manager Mr. Powell was rude, unprofessional and combative

In need of Course Maintenance and a Professional Staff

My husband and I and another couple played this golf course in May 2018. My husband was playing out of a bunker and struck a very large rock and scarred his custom golf club. When we approached Mr. Brad Powell about the issue he was rude, argumentative and very combative. I posted about the incident b4 we left the golf course.
Mr. Powell pleased with us to take it down and in return if we would send him a bill for replacing the club he would pay it. We sent him the invoice and After several months of leaving messages never heard a word from him. When we finally got him on the phone he changed his tune and said he could only send us passes. Well of course we've never seen them either. I haven't mentioned the course was in terrible shape - long grass everywhere and no sign of routine maintenance.
If you are planning on playing golf in this area stay way from this golf course. It's a shame bc it could be beautiful if ran by professionals with integrity and professionalism

Stay away is my advice

Conditions Keeping This From Being A Great Course

If you’re looking for a secluded golf course, it doesn’t get much more remote than Packsaddle Ridge GC. It’s a 10-minute drive from the nearest town out in the middle of nowhere alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The isolated location is perhaps to the course’s detriment as it doesn’t appear to be getting enough business to keep it in really nice condition. I don’t like to start reviews with the negatives but the poor conditions are the first thing you notice. The rough looks like your lawn would if you neglected it for two weeks in the middle of June; thick and tall. The fairway grass is also taller than you’d like and quite clumpy. The greens are ok though many have burnt out areas that get in the way of putting. The bunkers aren’t raked and the tee boxes aren’t well looked after. It’s pretty obvious that the maintenance staffing is at the bare minimum. It’s really a shame because this is otherwise a pretty nice course.

The layout is more diverse than any other in the area, mostly because of the extreme elevation changes throughout the course. How extreme? From the 8th tee to the 14th tee, there’s a nearly uninterrupted climb of 410 feet! You lose half that elevation in the next three holes as the course winds its way back down towards the clubhouse. I walk this course and it’s by far the most challenging to do so. They caution you to such an extent venturing out on foot that they circle the phone number for the clubhouse on the free yardage book they give you at the beginning of your round in case you change your mind.

Besides the dramatic elevation changes, this course features plenty of water hazards and bunkers as well as some long forced carries from the back tees. The greens don’t have a ton of undulation but many are heavily sloped. Speaking of slope, the slope rating on this course seems a bit low at 131 from the blues, this is a tough course! Bring plenty of balls with you as well, you’ll lose more than a few.

The staff is pretty friendly (what little there is) and being so far from anywhere even on a beautiful Saturday afternoon the course was only partially fully with great pace of play.

If you are up for a challenge and don’t mind the shabby conditions, this is a good course to try out. Hopefully its best days are ahead of it.

This course has potential

This course has the potential to be spectacular. The layout is challenging. Tight fairways and tough greens. Course shape was average. The views and elevation changes are spectacular. The bronze statues, tee monuments, stone bridges and covered bridge are the kinds of features you would find at a high end course. The initial construction cost of this course had to be huge. The pro shop had no stock so if you want a logo shirt, especially in ladies, you can forget it. If the course was in better shape this would be a top notch course.

Tough course, great shape

I play Packsaddle once or twice a year when I'm visiting family. It's a challenging course, tight in most places, no flat greens. A good score there is a great round.

Course condition this year was as good as I've seen it. Tee boxes were fine, they aren't bent grass. Greens were excellent, maybe a touch slow. The fairways were in good condition with just a little clover (and that's a nit). The only minor issue was one or two of the bunkers were a little thin on sand.

I played on a Monday, 18 before lunch, there were a couple twosomes on the course, 5 cars in the parking lot. A hidden gem I guess. A great place to play, a test of golf, with some awesome views of the valley

So-So

My first time to the Harrisonburg area. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE BAG DROP as it is quite the hike up from the parking lot to the clubhouse. Course was built by a family construction business and it shows. If they'd spent as much time, effort and money on the course conditions as they did and the spectacular accoutrements (stone bridges and staircases, sculptures, covered bridge, etc.) it could be a spectacular course. Condtions, especially the tees, are average muny condition at best. The greens are fair. Kudos to the staff attendant who tells you that the greens are fast putting down-valley and EXTREMELY slow putting up towards the mountain.

Packsaddle is a beautiful golf course with great views. Every year when I come to VA it is a must play! Yes it is a mountain course so if you have to walk up a hill it happens I don't know what to tell you!!!!
