If you’re looking for a secluded golf course, it doesn’t get much more remote than Packsaddle Ridge GC. It’s a 10-minute drive from the nearest town out in the middle of nowhere alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The isolated location is perhaps to the course’s detriment as it doesn’t appear to be getting enough business to keep it in really nice condition. I don’t like to start reviews with the negatives but the poor conditions are the first thing you notice. The rough looks like your lawn would if you neglected it for two weeks in the middle of June; thick and tall. The fairway grass is also taller than you’d like and quite clumpy. The greens are ok though many have burnt out areas that get in the way of putting. The bunkers aren’t raked and the tee boxes aren’t well looked after. It’s pretty obvious that the maintenance staffing is at the bare minimum. It’s really a shame because this is otherwise a pretty nice course.

The layout is more diverse than any other in the area, mostly because of the extreme elevation changes throughout the course. How extreme? From the 8th tee to the 14th tee, there’s a nearly uninterrupted climb of 410 feet! You lose half that elevation in the next three holes as the course winds its way back down towards the clubhouse. I walk this course and it’s by far the most challenging to do so. They caution you to such an extent venturing out on foot that they circle the phone number for the clubhouse on the free yardage book they give you at the beginning of your round in case you change your mind.

Besides the dramatic elevation changes, this course features plenty of water hazards and bunkers as well as some long forced carries from the back tees. The greens don’t have a ton of undulation but many are heavily sloped. Speaking of slope, the slope rating on this course seems a bit low at 131 from the blues, this is a tough course! Bring plenty of balls with you as well, you’ll lose more than a few.

The staff is pretty friendly (what little there is) and being so far from anywhere even on a beautiful Saturday afternoon the course was only partially fully with great pace of play.

If you are up for a challenge and don’t mind the shabby conditions, this is a good course to try out. Hopefully its best days are ahead of it.

This course has the potential to be spectacular. The layout is challenging. Tight fairways and tough greens. Course shape was average. The views and elevation changes are spectacular. The bronze statues, tee monuments, stone bridges and covered bridge are the kinds of features you would find at a high end course. The initial construction cost of this course had to be huge. The pro shop had no stock so if you want a logo shirt, especially in ladies, you can forget it. If the course was in better shape this would be a top notch course.

I play Packsaddle once or twice a year when I'm visiting family. It's a challenging course, tight in most places, no flat greens. A good score there is a great round.

Course condition this year was as good as I've seen it. Tee boxes were fine, they aren't bent grass. Greens were excellent, maybe a touch slow. The fairways were in good condition with just a little clover (and that's a nit). The only minor issue was one or two of the bunkers were a little thin on sand.

I played on a Monday, 18 before lunch, there were a couple twosomes on the course, 5 cars in the parking lot. A hidden gem I guess. A great place to play, a test of golf, with some awesome views of the valley

My first time to the Harrisonburg area. MAKE SURE YOU USE THE BAG DROP as it is quite the hike up from the parking lot to the clubhouse. Course was built by a family construction business and it shows. If they'd spent as much time, effort and money on the course conditions as they did and the spectacular accoutrements (stone bridges and staircases, sculptures, covered bridge, etc.) it could be a spectacular course. Condtions, especially the tees, are average muny condition at best. The greens are fair. Kudos to the staff attendant who tells you that the greens are fast putting down-valley and EXTREMELY slow putting up towards the mountain.

Packsaddle is a beautiful golf course with great views. Every year when I come to VA it is a must play! Yes it is a mountain course so if you have to walk up a hill it happens I don't know what to tell you!!!!
