No ranger
All was well except no one offered to let me play through even though I repeated a few holes and still caught up. A rude father was encountered right off hole 1! I wished him and his daughter “I hope she was” and he just ignored my good wishes. A twosome on the back made no offers as well so I skipped a hole with there permission to go through.
Other than a need for a ranger great deal!

A hidden gem. Dye through & through.
Right from the start we knew this was a top course. Proshop well run, then over to a solid practice area.
It’s a Dye course, so knowing where to hit it helps, since Dye likes to intimidate visually from the tee. Proshop was out of yardage books, and with no hole pictures on the card, or tee signs, it was difficult to visualise where my target should be. Proshop has ordered new books, and I’d love to play this one again. If books are available, I recommend getting one. No GPS on carts.
Conditions were great. Greens must have been aerated recently, but they are filling in, and rolled well. Tight run off areas around the greens, that Dye seems to love, along with lots of small bunkers. Fairways were pretty much perfect. Bunkers were consistent.
When I’m next in the Roanoke area I plan to play The River again.

Beautiful scenic course
A true gem. A beautiful scenic course played in very windy conditions, creating an additional challenge. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Greens had been aerated a few weeks back, so somewhat slower. Got off early and my wife and I were able to complete the round in 3 hours and 15 min. I would highly recommend, provides excellent value for the money and I definitely would play again.

Good condition
It was in good shape, but busy. Took 4.5 hours to play. Everything else was good.

First visit, will be back again
Greeted by Mike at the counter, he took time to tell me about the course and some advice being a first timer there. The greens had been sanded which made for some putting challenges. I understand this has to be done. Other then that, beautiful views along the river and a great day of golf on a nice course. Note: choose your right tee or your second shot could be a long one! Will be back!

Beautiful scenic views every where.
The course was very fair, yet challenging at the same time. The greens were really fast. If you miss the green, the mounds around the greens made for some tricky chip shots. We played late in the afternoon and was able to play as a twosome in less than 3 hours.
Overall, a great experience with the beauty of the New River being a special highlight. Look forward to playing this course again.
Nothing beats the river course
Probably the 4/5 I played the river course. First time I hated it because of the challenge it presents. Ever since then I’ve loved it. Winds are strong. Greens on shelf’s. Bunkers strategically placed. Fairways switch over. And the views are unmatched! This is the best public course is southwest Virginia hands down. Pace of play was a little slow but that is okay since I was a single. I decided to join another single on the back 9 from
Ohio to finish out the round and completed in in under 4 hours. This course is a must play every year if not multiple times.
