Poor Conditions
First time playing and while I enjoyed the layout, and loved the holes that ran along the river, the condition of the tee boxes and greens were some of the worst I have ever encountered. Would not recommend to anyone.
NOT WORTH THE PRICE
After not playing the course for a while, I went again recently and was very disappointed. The conditions were similar to a bad local muni course and I found the layout to be gimmicky. If you're looking to spend over $100 on a round of golf, you'd be much better off driving to fox hopyard for lake of isles
Needing a replay
When I finished I wanted a replay.
We played on a weekday that was forecast for rain. The rain stayed away and so did all the golfers in CT so we were the only foursome on the course most of our round.
There is a driving range and sand traps to practice before you tee off. The range has various pin placements with some elevation differences so you can practice shots instead of just hitting the ball.
Fairways were in great shape as were all the bunkers we were in. Most of the greens were in excellent condition. The course has a mixture of elevated tees, elevated greens and doglegs so that driver off the tee is not always the best choice but there are also some holes to let it fly. The front and back nines are different styles going from a parkland to somewhat of a links style on the back.
Water comes into play on a number of holes and that’s were some local knowledge is helpful. The creek on 3 is not readily apparent on your second shot if your drive is short. The pond on the 4th hole may not appear in play depending on your choice of tees. If you slice the ball then the pond on 3 will get you again on the 4th hole.
I found the back easier than the front and I was 3 over on the back nine until 3 poor shots on the last three holes destroyed me.
I was a guest so unsure of the cost. I would definitely play again if I have the chance.
Worst Course I've ever played that was supposed to be good
This course was rated in the top 75 in America by a major magazine a few years back. It's not anywhere close to that. The back nine is OK, it does have some silly holes. The front nine is a disaster. Hole two has an atrocious fake waterfall. Holes 4 and 5 are below average. Holes 7, 8, and 9 are the worst stretch of holes I've ever played on a supposedly "good" golf course. The off-season rate is higher than what the in-season rate should be. For the rates they charge, I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone.
Great Course
Layout, pace of play and condition of the course were great. Practice facilities are fantastic.
Worth the price
At $140/round for a non-member on the weekend, it's steep, but for an above-average player looking for a challenge, great conditions and an upscale experience, it's worth it.
From the moment you pull onto the property, you can tell you're in for a great experience. The range, short game area and putting green are all located in the right location, adjacent to the parking lot and close enough to the first tee to have the starter find you. A great touch is the clock located between the range, putting green and first tee which helps.
Since the University purchased the property, two changes I've noticed. Unlimited balls on the range and adjusting the layout. I enjoy getting here with time to spare before my round for a thorough warm-up. Flip flopping the front and back nine, to avoid starting on a par 3 was a great change, IMO.
The course is always in great condition and has some extremely difficult holes. 3 of the par 3's can play over 180 from the blues, two of which play 200+ with forced carries and there are a few par 4's with challenging tee shots, 4 and 7 come to mind.
It's a fun test for the avid golfer. I've played with a few members who were awesome to play with and really treated me great. This is a place I try to go 4-5 times a month in the heart of golf season and am seriously considering joining as a member for the practice facility and 14 day advance tee-time ability.
It's worth the drive for most people and highly recommended. Enjoy!
Great track
Great track, but challenging. Always in great condition, great setting and food. Good practice areas, too.
The flip flopping of the front and back was how the course was originally designed. Great river had changed this to start you on the back the par three 10th for some reason. It was a terrible idea and way to start your round. Maybe it made it easier for starters and or pro shop because the true 10th hole is right near starters and pro shop. Finally back to the way it should be. Very nice course but over priced IMO. $80-90 weekdays and $100 on weekend might be more appropriate but location location location. It is close to fairfield county which is high income and really pretty sparse for many good public courses.
