Fun but challenging
For February, the course was in excellent condition. The greens were in fabulous condition. The course is fair and each hole seems to be its own space. I have played here a few times and I love the layout.
Great layout, lots of space
I played in winter conditions. I got a a very discounted price, and the golf course was not crowded. The course layout is outstanding, and quite challenging from a distance viewpoint. It rewards long hitters. Each hole has its own space, because there is quite a bit of separation between holes.
Viniterra
Cold, windy and wet. Par for Virginia weather this fall and winter - still the course was in pretty good shape. About once a month i drive an hour to play here. The great course, courteous and helpful staff, and next door winery make for a great day on the road.
Wet but a great course
First time playing here and I really like the layout. Despite the course being wet and cart path only it was an enjoyable round. I will say that I am glad to see that the course has not removed any bunkers from this course to help pace of play. The bunkers here are strategically placed to make you hit the right club and hit it well. Never playing here before I played from the White tees but will move back to the Green tees next time. For winter golf the course is in good shape overall. Clearly there are some severe wet spots right now but nothing too extreme that you can't play out of. The greens are in great shape and rolling really well. Your approach shot will hold and the putts were running true and quick for Jan. The bunkers are in good shape and I only found one that was a little thin on sand. My only gripe is the price for the time of year. It is a good course as other reviews have said but there is a lot of competition in the area that is just as nice if not better for a better value. I do recommend the course and will be back when things dry out a little and green up this spring. Oh and it was a 5 hour round but that was expected with cart path only. They did have a marshal out to try and speed things up but sometimes there is no way to move people along.
Viniterra
Sixth time I have played Viniterra. Weather was cold and windy. Course was quite wet from all the rain and snow - yet, the fairways were in good shape, bunkers and traps raked and greens were at a good pace and rolled true.
Nice course, friendly staff, good value and a pretty good winery next door.
Worth the drive
I live in Williamsburg, which is about a half hour drive from the course. There are only a few homes around the course, which is mostly surrounded with beautiful hardwoods and always in great shape. The staff is very personable and professional. Looking forward to the opening of the new clubhouse.
off season play
Played off season with dormant grass, temperatures in the low 40's and soft conditions. It was still very easy to pick up on the design and what Rees Jones puts in front of you. There were plenty of areas to stay away from but also wide fairways to play from if you didn't want to accept the challenge of a shot near those no-no areas. Would go back again when in the area. New clubhouse under construction should add to the experience. Did not see another player out on the course this day.
Awesome course. Horrible pace of play
Played a hot deal and hit a couple of locals. 5.5 hours to play 18. In November. Started at 11.15 and almost did not finish.
Course would be amazing. But they need to monitor the pace of play.
How does 2 couples mess everyone’s day up? Playing slow and not caring how big the backup is behind them.
Worth the drive!
Over a 10 day period, I played several courses in the Williamsburg area. This was my favorite. The conditions were superb and the layout fabulous. They have a great practice facility. The clubhouse is a smaller temporary structure, but a new one is currently being constructed. Moving onto the course; there were many memorable holes. I played both the back tees and the next to last tees. I really didn't look at the yardage, the day I played the back tees, until I got part way through and was thinking this is one bear of a course. It plays around 7500, from the tips! I played well, and felt pretty good walking away with a 90. I would only recommend the tips for a scratch golfer, or better. Even the next set up is very challenging for a single digit. You need to have your tee ball in shape, when playing this course. The fairways are fairly generous, but a bad tee shot will often find the trees and usually results in a lost ball. The rough was not too severe, and a well struck shot would allow you to recover or at least advance the ball substantially. The greens were smooth and I loved putting on them. They were fairly fast, but not so excessive that a higher handicap player would feel intimidated. This course is a little out of the way, if staying in Williamsburg, but is well worth the extra drive. It was less than 30 minutes from my hotel, though, so not too far. Because it is a little further out, I don't think it gets the traffic the local courses do. I had some longer waits on some of the other local courses, but moved around quickly, both days I played here. I would highly recommend you play here!
Fabulous course a MUST play
Great Reese Jones layout. Fabulous conditions pace of play was terrific and top notch layout. Super driving range and practice facility.
If you are looking for a terrific golf course at a reasonable price with greens that roll like silk - you found that here! A very modest pro shop and no big dining room but everything else is there including a beverage cart that made 4 rounds. A must play!
The Hidden Gem of New Kent
Traveled to the Richmond area for a wedding and found this place a few weeks prior on this site. Based on the layout and the price I figured it was worth a shot and it did not disappoint.
For starters, when we arrive the Head Pro was there and extremely friendly and outgoing. We spoke with a few members on the practice area and they mentioned that the course was in the best shape they have ever seen and they didn't lie.
The greens were in perfect shape and rolling quick and true. The layout consists of doglegs and various blind shots so I suggest using a phone app or buying a yardage book. Additionally, the course played long from the 6700 yard tees as it was windy and there are various elevation changes.
The course was not very busy so we played in about 4 hours but we took our time if we hustled probably could have finished in 3.5. They are in the process of building a nice clubhouse so there was not a ton to offer amenities wise but the new building looks like it will be a great addition. There is also a winery next to the course so if you are in the area with others that don't play golf send them there and meet them afterwards.
Overall, this place was well worth the trip and the 38$ price on golf now made it even better. I highly suggest this hidden gem. I will be back in the near future.
How Slow Can You Go
I have played Viniterra 4 times. Lovely golf course in very good condition. Pace of play today was absurd.
Front nine took two hours 45 minutes to play. When I made the turn, there were- counting my group - five foursomes on the tenth hole
One group near the green, one group in the fairway, one group on the tee box, and two foursomes standing by.
Pro Shop was notified, but never saw anyone come out to move folks along. After 4 hours on the course and only completing 13 holes, decided that I had enough for the day.
The pace of play for my previous round at Viniterra, on a Thursday, was not as slow, but still took 5 hours. Again, a nice course, but pace of play is not what one might expect on such a quality course.
Advanced Players Course
The course is picturesque but extremely hilly and challenging for the beginner to intermediate golfer. Too many hills and sand traps. Also, very confusing around the parking lot, check in and finding way to first tee. It needs more directional signs. The distance between holes is long and definitely not a course that can be walked. The price was much too high. The only positive attributes about this course are the great, friendly staff and decent sandwiches. I will not be back.
One of the Best Rees Jones Designs Out There
From the proper tees, the course is not extremely difficult. The difficulty comes in the length. But the fairways are generous and well maintained. They're building a new clubhouse currently, so that should help with "atmosphere" however you define that; doesn't effect my review one way or the other. Good variety in the holes, very good conditions, very scenic. Top quality and certainly recommended.
Wow! What an Improvement!
I heard the course was in rough condition in May, but it has come back! The course was in excellent shape from tee to green. The fairways were in superb condition, as were the greens...and very fast. The fairways are generally wide, but you still have to evaluate if mounding or slope will make your ball take a bounce. The course is a challenge, because you have to look at each hole and strategically position your shots. If you just grip-it-and-rip-it, you're going to get in trouble pretty fast. There are lots of trees, extreme rough, and slopes that fall away from the fairways and landing areas. The greens are generally large, but there are some subtle (and not-so-subtle) undulations. Bunkers had nice sand, but there are bunkers and bunker complexes strategically placed. There are some holes with blinds shots (i.e., #18). Better look before you pull the trigger on your shot (not just the tee shot). They don't have much in the way of amenities, but they are currently building a clubhouse, which will be great once it's completed...can't wait. A great course and one worth playing. We had a $39 rate with the Tee Time Book...worth every penny, and more!
You can't give a course a low review because it has too many hills and bunkers. It is not a course for a beginning or high handicap player but that said the fairways are big enough to give options to stay away from the problem areas on the course. It's called course management.
