The Club At Viniterra
About
Situated between Richmond and Williamsburg, the Club at Viniterra sprawls across abundantly wooded hills. There is no shortage of elevation changes on this Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead-designed golf course. There is a difference of as much as 70 feet from the tee to the green on most of the holes. When combined with the mature trees, the result is a tough layout that demands accuracy. Thankfully though, there are not many water hazards to contend with but there is strategically placed bunkering throughout. The golf course also provides a scenic round with working vineyards running alongside the lush fairways. In addition to being challenging, the Club at Viniterra prides itself on their environmentally sensitive practices. The golf course saves as much as 80 percent of the water used on traditional courses thanks to the use of a drought-resistant grass hybrid.

Modern Golf at its Best and Worst
Viniterra is the case study of everything that is great and awful about modern golf course architecture. On the positive side, the course is aesthetically beautiful. The elevation changes, hazards, and angles all come together perfectly to thrill the eye. The problem is that these also mean you can only play the course one way: driver off the tee that avoids a bunker or two in the landing area while also carrying a good distance to get over the gorge between the tee and fairway, then an elevated shot to a green that probably has a significant dip in front that prevents employing any sort of run-it-up strategy. Plus, with the course being so spread out, you not only can't walk, but you can't play fast. I played in a threesome of decent to good players who all played fast, and it still took us over four hours to play.
Even if this type of complaint doesn't bother you, I don't really understand who is playing this course and why. Brickshire, Kiskiack, and Colonial Heritage are both nearby, and both offer similar but better designs, as well as much better conditions. Viniterra has clearly fallen prey to the same problems that New Kent and Stonehouse did: they are either unwilling or unable to hire talented maintenance staff that can effectively deal with the steep slopes and massive elevation changes. Almost every bunker was washed out, while hills often had huge dead spots. Even the fairways were sparse, as somehow the Bermuda is struggling to fill in the gaps.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my round here. And for $37 on GolfNow, it's a bargain. But I also wouldn't return unless someone really wanted to play here. Go once for something new, but I don't think you'll want to return.
Definitely returning to play this course again
Beautiful layout. Outstanding early spring playing conditions. Personable and professional staff. One of the best golf experiences I have had in the Richmond area
Winter is Over
Warm (mid 60s) and partly sunny day. Course conditions were fairly wet from the inch of rain the day before but balls did not plug. Bunkers didn't hold water. Greens were receptive leaving mild ball marks. Just fast enough where my preference was always under the hole. Rolled fairly true. Rough is non-existent as exhibited by tan colored dormant bermuda mown low. Fairways were dyed green and with the rain left lots of tight lies. Tee boxes were good since I didn't struggle to find a good spot. Can't wait for the growth spurt to happen.
Great Course- little pricey
The course is in great shape and ready to play. it is a little pricey but not at the independence level. If you’re willing to take a little drive east of Richmond it is worth the trip. The practice facilities are one of the best in the area, staff is friendly and the food area is good.
Great course. Slow play
Great course for what I paid. Pace of play was slow though.
Great challenging golf course
We played here two days in a row.
Amazing layout and very good playing conditions
Many tee box options for all still levels
Very friendly and welcoming staff.
Thank you!!!
Great course
I loved the course. I never played so good I like all the hills and valleys
The course was a lot of fun to play. The beauty of it was also great.
Viniterra is a must play
If you haven't played this course you need to. It's absolutely gorgeous. Sloped fairways, level fairways, wide open fairways, very fast greens, tee boxes are in very good shape. I look forward to playing it again. It's right off I-64. 15 miles from Richmond and 25 miles from Williamsburg. You won't be disappointed.
Long and Slick
Beautiful and well maintained course. Very long and hilly with very nice bentgrass greens.
Course was in great shape. Fun and challenging to play. Back tees are 7500 yards.
Highly recommend to everyone.
Had lunch which was horrible. Don't recommend it.
Always in Excellent Condition
I walked on and played with a father and son from New York. We had an early tee time, and saw no one going to the tee for over 10 minutes, so we snuck out and never saw anyone in front of or behind us! Glad we didn't wait but slipped out early. The course was in excellent condition from tee to green. The course is challenging with lots of sloped fairways, unpredictable bounces, and some holes requiring target golf. Most fairways are wide, but still require course management to ensure you end up in a good spot. I always enjoy this course, and did on this day as well because of the twosome I joined and the pace of play. Seemed like we had the entire course to ourselves. Always able to recommend Viniterra.
GREAT COURSE - PLAYABLE FOR ANYONE.
Early September, very wet due to two straight days of pouring rain. still, course was in great shape. couldn't play sand traps, as they were lakes; no fault of the course management, just too much rain. Enjoyed our round, even though CPO made for some long walks across soggy terrain.
Whahoo
Enjoyed it all but place of play. Foursome in front would not let our 2 some thru They were slow. Wife played best round of summer. 78.
Viniterra is a must play
If you haven't played The Viniterra you should. It's in very good shape tee to green, Wide fairways. it has undulating greens. Greens are smooth. Pro Shop was very helpful and the starter-Mark gave me some tips on the green. I look forward to going back again soon.
Thank you for your review. We always appreciate feedback on how we can improve. You have to understand that Viniterra is a difficult course and players must not look at the yardage alone with selecting tees. Players should look at the slope and course ratings as this gives a good indication of what tees to play. Most of our normal play will play the forward tees which offers them the most enjoyable experience. As for our bunkers you must realize that we had a week of steady rain that totaled over 5 plus inches. Our Maintenance crew is very talented and is more than capable of handling the conditions of this course. Please understand that with the steady downpours last week we felt it was better not to try to fix the bunkers daily as they would wash out faster than they could push them. Our maintenance crew has 200 playable acres that they need to take care of and I can assure you that the crew is hard at work everyday making sure the course is playable for everyone. As you may know Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina golf courses were hit hard this year with Winter Kill. As you may know Winter Kill is always a problem for Bermuda. Viniterra was actually lucky as this course came out fairly well compared to other Virginia courses. We have talked to many other local courses and they have informed us that their courses suffered far greater losses. The Winter kill takes time to repair or fill in but again, we are far better than most VA courses. The pace of play is usually right at 4 hours for a foursome. We thank you for your review and hope you will give Viniterra another chance once we dry out. Fairways and Greens.
Judging from this review I would have to believe that you are not from here and that you haven’t played those other courses you mentioned this year. I strongly disagree with this review as I play Viniterra, Brickshire and kiskiack quite often.
