Good Friday golf

PLayed on 3-29-2024. Paired up with a twosome - fun guys, bad golfers. I played both Apache Links and Comanche Lakes so I will review both here.

Apache - links style, especially the front 9. Fairway grasses still somewhat dormant made it play fast and a lot of thin lies for approach shots. Patches of dirt in areas more of an eyesore than it affected playing. Greens were in decent early spring shape. As earlier reviews said, poa annua has invaded the greens and made them pretty bumpy and hard to keep putts online. Not too bad though, very playable. It was very windy (20-30mph) so sometimes the ground game worked well. Bunkers were playable and maintained. Pace was pretty good, a group of 16-20 in front of us slowed it a little, but not bad for a sort-of holiday. All in all the Links course was a good value for the money and will probably be even better once the dormant bermuda comes through and the maintenance can kill off the invasive grasses on the greens.

Midday - The Rooster is the the course restaurant/meeting place/bet settling area. Decent food, nice place to rest before the afternoon 18. Friendly staff.

Comanche Lakes - Even windier in the afternoon! This course was not in as good shape as the Links. Several grassless areas combined with some unmowed or overgrown areas just off the fairways. Greens may have been a little less bumpy. The holes that played into the wind were very difficult. This course is more of a parkland layout that does play around several lakes and over the creek quite a few times. Lots of spawning carp in the creek were fun to watch. More of a challenge than its sister course in my eyes.

A fun 10 hours in Glen Rose and a great value for the money. Love to come back here in early fall when everything is mature and hopefully the greens are better. A bit of a hike even from ft worth, but it was a fun day.

Very nice course with right conditions

Squaw Valley is well know and respected in the DFW area and people travel to Glen Rose just to play here. Both 18 hole courses are nice layouts, challenging yet playable. It takes until April for the spring growth to kick in so it was not in full bloom in March. The greens are fast and true, However, the whole region is getting affected by Poana invasion. It’s a real hard problem to get rid of. All courses are trying to cut the greens close and roll on. The staff friendly and very organized and efficient.

Great course for the price

Drove an hour to play this course, was raining all day. Fairways were in great shape! Greens were in average conditions with weeds on them mowed. Would play again that’s for sure tho.

Great course BUT!!!

Great course but the amount of annual rye grass on the greens make them difficult to putt. I play this course often but this year the greens are very bumpy due to the rye grass. Otherwise still a great course!

Still a good course

Overall it's a good course. They still have a few holes that are cart path only for some reason. Half the greens are infested with a clumpy grass, not a grass connoisseur so I don't know which one. Maybe cost me 2 strokes.

Greens need some work but golf in Feb

Course was in ok shape except the tee boxes and greens. Fairways are firm and hard, greens have a lot of poa annua and are bouncy. Good deal for $25 but I’m not sure about the full weekend price. It is golf in Feb though.

Good not great

It was still not quite spring yet. With that being said the greens had a lot of poa annua. I have not played this course for over a year. It is usually in great shape by mid spring though.

Good Day for Golf

Warm January day in Texas. Greens were in good condition for winter golf. Fairways were starting to show some thinning due to being dormant. All AB’s all the course is in good condition.

Overall

The greens and tee boxes aren’t in very good condition. Usually a bunch of groups 4-5 people so pace of play is slow
