Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Iowa (2020 #9)
Reviews
Challenging course
As a couple with a quest for playing golf in all 50 states, we enjoyed this course in Iowa. For a course without many trees, it challenged you to keep the ball in the fairway. First cut was gnarly and difficult to play out of and the second cut, well, very difficult if not impossible to find a golf ball— as one would expect on a quality course. Layout was enjoyable, greens and fairways in good condition. Quiet surroundings, reasonably priced, friendly staff, beverage cart for golfers enjoyment and an overall good course for golfers of all levels. Would play again if our travels ever brought us back to Iowa!
Excellent course
We selected the course just by looking at a course guide for Iowa. Challenging course but playable for an 18 handicap like me. Greens were excellent, speedy but not impossible.Every hole was different so no going back and forth. My wife is a 40 handicap and found it enjoyable and a low handicap player would have a challenge. We played in 3 hours and 40 minutes walking but most people ride due to hills. Not knowing the course I used a 5 wood off the tee which helped keep me in good positions.
Hamburger was excellent afterward with a beer and the course practiced distancing
Friendly and helpful staff.
VERY GOOD COURSE
WORTH THE DRIVE. Honestly never heard of the course as it doesn't make the best courses in Iowa list. But it should. It is very nice. Well cared for and certainly worth the drive to play.
A stern test, but great shape, a fantastic value, good fun
First, I’m biased - this is my home course, but I guarantee it will not disappoint. It’s hosted the Iowa Amature twice. Matt, the superintendent, keeps the greens rolling at about 11on the stimp, and his team keeps it in great shape. They’ve just redone the bunkers on at least four holes this summer. It’s hilly on the back nine, but walker friendly - I walk all eighteen a couple times a week. Jeff, the pro, and his team in the club house are super friendly. Good variety of equipment, and some rentals if you need them. There is a great range, practice bunker, and huge undulating practice green. Once school starts youll find a local college team, and high school team using the range.
No hidden shots, everything is right in front of you. Left of the fairway in in the creek, right in the fescue... so better hit it straight. Some fun downhill dog leg driveable green on 14,that could end up in the water or a putt for eagle, and take an extra club or two for the up uphill par three 13th. Great finishing holes on 18.
You won’t find a better value for the money. Saturday and Sunday mornings will be full of members, and most morning have the Over The Hill Gang going off early, but they move right along. Call in advance so you don’t run into league play in the afternoon/evenings.
Decent Course
Great pace of play for a weekend, greens were fast but fair. Course was nicely maintained, maybe a littlework on the bunkers.
