GlenRiddle Golf Club - War Admiral Course
About
War Admiral is one of two championship courses at GlenRiddle Golf Club in Berlin. The other is the Man O' War, which incorporates part of a historic racetrack that was used to train champion thoroughbreds. The War Admiral Course offers a different character with a layout that is routed through mature woodlands, completely sheltered from the wind unlike its wide-open sister course. The scenic landscape is dotted with water features including a scenic tidal marsh that lends itself to five dramatic holes. In addition to the natural features, there are also numerous bunkers strategically placed throughout. It is a golf course that demands accuracy. Although it is less than 6,900 yards from the back tees, the hazards make it seem much longer. One characteristic that both courses at GlenRiddle Golf Club have in common are the scenic views that can be enjoyed from nearly every hole.

Great course
Very challenging especially playing for the first time. I will be back to give it another shot. Course got the best of me this time. A few mistakes due to lack of course knowledge.
Forced carries, water hazards, and fast greens made this a wonderful challenge. Lots of target golf shots needed to score well.
I highly recommend this course.
War Admiral and Man o War
Both courses offer a great diversity of challenge.... Admiral is parkland style, keep it play or in the trees. Man o War is a real Scotland/Ireland treat, but the bunkers and fescue will get you!!! They have done a great job there and they worked well with a group... deal could have been better but still good. Conditions were excellent.... never worried about a bad lie, greens were great, too. The bar was great for a group, sit down dinner one night of three was excellent; other nights were appys at the bar.... very, very good. Bartenders were very helpful with large group of 16. Great facility... has everything!
Tricky
Great piece of property, didn't need to be more tricked up than the natural area layout
not worth the money
Course was in great shape however the bathrooms on the course we're horrible and fir the price of the course you expect a certain quality. I did not find it here!
Overrated
Played the private course - got a very good rate through golfnow. Would never pay full rate or anything close to a full rate for this course - very disappointed because I read good things about it.
Very plain course and not in great condition even for this time of year but it didn't help that the greens were aerated and we were not informed.
Too many other courses in the area I would rather play - won't return.
Unique Design that must be played multiple times
First, let me say that one round is not enough to rate this course properly--got to play it again!! We enjoyed the course, but, due to very wet conditions, were limited to the cart path--not great for this course, especially on the first round. There are many design features that I do not see usually, and playing the correct set of tees is a must to avoid long carries, improper layups, etc. The rough is very long, although not too thick (US Open-style), and the greens have a lot of movement. I would not pay the full price, but, with use of Golfnow specials, it was a great deal. I MUST PLAY IT AGAIN!!!!!
In primo condition.
Played the course after several days of heavy rain. Course drained well and was in very good shape. Nice layout, and can be a challenge in windy conditions. Like the mix of wooded and bayside holes. Definitely recommend.
Very challenging, great condition.
We had an outstanding time and look forward to golfing hear again.
Excellent Condition As Usual
I come to OC in early September almost every year and play 2 or 3 rounds. I usually include a round at Glen Riddle for either course because they are always in great shape. Got an excellent discount through Golf Now for a late tee time. I played the War Admiral this time and it was in great shape. Bring your "A" game - lots of water.
Triple Crown
A friend of mine once told me that the first time that you play a course adds 10 strokes to your game. While the War Admiral course is beautiful and well maintained, there was more than one occasion where my wife and I didn't have a clue where our next shot would wind up. As a result we lost quite a few balls after we thought we hit great shots. Through it all, we both thoroughly enjoyed our day at W/A. The first 15 holes are in a wooded area. But you come out of the woods for 16 - 18 and the three holes all face into the late afternoon sun. Since we played on a 2:44 HOT DEAL, the last three holes ate us up. They didn't seem to be that tough, but the glare made it so. I would suggest playing W/A earlier in the day. BTW, if you're a horse racing buff, there is a ton of memorabilia on Man O War and War Admiral in the barn/clubhouse.
Above average fairways and greens, extremely challenging back 9, 5 shots over my average.
The back 9 is extremely difficult with many forced carry shots that require shots between 100 to 170 yards.
Great links course but greens were beat up.
Ball marks everywhere, I repaired at least 6 per hole!! I blame the players and the course staff. If you preach green repair people will at least try. Normally in great shape, the greens were the worst I played this week (Baywood, Bear Trap, Rum Point, and even Newport Bay)
I loved the links layout and will be back but I sure hope they start preaching repair.
Traded in Tee times to Play WAR ADMIRAL
I traded in my 2 afternoon rounds on Man-O-War for 1 morning round on War Admiral...Best decision I ever made. War Admiral is by far the best course i have ever played and throw in the GPS on the car and it made my round spectacular. I played from the white tees which I ususally do but it was too short for me on this course (Eagled a par 5). There are 5 tee boxes on each hole and I could have played back on Blue. Course was well maintained and took well placed shots to get in at par. Several times I had to lay-up with a 7 iron of the tee then follow it up with a 5 to the green. There was a variety of different hazards, elevation changes throughout the fairway, Island greens and bunkers over my head.
Great Course. Highly recommended
Loved it...Great Links Course. Course was challenging, Staff was friendly, well maintained, ball placement was key, great afternoon deals, and GlenRiddle courses are best course i've ever played. If you like Man-O-War you will LOVE War Admiral!!
if you like a challenging course this is a must play
do not pass up the opportunity to play this course great value great scenery from the staff just a five-star course.
.
War Admiral - challenging / Man O War: wide open
Played War Admiral on a Sunday as a foursome and was pleasantly surprised to finish in less than 4.5 hours. Course was in excellent condition but was really challenging. This is target golf. From the blue tees, you need to curb your drive under 250 yards on most holes, and there are lots of undulations everywhere. Will need to play it a few times to become familiar with the layout to truly enjoy it. The first 14 holes or so are in the woods so you are shielded from the wind, but it opens up in the last few holes and the wind can be strong.
Played Man O War on an early Thursday afternoon and was able to breeze through the front nine. Course was also in excellent condition with wide open fairways, which also meant a refreshing steady breeze on a much needed hot summer day. The links style layout allows for aggressive drives, good bounces on the fairways, shape your approach shots creatively, and make interesting chipping shots. In my mind, a really enjoyable course to play. We even found a big snapping turtle close to the 18th green, which sent my partner into delirium.
War Admiral - Excellent
Played last week and the course was in fantastic shape. Staff was very courteous. Greens were pristine...rolled true and had great speed. The layout was great...a very well thought out risk/reward course.
Great Course
An awesome course, great layout, greens are fast and true, and it is very challenging.
What a challenge.
This course was unbelievable. The front nine was wide open and beautiful, The back nine is a real challenge. Number 18 is best described as "awesome".
Off Season
Played Man O' War in early March after a Nor'Easter, so it was a bit wet. The course has an interesting layout, and if it's a windy day it can be a challenge. I'd like to see it when firm, since it is a links style layout.
