Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Florida
I have played at Osprey Point since it opened. It has always had fast greens and great overall conditions barely a blade out of place. Last few months I've been very disappointed with the conditions and pace of play. The normally fast greens are now slow and overgrown, infiltration of other grasses in the fairways and collars and removal of natural areas around the course have hurt its looks and play. There at least 5 high schools playing there as their home course and at least one of them not even being a Palm Beach County school make playing in the afternoon impossible. As a PBC tax payer I am ot very happy.
I totally agree with Macbluenose. the place has eroded a lot. The rubbish answer that Osprey gives that "we are just trying to make up for neglected maintenance in the past" is a total contradiction to how good the course used to be under Scotty. the greens are STILL slow; when was Falcon punched? Some 3 months ago and still is uneven. Get rid of whomever is writing on behalf of Osprey and put in someone who actually knows what they are saying.
We apologize that the conditions have not been up to your full approval. As you know, we have done extensive maintenance procedures this summer to make up for previous years of lessened maintenance. This is a large order for our new superintendent to make up for these prior actions. We do believe these practices will improve the overall product after some recovery time, so please hang in there. We expect that you’ll see some benefits from this work in the upcoming weeks. We hope you will take the time to leave another review once the course is fully healed. Happy golfing!
Been playing Osprey since inception. never seen the course in such lousy condition. all we regulars talk about this on the course these days. Greens still bumpy from aeration 10 weeks ago, brown patches everywhere, sides of bunkers and water edges shaved and scraggly, fungus in many spots.
The greenskeeper from last 6 years is gone and his replacement is having a torrid time perhaps because he came from an arid State in the west. management: Please fix these problems. All summer has been difficult from one nine constantly closed, deteriorating conditions, Don law tourneys, high school tourneys a,d college tourneys.
"Look on the bright side, the tournaments are over in a few weeks" says the person writing on behalf of Osprey. Actually, look at it in reality: in 3 more weeks, season will be starting. there are already French-canadiens on the course now. When season ends, you guys aerate, the full course is not open til about October, plus you have schools constantly which take up 1 of the 2 open 9's, then you have the tourists again. It seems PBC cares not a whit about it's own residents, we were the taxpayers who built this course, remember? I have spoken to some 20 regulars and we are starting a program to monitor Osprey and to petition and find ways to improve conditions for the locals both through management and politically.
Phil, thank you for your comments. Osprey Point has undergone a demanding maintenance schedule this summer. The purpose of this maintenance program is to minimize the impact of aerification on the players of Osprey Point, by aggressively attacking one nine at a time. This has allowed the players to play 18 holes with minimum negative effects. We know that the conditions have not been perfect, but were necessary to prepare the course to be better in the long run. The new superintendent is experienced, knowledgeable, and working diligently to ensure green are smooth and the speeds are back up in the next few weeks.
We are in the midst of tournament season currently. This is a conscious effort to promote community involvement, by hosting numerous junior events in order to promote the game to young golfers who are just getting started. We apologize for any inconvenience, but on the bright side, the high school and college seasons end in just a few weeks. You will likely see a decrease in afternoon congestion after their seasons wind down. We very much appreciate your continued support.
Only played nine holes (Falcon), and it was amazing. Very nice layout with excellent course conditions. The wildlife is incrediabke, and there are no houses on the course. Please do yourself a favor and play here, especially if you’re on vacation.
We'd suggest you take your own advice and return to check out the other two nine hole courses! Thanks so much for the great review.
First Time at Course
First time playing there and this course was very very nice even the pouring rain for two holes!! There is one warning though, if you do not have somewhat control of the golf ball you may want to bring a lot of extra balls. I think two of the other guys in my foursome lost somewhere around 3 to 4 dozen balls.
Thanks for checking us out! It sounds like a few players in your group got a good look at some of the natural wetland areas that run through and around the course. The fairways are wide, but if you spray it a bit you surely will find trouble. We're glad you enjoyed your experience and hope that you will join us again during your next trip down from New York.
Pace of play
It was a busy day at the course so the pace was slow. Usually the pace is on track. Over all the course was great as usual.
Hello and thank you for playing Osprey Point. We are a busy 27-hole facility, but have 18 holes currently closed for aerfiication so we apologize if the pace of play was a bit slower than usual. Our goal is to provide the best conditions possible so rather than having the third nine open with freshly punched greens, we are letting them heal so they match the quality of the other greens. We hope you understand. Keep 'em in the short stuff!
Course is laid out well.
Played Raven & Falcon. Hawk was closed, but is my personal favorite.
Raven tees, fairways and greens were good.
Hawk tee boxes & greens were recently aerated. Fairways were in good shape.
Would definitely go back......at the right cost.
Wish the parking lot wasn't so far from the temporary clubhouse and also the cart barn. Hate leaving my clubs out of my sight.
Thank you so much for the review. Once the construction of the clubhouse is complete, there will be a few more parking spots added that are closer to both the clubhouse and the bag drop. Hopefully these will do the trick and you won't have to lose sight of your sticks. We appreciate you coming out to play and hope to see you again soon.
Can't believe it is county-owned
We played the 9 for 9 special on Falcon just after noon (in July in South FL). Apparently there are lots of other crazy people because the course was quite busy, even on a stiflingly hot weekday. The course is gorgeous--natural with no encroaching houses or condos. The Paspalum greens roll great and the fairways are in wonderful shape.
We'll be back!
We're thrilled to hear you took advantage of our $9 nine-hole special! We're also thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the course so much and intend to return. Music to our ears! We'll see you again soon.
Like this course - well maintained
Well maintained course. Greens, fairways, traps were all in good shape. Friendly staff all around. Good to know they are remodeling clubhouse and building a restaurant. Much needed and will enhance this course.
That's right -- we're expanding our clubhouse and adding a restaurant. We expect both to be open in 2019 and we can't wait!
A Real Gem!
First time playing here, and couldn’t have been more delighted! I was paired up with another group and they were excellent to play with. The course was a little wet but nothing that was out the ordinary. The tee boxes were great, the fairways plush and the greens although they had been punched maybe about a month ago were fine. I would highly recommend this course. The price was a steal!
We strive to provide the best public golf experience possible for the best price possible. Reviews like this make all the hard work worth it. Thank you so much and we can't wait to see you again.
Played Falcon-Raven. Falcon should be tip top in a week or so. Greens still a tad sow due to punching and seeding. Still rolled ok. Ravens greens were much quicker. Overall course is in great condition. Good challenge and can’t beat the price for a course surrounded only by nature, no urban sprawl. Highly recommend this course. Looking forward to coming back and getting on the hawk soon.
We very much appreciate the five-star review! As you mentioned in your review, there is not a single home on the property and we border the Everglades in West Boca, so there is no shortage of wildlife. We look forward to your return, but want to let you know that Hawk will be closed until at least August 1 due to aerification, so you'll want to give that nine a little time to get the full experience. Cheers!
Went with a friend to play a game. They set us up with a third guy who was very friendly so it was all good. The first nine holes was great! Tee boxes and greens were nice and smooth. The second nine was not as good. Course was not back to par after airating it and being closed for a month. Greens had no true line you could aim on. Usually not a problem at this course, don't know what happened this time. They are redueing the proshop and making a bigger eating area. Should be really nice when finished.
First and foremost, thanks for coming out to play. As you noted in your review, we did have that nine closed for maintenance and in another week or so, it will be back to its normal self. Aerification is a necessary evil - especially here in sunny South Florida. We hope that you will return soon so we can have the chance to turn your four-star review into a five star.
Another great round
Osprey Point is a great Palm Beach County recreation facility. It is 3 nine hole layouts that allow the course to decide which two make an 18 hole round. Played Falcon/Raven today. Hawk closed this month for summer maintenance- Falcon was closed last month. Great time again. Course conditions were good on Falcon, the punch work was still growing in and greens were a bit slower. Raven was untouched so greens were great. Course congratulations were wonderful. Playing in an area without housing everywhere- priceless. Great value and conditions.
Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We decided to close one of our nine-hole courses each month over the summer to do maintenance in hopes of being able to provide the best conditions possible for 18 holes all summer long. We look forward to your return. Keep 'em in the short stuff!
Very Nice Course!!
For a county course, extremely nice layout and conditions. Fairways and greens in great shape. Fairways wide and receptive on most holes, though they throw in a few tight holes which makes for a more challenging course. Greens are slower than what they appear to be. Rangers should move slower groups to a faster pace. We will return!
We are one of five golf facilities owned and operated by Palm Beach County's Parks & Rec department and our goal is to provide the very best public golf experience possible. Your five-star review makes all of our hard work worth it. Thank you.
A hidden gem in Palm Beach County
The course has always had great reviews. I booked a round with a coworker that plays. The friendly bag guys took our bags and directed us the the pro shop. The pro shop was in a trailer as they have construction on the original beautiful facility going on- no worries. I was here to play golf, not socialize. The proshop employees were efficient, fast and friendly. They checked our reservations and thanked us. We paid and the bag guys directed us towards the starter area. The starters were extremely nice and was able to gets us on 15 minutes early and join another twosome. Local knowledge was shared by the other players to make a great round better.
The course is laid out in western Palm Beach County. The wildlife and natural beauty is in full display. The course is very fair with most problems in full view. The conditions were superb, lush fairways and beautiful greens. I will definitely be back.
What a fantastic review. We border the Everglades in West Boca and the wildlife and scenery you spoke of is truly what makes us special. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed yourself so much and can't wait for you to return.
Best municipal course around
There are usually three 9 hole courses to choose from. One was closed but the Raven and Hawk were in excellent condition. Some narrow fairways. Out of bounds is very rough. A little short from the white tees but overall great experience. Coming back on Monday.
Our goal this summer is to not have anyone putt on aerated greens, so we are closing nine holes for a month each to do maintenance before moving to the next -- always leaving 18 holes of good greens! We look forward to seeing you again on Monday.
Challenging and fun
Three 9 hole courses and you play 2. Good experience. Greens were good, hard, and a little furry.
For a municipal course, everything was really good. Definitely a place we will repeat!!
Thank you so much for the five-star review and for recommending our course. We truly are a "muni" as we are owned and operated by Palm Beach County's Parks and Recreation Department and we aim to provide the very best public golf experience possible. We look forward to your next trip to see us.
best public course under 40 dollars
there are 3. 9 hole courses and this was the first time I played the "Hawk" 9. Course is in great great shape and design is hard enough to challenge me and my son. it is a very popular but they do a good job of spacing out the tee times. Really friendly staff, and beverage cart on the weekends. they are redoing the golf shop and adding a Restaurant so it will be a little messy at the entrance but no problem with the golf
We very much appreciate the thorough review. We are indeed expanding our clubhouse and adding a restaurant which should be done in 2019. We appreciate you taking the trip up from Coconut Creek and hope the good course conditions are enough to entice you to make the trip up again soon. Cheers!
