The Nicklaus Design Course at Vidanta Puerto Penasco
About
Jack Nicklaus and his son teamed up to design the course at The Nicklaus Design Course at Vidanta Puerto Penasco (formerly known as Peninsula De Cortes Golf Club and Peninsula Golf Club at Vidanta Puerto Penasco). Half of the layout plays along the Sea of Cortes while the other half wanders inland through native wetlands and desert vegetation. Long hitters will enjoy this golf course, which stretches to more than 7,000 yards. The Nicklaus team designed a challenging layout but the rugged terrain also deserves credit. They utilized not only the natural hazards but also the stunning views, which are as varied as the challenges. Every hole is framed by a backdrop of the desert, mountains, or sea. The signature hole is the par-3 sixth. On this tough hole you'll be met with a series of waterways that sits between the tees and the green complex, where four bunkers are also lurking.

A MUST PLAY
First off I have to say the course is a must play. We played this course twice. It was our First visit to rocky point for wife and I. We stayed at the grand mayan(also incredible) and our room was on the 15th hole of the course. They shuttled us over and the enjoyment began. The bag drop guys, Jose and Sergio, were very nice and got us set up on the cart. Checked in at pro shop. There is a six dollar each extra Mexico tax charge but course is well worth it. Wife and I teed off in 25mph winds. Best advice I can give is pick the appropriate tee boxes. Course can be tough especially throwing in the wind. I see, as I am in the golf business in Phoenix, way too many people play the wrong tees then complain the course is tough. This Nicklaus course is lush so don't plan on much roll on your tee shots. Now to the course. Everything was manicured. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were plush. So many great holes not even counting the Ocean side holes that are so scenic. I would definitely play the course twice. There are a few blind holes and a few holes you are not sure on distance of hazards off tee box. I played one tee box up from the tips. The course is very challenging from there which is what I like. My wife played the senior tees which are by the ladies and the course is much easier from there. After our round we had a delicious lunch on the deck which had another great view. Final note: I have been golfing for over 37 years and played all over(Scotland, Hawaii, ect) and this course is in my Top 3 not counting the great value. The views are incredible, but again just make sure u pick the appropriate tee boxes so u can enjoy this course to the fullest.
Plan ahead
Be sure to check in at the hotel first where the golf shop is. The actual corse is a couple of miles down the road. Course in good shape but a lot of maintenance work is going on and the temporary dirt road in is terrible
Fabulous course!!!
We loved it! Beautiful holes along the sea of Cortez! Weather was perfect and the two gentlemen that started us were amazing! They informed us that the clubhouse was shut down from hurricane but that we could go to the nearby hotel and enjoy lunch at one of their restaurants! We took their advise and were greeted warmly and given restaurant information! We chose to lunch outside by the water at the Grand Mayan and the food and cocktails were amazing as well as a very skilled and attentive staff! Was a very special and memorable day for both of us!
Best kept secret
This course is the best kept secret. I saw one couple on the course during the whole round, Great ocean course. Fantastic views of the Sea of Cortez.
Challenging but very playable
Played on Thursday and Saturday in the afternoon (after 2) and easily got 18 in. Very few other golfers out there likely due to Easter Holiday and high winds on of the two dates. Wind guts along the ocean were over 40mph but course was still very playable. Will be back when I visit Rocky Point again.
Ocean Paradise
Such an awesome course setting to play in. The ocean is along side or in front of you on a number of holes. The amount of bird life was surprising and great to see as you played.
The completion of the clubhouse would be a a great addition to the experience.
The only recommendation would be to have hole numbers at each tee location, otherwise a fantastic experience you don’t want to pass up!!!
The staff was superb!! No clubhouse on site(under construction…I think) Course is challenging and the views are incredible. If you’re in the area it’s well worth it.
Great course and staff
Played this course many times and it never disappoints.
Challenging course and friendly staff.
The only downside is the price of drinks and food.
Terrific course
Very long and difficult course. Precision around the
greens is required as well.
Must Play
Course is in great shape. This is always a must play…. Greens are in tremendous shape right now. Staff is always great!
It was Amazing
My girlfriend and I had a great time playing here. Weren’t many people so we got to play at our own pace. Overall it was awesome!
