Earl of Mar Golf Course
About
Located west of Glasgow, Earl of Mar Golf Club overlooks the River Clyde with views that stretch beyond the Kilpatrick Hills. A scenic forest filled with more than 250 chestnut and beech trees shaped the design of the course, carving the doglegs and framing the greens. It has a traditional parkland layout that offers a fair amount of challenges balanced by generous fairways that are beginner-friendly. Many holes present interesting risk-reward opportunities where good strategy and some skill will get you far, but they are not too punishing if you are slightly errant. Weaving through the trees requires accuracy and numerous strategically placed bunkers emphasize its importance even further. There are only a few holes that play right alongside the river though golfers will enjoy scenic views on almost every hole.

Will try again
Unfortunately the weather took the shine off my day but will definitely be trying here again in the summer, liked the layout with different types of holes & lengths & a very easy golf course to walk
Mar hall
Got a lot of bad reviews from members but for me considering last 2 mths weather i enjoyed rhe course and played well on both visits yes course was wet but very playable
Mar hall golf
Have to say I have read some of the reviews by ex members and have to say I found the course in fairly decent condition considering the recent weeks of rain we have had I have played the course a few times over recent mths and found it reasonably priced i booked it through golf now for £30 a round which for me is an acceptable price the hotel and course has recently been taken over by new management and hopefully in time they will spend money upgrading the course but for now I will definitely go back in summer mths
Needs some tlc
Some Fairways were like walking in a swamp mud everywhere
Greens covered in moss and had been spiked so gave up on trying to putt
One fairway had a fallen tree on it
Practice putting green spiked covered in twigs and stones also no flags in the holes
The flags on the course were all ripped
A fair few divots not been repaired
Disgraceful
Absolute disgrace of a course place has never seen a green keeper, green’s covered in moss fairways littered with debris and bunkers look like a land mine went off in them do not waste a penny going here.
Mar hall 6th january
Unfortunately a poor review but nothing to do with the course like everywhere else course was at mercy of mother nature and she wasnt nice on the day had a course inspection at 12.00 and opened course even though majority of corse was frozen over i have played this course once before in better weather and enjoyed my round that day and the scenery around the course is breathtaking will definitely be back in spring for another round and in better weather highly recommend giving it a go
Winter greens and tees in play so wasn’t great. Course was looking ok for this time of year but definitely needs some love to get it back into shape.
In a state
Absolute cheek charging premium rate for a course that has been allowed to degrade to this extent. Owners should be embarrassed.
While all greens were being cored, there was no pre warning of this.
Winter greens and there were 5/18 holes without a pin placement. Where there was a pin placement, this was on the actual fairway, which was not maintained.
A shocking state.
Neglected
Nice golf course found it quite long but Mar Hall in administration and consequently green staff cut to minimum which can be seen from the neglected tees in poor condition and bunkers with tufts of grass all over them and hard packed sand. Shame really as nice course
Course condition let it down
Uncut greens , bare tee boxes , fairways were good but again uncut in places bunkers were green with weeds nice layout off course amenities were average at best , beutifull setting this place could be so much better if maintned to any sort of level
Course in poor condition
Having played Mar Hall on a number of occasions we played again last night. Firstly the layout of the course and it's location are stunning. Unfortunately, the hotel and golf club have went into administration and it looks like the up keep of the course was one of the first things to be cut back. The tees are in very poor condition and the bunkers are a mess with grass pushing through the sand on a number and bunkers not racked. The fairways and greens were okay, fairways looked like they haven't been cut to their usual depth and the greens although smooth were very slow which i have never seen before. For the money we paid (£37.50 pp) I wouldn't be in a rush to return as there are other courses in the area in better condition and nowhere near as expensive. So sad to see such a great layout in such decline.
Marhall GC
Wasn’t expecting much on a Monday morning so wasn’t disappointed. 1 staff member on, though to be fair she was really friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Course in not too bad condition considering we didn’t see any green staff. Greens very good, layout excellent, bunkers though were badly needing raked. They’re very big US style so I could see the problem, you’d need an army of green keepers to keep them in shape. Me and my playing partner decided to give ourselves a free drop out of them as most were unplayable. Fairways badly needing cut but overall not too bad. A little overpriced at £60 pp considering the conditions but would be nice to play before a competition when in tip top condition. Heard it was up for sale with membership dwindling badly so not surprised maintenance levels have dropped. No food served in clubhouse on a Monday so we didn’t have lunch. We had an added bonus of spotting the Waverley sailing doon the water.
Fabulous course.....in waiting.
Picked a simply perfect day to play Mar Hall. Course was quiet, just the tiniest of breezes and around 20C. Superb. Arrived just before tee off time maybe a few minutes later than I should have but the lady at reception was unbothered and told me to take my time. On the first tee met a club member (Mike) who played nine holes with me as I was on my own. Excellent company to add to my enjoyment.
The course itself has a wonderful setting by the River Clyde aside the Erskine bridge, The fairways were in great nick however some teeing areas were really quite poor to look at. Greens as well, though not terrible could be a lot better. So sad to see this because with the course layout it has the potential to be a cracking top notch course. It is quite lengthy so presents a challenge to shorter hitters like myself but is also fairly flat so is manageable for most to walk I would imagine.
Having paid £33.99 that wouldn't put me off playing the course again. So all in all it's a YES from me.
Don’t play this course for
Don’t know where to start. Don’t play this course. We paid £50 and I’ve seen the greens at Vikingar putting in Largs, in better condition. Tee boxes and bunkers were in an outrageous state with little to no grass, unraked sand and big stones all over the place. The course condition, overall was an utter disaster. It needs closed and given substantial TLC. An utter mess and to see Erskine GC next door with nice crisp greens and bunkers was heartbreaking. Play any other course but here.
Money grabbing and nothing else. What a disappointment.
Seen Better Days
Had great expectation from good things I'd heard about course. Every tee was in a deplorable condition, little grass. The greens were very poor. Fairways were well kept. Stuck behind a corporate day out - 2hr 45min to do 9 holes!!!! Nearly packed it in at that point - instead played the 1st nine again.
Poor greens were better in April 23
Had played in April 23
Very good Course conditions at that time
Greens currently bland and not true
Fairways not taken care off
Good day out
Good course with good variety of challenging holes
Good value on Golfnow.
Course is reasonably laid out however I found the lower half next to the Clyde very wet underfoot considering no rain for several days. The top half was in good condition however the tees need a lot of work and are very poor. A good value round though.
