Surreal Round at Streamsong
This was my second visit to Streamsong after previously playing the Red course. What a golf resort this is... We chose to walk and boy did we get our exercise. The greens were probably the fastest I have played all summer. This course will punish you if you hit on the wrong side of the flag. Unfortunately, our round was cut short due to thunder and lightning. Can't wait to go back and play the new Black course next fall!
The Real Deal
There are places that ooze golf and this is one of them. The golf holes just flow out of this abandoned phosphate mine. I actually preferred the Blue course over the Red, perhaps because I played better than I scored on the Blue and scored better than I played on the Red. Loved the blowout bunkers Doak created. I would highly recommend using a caddy the first time around either course. I'm a big fan of short par 4s and there are some great ones here. Nos. 6 and 7 are among my favorite holes I've ever played. The Lodge is incredible. The rooms are really luxurious. The restaurant in the clubhouse was excellent. You will need a ride to and from the practice range so allow the necessary time. The 19th hole - a short par 3 adjacent to the clubhouse - is a great bet settler or cap to an afternoon. My only constructive feedback is that when we arrived to the course the second day, our clubs that had been stored were put out on the bag stand before the sprinklers came on and everything was soaking wet and had to be dried before play.
Once in a Lifetime!
A course unlike any others in Florida.
The day I played the conditions were very windy, so windy you couldn't even wear a hat. The conditions of the course were outstanding, especially for better players who enjoy tighter lies and having to be creative. Only negative on the course condition side is a decent shot that may miss the green by inches may turn into a lost ball. Happened to me on a couple of occasions.
Pro shop staff was great. Asked them many questions regarding the property and future courses and they took the time to inform me.
Outside staff and caddies were sub-par. Outside staff was running around frantically. Caddies were not engaged in the round and seemed to rather be anywhere but there.
I would definitely come back in the future, especially hope to play the Red Course and future course(s). It is a place that every avid golfer would enjoy playing once, but may not feel the need to come back a second time.
Great layout
The blue starts off with a super tee shot (some 60 feet above) and it continues to present some fun and challenging golf. Make sure you know where the pins are because your misses will determine how you score. Nice greens, tight lies, and very open fairways are features of the blue course.
Slooooooooow. Play
This course is awesome. Doaks vision was incredible.. Now the bad.... 3 hour front nine and 5:45 total...if your going for the money grab....... You better move things along.. We walked, but the exit areas where the carts go were 100/150 yards away from greens... We were told that high handicappers were playing black tees.. That should be addressed at the starters box..
Streamsong Blue course
From the time we pulled up to the facility in the middle of no where,it was first class. Staff at the lodge were very friendly. Very similar to Cabot Links on Cape Breton Island.
Very happy that we decided to come down and play.
Doak doesn't disappoint with Streamsong Blue
Playing both courses for the first time, I came in with great expectations although I heard some criticism from some of my colleagues. With that being said, I was't disappointed and unlike many, I probably liked Tom Doak's Blue Course a little more than the Red. The Blue feels a little more like links golf (a trademark of Doak's), though you can run the ball up on both courses. The Blue has larger, more severe greens, which while they are tricky, can also be a lot of fun and very interesting.
Splitting hairs at Streamsong.
Played this course after playing the Red on the same day. The Blue is Longer and more Difficult than the Red. It is also a longer walk. The greens have more contours than the Red and hitting the proper section of them is vital. All that being said, it is still a great golf course.
I might have to say that the par 3s at this course are better than the Red. They vary in direction and distance so club selection can be interesting. I used everything from 8 iron the fairway wood. The 7th hole is the postcard hole and is next to the 16th at the Red. Both play differently because of the downhill vs uphill, green size and shape.
The par 5s are definitely more difficult than the Red. There is one (the 14th) that has a stretch of bunker 100 yards out to present a heroic second shot. Even for the long hitter, I think that two of them are 3 shotters.
Par fours have variety with short and long mixed. There are two that play downhill at the end, but you will probably remember the uphill greens more.
Overall, a great golfing experience. My guess is that low handicaps would eventually like this course more. It is more difficult and once the greens are known, then it might become a favorite for the scratch player. Regardless, it is my 2nd favorite course in Florida behind only the Red and I have played the public tracks across that state so that is no small compliment.
Better Than Expected
I've been looking forward to playing the courses at Streamsong. We walked the Blue course as a twosome first thing in the morning. We had two excellent caddies (Blake and Chew) and the course conditions were perfect; especially for this time of year. The Blue course is much more open off the tee than the Red course. The Blue's defense is without a doubt its greens. They are extreme in contour. You need to keep the ball below the hole and hopefully hit your approach to the same section of the green as the pin. The caddies were very helpful when guiding us through the many blind shots on this course. My caddy in particular was great in knowing when I needed help reading a green and when I didn't. He knew the right times to step in and suggest a different club or shot shape as well. We played in about 3 hours and 15 minutes. Then went back to the lodge and enjoyed the pool and spa.
Less Dramatic But Just as Strong
Recently played this one and the companion Red a bunch of times over a few days. We all started off thinking the Red was the best course.....but I don't know. Certainly Crenshaw and Coore seemed to get the more dramatic land. Doak did an amazing job with what he had though. A lot of very interesting holes where you have lots of choices.
The greens are tricky because of the grain.....thank God for the caddie. Downhill putts can screech to a halt like they hit valcro.
We played 36 each day and tried to be done by 4:30 when daily the big thunderstorms would roll in . This apparently is near the place in the US which gets the most lightning strikes per year! They blow a horn when the lightning is 10 miles away but our caddie kept us on the course .....foolish or not we always finished.
I could happily play the Blue and the Red every day for a LONG time. Different, interesting and conveniently side by side. Looking forward to returning.
Be prepared for the greens, they're tricky.
Full disclosure, I goofed. I drove there from Orlando (2 hours) and only played 18 holes - the Blue instead of the Red.
The Blue (Doak) was good, but from most reviews it sounds like the Red (Coore/Crenshaw) is clearly the crown jewel of the resort. So if you only have time for 18 holes, play the Red. If you go 36 holes then take a crack at both.
The Blue was good, but you have to be ready for the tricky greens. In fact, a couple of them seemed over the top. If you're above the hole you're going to have a tough time keeping the ball on the green. That happened to me a couple times, and I feel like I hit the ball well most of the day.
Make sure you select the proper tees too. The silver (6,200 yards) were to short and the black (6,700 yards) were to long on this fairly windy day. So we had our forecaddie figure out a hybrid of tees that made the day enjoyable.
Not a golfers golf course
This one is a local members type of course. We waited every shot for the first 6 holes and got hit into 4 times- they must have been blind golfers.... I did collecte 6 really nice golf balls in the process. No practice range, tiny putting green, decent greens, poor rough, spongy around the greens, 11 holes were nice....
Best thing is the clubhouse... VERY good food.
Yes there is an excellent practice facility (with a HUGE green) a short shuttle away. Just ask next time. This is actually a world class course which is just a different type of test than the Red which no doubt is more immediately appealing.
There is a driving range and the course is beautiful. The course is made for walking and not driving so if you walk you shouldn't have to wait at all. Also it is a links course so the rough and fairways but the course is well maintained and awesome
