Ashby decoy

Played here on Monday afternoon, blackboard In car park on arrival explaining 1st & 18th closed ! We pitched up early so we could have a bite before playing, sorry no food available on Monday’s, chefs day off. The staff were very apologetic. A bag of crisps and coffee later we went to pro shop to sign In, the pro was very helpful in explaining how to play 18 even though two holes were closed, Ashby have 2 full length practice holes that were brought into play, easy, now the course, overall in pretty good order, autumn approaching they was a lot of worm / crane fly casts everywhere, which you would find anywhere, a tight tree lined course, which did feel a bit up and down at times, the amount of trees did a good job in separating the fairways, greens were consistent if a bit slow, bunkers consistent and fairly placed around the course, tees were good, overall the course was good challenge of your capabilities, some really tight shots off the tee, bet it looks great in the summer.

Well established

Well established. Nice par 3s. A lot of holes have tunnel tee shots do need to be straight off tee.
Grerns true roll. Fairways desperately needed water.

Challenging, well designed and varied

After the driest summer I can remember the course played brilliantly. The bounces on the fairway were fair, greens holding and tee boxes taking a tee peg!
Every hole offers a couple of ways to play them, some shape for a draw, some for a fade. The par threes are excellent, really well laid out and well defended. Every hole demands a solid tee shot, not necessarily long but well placed.
There is no straight up and down par 5 but that’s a good thing!
There is a lot of internal out of bounds, I’m not sure they were necessary on each occasion.
Pace of play was excellent, I downloaded the course map from the website before I travelled, well worth doing as the next hole is not always obvious from the last green.
I would not hesitate in recommending this course, I’ll be going back myself soon!

Nothing to write home about

Confusing course layout. Very few to virtually no next tee direction markers and some holes gave no clue to the hole layout. Could really do with on tee hole maps for first time players. J played the course along time ago and could remember very little of it. TBH the course has gone downhill in my opinion. Sorry to say but Ashby has become nothing more than run of the mill.
