Average at best

Hard to write a review at this time of year because of the poor weather. Putting the rain and wet ground aside the condition of the course was terrible given that it is now into the start of the season the tees either had no grass at all or were like playing from the rough, fairways and greens were ok given the weather but I couldn’t bring myself to go round for the second 9.
I can see that there is potential for a nice round so I might try it again in the summer and see if it is any better.

💩

Absolute dog💩. The owner needs to put some serious work in, doesn’t look like anything’s been done at it for ages. Nearly walked in from 1st tee it was that bad.

Terrible

Should not have been open. Terrible condition throughout the entire course. Tees are the worst I have ever played on, none of them are flat and only patchy grass. Fairways are sodden, it's difficult to just stay on your feet and lost balls plugging really deep in the middle of fairways. Greens we not too bad given the conditions but extremely wet, short chips plugged but you can't run a ball in because of the terrible patchy ground around the greens. As with the reviews below, the course needs some serious attention, I doubt anyone would want to return after playing it once, it needs a serious overhaul, especially the tees.
The only positive of the day was the clubhouse was nice and welcoming but no pro-shop or anywhere to buy balls unfortunately.

A treacherous walk spoiled

I played this morning and can’t understand how the course was allowed to be open. We could hardly stand up walking the course and it was a mud bath, you have to tip toe around all the sloping fairways otherwise you’ll be flat on your back. Looks like they’re just desperate for green fees because it really should be open for health and safety reasons never mind the poor playing conditions.
I work in ground maintenance and it’s laughable to see how easy the fix would be to get the course draining better. The course is on a hillside so it should drain fairly well but all the ditches are full of trees, branches and rubbish. Just get someone out there with a shovel and clean out your ditches and it will be a lot better.
Fairways poor, greens terrible and tees are the worst I’ve seen.
The only positive was that we pretty much had the course to ourselves but I think that says more about how poor it is than anything else.
I wouldn’t normally criticise people’s work but we had to laugh at the bunker on the hole after the par 3, I’ve seen some poor revetting in my time but it looks like this one has been rebuilt and just one thick row laid. Our apprentices at work could do a better job with their hands tied behind their backs. Dig it out and do a proper job, not a bodge it and scarper job.
The famous saying goes that golf is a good walk spoiled and that nearly sums up our morning but it wasn’t even a good walk.

Absolute Disgrace

I’ve never played a course in as poor condition. I know it’s been wet this winter but it looked like they’ve just left it to go to rack and ruin. Tees were crap, fairways terrible and just divots everywhere and greens were shocking. Molehills just left in place all over the course, even on the edge of greens so if you’re just a few yards from the green you have to chip over them.
Most courses I have played recently, although wet, have been in good condition and I could see all the winter prep work for the new season but Bakewell looked like they’ve just downed tools.
To make things even worse we got stuck behind a group of members who never offered to wave us through and it took nearly 5 hours to get round.
Don’t waste your money playing here, it’s terrible.

Course is worst I have seen for April

Play this course regularly between April and October. Been today for my first visit of this year. The course is the worst I have ever seen it condition wise. The rainy weather has definitely not been kind to the course. Will leave it a couple of months till the course has dried out.

Nothing as expected

Attended the course today with my brothers expecting a well kept course and a lovely round. However it was far from and ended up walking off after the third hole. All of the holes over cross with tee boxes behind greens and having to tee off over a previous green this was only over three holes and wouldnt want to see what the rest looked like. I would stay well away.

The course is very hilly, so you get plenty of exercise while playing golf, lovely views and kept in good condition,
Will play here again.

Getting worse

I generally play Bakewell a couple of times each year but my last visit playing in their open will be my last.
The greens are always the best part of the course but they have been getting worse and worse over the past few years and are currently terrible. Very patchy, bobbly and extremely slow. I class myself as a decent golfer playing off 10 and it was demoralising watching good puts bounce off line and miss the hole completely. I don’t know how members put up with these greens every week. The pin placements were quite questionable as well in that they seem to put the holes where the worst of the bare patches were. To be fair, the 3rd and 5th greens very ok but the rest were dire.
The fairways are in decent nick but I lost a ball on the first after a what I thought was a great drive pitching just over the steam a couple of yards left of the fairway….. a missive bog you can’t even step foot in to try and find your ball.
Tee’s were also poor as previous reviews say. I love this quirky course layout and expect undulating lies on the fairway, that’s half the challenge at Bakewell but I could hardly find a flat lie on the tees either with very questionable tee marker placement.

Nice layout but poor condition

Upon arrival we were excited to play Bakewell and we were greeted by friendly members who showed us the way to the 1st tee.
Stood on the 1st tee the views were stunning but unfortunately the views are the only positive of our day.
To start with, we couldn’t find a flat stance on any of the tees, it doesn’t look like they ever move the tee markers or have ever seen any maintenance as the ground is rock hard and full of divots and animal scrapes.
Keeping to the fairway is a must because if you miss by just 5 yards you will lose your ball due to all the grass cuttings. Hitting the fairway is not easy though because every fairway slopes sideways and even a perfect down the centre can result in a lost ball.
If you manage to get your ball to the green you won’t be able to keep it on as they are like tarmac and don’t look like they have ever seen a drop of water. There are bare patches, they are already looking brown and if your ball hits one of the hollowtine holes it will bounce up in the air and miles off line. If the hollowtines aren’t enough of an obstacle for you to try and avoid the old cup holes have all shrunk by a good half inch so it’s like putting on a crazy golf course with your ball bouncing all over the place.
Despite the lack of water on the greens and tees, the fairways still have wet bogs in two places on the 1st where we lost balls on and also the walk to the 3rd fairway is treacherous down a steep slope through a slippy bog.
Although the green fee is well priced, unless you just hit your ball safely 50 yards in front of you every shot you will spend a fortune on balls and there isn’t even a pro shop or steward to buy any extras.
We loved the views on a stunning sunny day but my god, this club need to employ someone who knows how to maintain a golf course. We have played sea side pitch and puts which have been in far better condition.
The actual course layout has lots of potential to be stunning but unfortunately it looks like one of those courses where a farmer owns it and just chugs round on his tractor once a week to keep the grass down and does little or no other work to it.
And extremely disappointing day out and we couldn’t even get a drink after our round in the sweltering heat.

I apologise that you have found the course so not to your liking. We have experienced some mechanical breakdowns recently, beyond our control but totally acknowledge that knowing this does not help you and the subsequent problems with the course have clearly spoiled your day. Our course is maintained to a high standard and things such as the slope of the fairways, due to the courses situation on the hillside at Bakewell are part of its character. I have contacted you separately with a more detailed reply. We have in the past received many favourable reviews on both its position and condition and once again can only apologise that you didn't find it to your taste.

Requires Significant Improvement

As an avid golfer and frequent visitor to various courses, I must say that my recent experience at Bakewell left me utterly appalled.

From the moment I arrived, looking over the short 9th hole, it was evident that we were going to be in for a tough day.

We did not book and were pleased to be able to pay cash at the bar and set out for our round as quicly as we could change our shoes. As soon as we set foot onto the first tee it was evident that it was not being adequately maintained. The first cut of rough was covered in grass cuttings and making it difficult to find our balls never mind achieve clean shots and ruining the overall aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, the greens were like putting on a cheesegrater with inconsistent putting surfaces that severely impacted the playability of each hole.

Moreover, the lack of attention to detail was pervasive throughout the course.

I understand that maintaining a golf course requires significant effort and resources, but it is disheartening to witness the neglect apparent on every hole. As a paying customer, I expected a level of quality and care that was sorely lacking during my visit. The deteriorated state of the greens and tees reflected poorly on the establishment and affected the overall enjoyment of the game.

I implore you to take immediate action to address these issues and restore the course to an acceptable standard. Regular maintenance, including proper irrigation, consistent mowing and diligent bunker upkeep, is crucial to ensure a pleasant experience for your patrons. If tees are too much work to maintain at least provide containers with seed and sand for players to repair their own divots.

The bunkers had matting showing through the sand which was dangerous and in the one bunker I went in on the 5th hole, I nearly lost my ball due to it being burried. It was evident that it had just been overfilled with excess sand to hide yet more matting.

It would be worthwhile providing an accident book especially for the rabbit holes on the 7th tee as there is an extreme risk to hobbling off with a broken ankle.

I sincerely hope that you will consider my concerns seriously and take the necessary steps to rectify the current state of your golf course. As a passionate golfer and returning visitor to Bakewell I would love to see this beautiful course restored to its former glory, attracting golf enthusiasts from all around.

You could easily have a gem of a course, in an excellent tourist location, without requiring too much work but I implore you to invest in providing the basics of standard golf course requirements ie quality tees and greens and a mower which picks up the cut grass. On the day we played we were half expecting to see hay bails being collected up in the rough.

Thank you for reviewing your round of Golf at Bakewell. I am sorry that you did not enjoy the experience of playing on our course. We have recently experienced some mechanical breakdowns, beyond our control, and the grass lying in the semi was as a result of that. I acknowledge though that this has had an impact on your enjoyment of the day for which I can only apologise.
Our course is normally maintained to a high standard, as you will see from many previous reviews. I have passed all your comments regarding bunkers and other areas of the course to the relevant person.
If you wish to contact me directly, I would be happy to discuss your visit further.

A Little Gem!

This was my 1st visit to Bakewell GC, but it certainly won't be my last. Everything about the course, clubhouse and even the car park on arrival, oozed tranquility. I cannot recall any other club that has such a relaxing, yet organised feel. The course is demanding, but fair, with a fair number of 'risk and reward' shots to be taken on if players are brave enough. Do beware of a couple of points where holes intersect each other and always remember to ring bells to indicate to the following group that it is safe to play their shots. I was playing alone and within 5 minutes of starting my round a two ball very kindly asked if I would like to join them, but I politely declined as I only had time to play 9 holes on this occasion. Both the wonderful wildlife and breathtaking views over the town were a joy to behold. Overall, I'd recommend this course to all golfers, unless the steeply sloping fairway gradients are likely to prove overly exerting.

Great course

To say the course had several days of rain it stood up well.
Only noticed a couple of boggy areas. The green are well kept and the overall condition of the course is great.
A good challenge for all levels of player. Big accurate hitter can score well here.
I will definitely be recommending the course to others and intend on playing it again.
