Good day out on the golf course
I've played at Cobtree Manor a few times now whenever I visit my wife's family in the UK. Close to their residence and great value for money at just £16 for 18 holes. Played at 7am this morning and it was a cracking day weatherwise. The course looked in great condition and played really well. The greens were firm but played true and pin positions were in places where you had to think about shot selection.
I play off a 25 handicap and it may not be a challenge to allow handicappers as much but I have played a fair few courses around and Cobtree presents enough of a challenge to warrant going back for another round. I will definitely be going back at some stage next week for another round.
Didn't try the off-course facilities (bar/bistro etc.) but they had a practise green, some nets to warm up at before the first tee and plenty of parking available.
Ok but not great
First finding it! Getting in and out from the motorway is not straightforward.
The views are wonderful from virtually every hole. The greens were very slow and there was only a Varner of sand in most of the bunkers.however it has enough variety to make the round enjoyable.
Please think before playing, winter mats and poor condition!
Points I would like to raise as problems with our round (we were a 3 ball and paid about £90 approx.)
Tee off time was 7:38am
Etiquette of the course,
i. Players must play without delay, only 5 minutes must be allowed to find a lost ball and a match losing one clear hole must allow the following match to play through.
ii. Divots must be replaced, pitch marks repaired on greens and bunkers must be raked.
i response:-
1. We were approached on the 10th tee by an older gentlemen with grey hair and high visibility jacket (yellow) on, he made an unnecessary passing comment about slow play.
2. The 4 ball in front of us being 300 yards in front, I highlighted it was not a safe distance with our driving capabilities and the 3 ball behind us were still on the previous green.
ii response:-
1. The condition of the course was the worst I have seen it for the given time of year.
2. There were patches of mud and divots all over the greens on multiple holes (please see evidence attached)
3. The winter mats were the biggest problem with very seldom places to actually put your tee in the provided area (please see evidence attached)
4. The winter mats were covered in stones, a brush could have been a solution, instead spent a long while not trying to damage our drivers any further than had already happened (please see evidence attached)
Additional Points
1. Now I appreciate there are winter mats in play but there were no yardage signs to indicate how far this had adjusted the distance of the hole by.
2. Your yardage signs are actually wrong at present, they are stating there are only white and red tees, yet there are yellow and blue tee indicators in the ground? (please see attached evidence- you even have 2 white tees indicated on your new signs, see secondary e-mail evidence)
3. Other players were complaining and cursing at the condition of the course and when I went into obtain details and raise the issue was told people had been commenting on how good the course was for this time of year, really (please see evidence of condition of course)
4. Our drivers are now damaged due to the level of stones on the winter mats and the stones wedged in the broken tee holes, some stones are very fine and coarse making it hard to detect
Our experience of Cobtree has been good before, hence why we booked to play here, but we all feel angry and let down.
Overkill?
The insistence on hedgehog wheels for electric trolleys was a major problem. The course is quite hilly and pulling a hand trolley gave me knee and backache. Not sure this was necessary especially with lithium battery trolleys which are much lighter. Also the use of mat tees with very poor places to insert tee pegs was a major nuisance. Otherwise considering the time of year the course was in reasonable condition, but not quite up to the standard of other local courses we have played recently.
Golf in December!
The course was in remarkably good condition given that we played on 2nd December! Not surprisingly, there were a few temporary tees but this did not detract from our round. All greens were in play and were in very good condition.
Managing the tee offs
I've found on every occasion the tee off times are not check every, which of course means a lot of bunching and waiting about, play is very slow, and no one seems to come out to check what's going on. After playing the front 9 our 3 ball have up. The club just seem very happy to take your money, but checking on tee off times and players just being really slow no one wants to know. Such a shame.
Cobtree Manor
Last played here 30yrs ago. Much improved.
Staff helpful and friendly. Course in good nick and so we're the greens.
Will be back again next week.
It was just as cheap, if not cheaper, to pay at the club rather than use the Tee Off Times website. So very disappointed as there was no discount like they advertise, so doubt if I will use Tee Off Times again.
Good Value
Popped in here one evening for a quick 9. For a pay and play course the greens were in surprisingly good nick. Quite short but with some interesting holes that retire a bit of thought off the tee to avoid hazards and running through dog legs. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
Used teetimes to book just as well because if I'd paid full price would have asked for a refund, the course was quite nice but the greens were the worst I've ever played on.
