Great course to play but very poor green and tee boxes
This is a great course when it’s in good condition but as of late that’s not very often.the course itself fairways and very good but the major let down is the greens for me they haven’t been in good condition for months now.very untrue running bobbling everywhere and very slow.ruins your round playing on such bad greens.hoping they improve soon
Great course
The wind did blow but what a fantastic test of golf. Great shots are met with good results, poor shots are findable and have a workable ending and very bad shots get what they deserve.
Honest course with great greens and an abundance of character. Awesome fun.
I would love to play this course again when it wasn't windy.
Good parking, club pro let me go whenever I was ready on a quiet Sunday afternoon playing alone.
The pace of play was great, I think I saw another person on my hole once, at the end of the 500 yard 14th (I think) as I was tee'ing up.
Good:
Lovely variety of holes, particularly given 99% of golf in West Yorkshire is either entirely Moorland or Parkland. Obviously, there is very little parkland to be found at Halifax GC, but a lot of the par 3s and some Par 4s on the front 9 do a really good job of imitation, keeping it from being entirely Moorland golf.
Clubhouse was lovely and the regular who asked me how my round went seemed genuinely interested. Lovely bloke that he was, clearly clocked that I would not be able to tell anyone about my round as I'd played alone. Let me talk about my first ever (very wind assisted) Birdie of a Par 5 than I had any right to
Greens were fast and really well drained, given the weather of late.
Fairways were in very good nick (not that I spent much time on them) as well.
A very challenging round.
Bad:
Not much to complain about, but the course map on the scorecard is essential on the front 9. Many times you are looking up at 3 flags and it isn't immediately blazingly obvious where to go.
Notes:
I didn't ask, but you really should ask/be told outright by the pro for tips before going out, there are 3 holes from memory that are pretty blind and laying up an iron on them is a far better idea than going with your gut (and the course map) and hitting driver.
Wind - Holy god, wind is the biggest obstacle on this course. The back 9 was a brawl with the sky. I hit a par 5 in 4 (on the green in 2, and I am not a good golfer), then hit the par 4 that mirrors in reverse it in 9 because driver/hybrid/hybrid didn't get me to the green. I wouldn't say this is a critique at all, but just take it on the chin that if you're not scratch, that wind can and absolutely obliterate your score.
Fairways are really short, fast and hard as well as being quite undulating. This, with the wind blowing, had many shots that would normally have you giving a little fist pump of joy at hitting the fairway, resulted in balls rolling 25 + yards into the rough, about which...
If you're more long than you are accurate, playing alone and new there, bring extra balls - I played it very close to the line as I had forgotten to move balls from my trolley bag to my carry bag for the round, so set off with only 6 in the bag, which with my handicap and eyesight was very dangerous.
The rough is like a black hole. I added a good 6 shots to my final score due to simply not being able to find balls that I am 99% sure I would have found playing in a group. 2 of these were on blind tees mentioned earlier. So just bring extra balls if you're the kind to lose a few off the tees.
I am a fairly healthy 33 year old, usually carry bag who plays a lot of hills disguised as golf courses in the area, so the walking wasn't a particularly big deal, I have walked much harder courses locally, however if you're not in the best of shape, this course could prove a hard walk and carry.
The 17th is great, I would really, really have liked to have played it with anything approaching accuracy as priority. The wind was directly completely blowing in my direction and so simply landing a ball down there and not in the fearns was the main goal over anything else.
Final point - I really like the ferns in the valley on the walkways. Halifax is a genuinely pretty course to walk.
Really enjoyed it, will be going back.
Great course
Dont know who's complaining about the greens they must be a professional golfer as course immaculate fairways great nick greens spot on and a great lay out always enjoy playing here especially in the sun
halifax gem
great course great price could do with better signs to direct golfers LOL
Course in great condition, golfers in poor condition!
This was my 3rd visit, played this hilly course in 26c with 2 friends, all were suffering on the 18th fairway but once again thoroughly enjoyed this demanding course which as always, was in great condition. One of my favourite places to play, especially on the rare days of beautiful sun high on the moors above halifax
Halifax GC
Loved the layout, two particular holes requiring significant attention as had no idea where I was going but we’ll prepared for next visit. Nice test of golf in heat!!
Excellent condition
Course is in great shape, very hilly and some shots and holes quite tricky as not obvious where the hole or green is. Enjoyable
Excellent value
The course was in good condition and the weather conditions were quite benign thankfully (wind). Some testing holes on this moorland course but thoroughly enjoyed playing. Staff also friendly.
Only play if you have somert to give you yardages
No course guides available.
No course app to you directions and yardages.
No usefull info on hole pics on tees.
No coulered yardage dots in the fairways
Only 150 yd posts on some holes
A lot of holes with valleys, ditches, streams etc. In play from tee, even with an iron, or on 2nd shot, so without all the above, how the chuff are you meant to know what club to take?
Won't be going back ever.
Did not live up to the hype
Booked on spur of moment as was visiting my Mum down the road.
Arrived in plenty of time got ready to play & bounced into pro shop to be greeted by a very miserable pro. I announced who I was & what time we’d booked, I asked if there was anything we needed to know? I said I’d read a few reviews & some had said it was difficult to know where to go to next tees, he responded & I quote “there’s a course map on the scorecard & anyone with an ounce of common sense can easily find their way around” I wear glasses, but not for golf (varifocals) so I had to tear that part off & give it to my son who can see.
His attitude rather set the tone, not a very friendly welcome.
It’s a tough start into wind, I lost 3 balls in 1st 4 holes, so hard to judge the carries when you’ve never played here. After about 6 holes we said, let’s just enjoy it and overall we did.
Greens are very poor, had to belt the ball to get it to the hole, didn’t make a single put all round.
Some of the tees are just dead grass & of the standard you’d find on a badly maintained municipal course.
I guess it’s tough to maintain as there are no obvious signs of an irrigation system here. I saw plenty of ground staff when we were on the course.
We caught a two ball up who were in front of our 2 ball on 14 and asked what time they tee’d off. 90 minutes before us, how can you be so slow?
I wouldn’t come back, I’m quite fit for my age, but my knees & hips were aching at the end & my thigh was cramping up driving home. My 26 year old athlete of a son felt the same.
It was forecast 20mph winds, I’d describe it as a little breezy. I’m sure some holes are unplayable when the wind gets up. I hit driver, hybrid to a 350yd par 4 and came up short and I’m no slouch. I also hit an 8-iron through the green on a 180 yd par 3. I hit it 200 yards, normally about 140!
We left without sampling the clubhouse, mainly because of the pro, not the course. We both played within sight of our 11 & 12 handicaps from allegedly much harder courses? I do think the slope rating for this course is wrong, (by quite a lot), maybe they came on a day with no wind, same thing happened at my home club & we got them back on a typically windy day & got it changed.
This is not a whinging review it is just as brutally honest as the pro appeared to be. By the way, we found it hard to know where to go, especially as yellow pots were missing from some tees (notably the 1st).
Give it a go, prove me wrong, but I couldn’t enjoy my golf here & I’m glad we came, but won’t be back.
Enjoyed West End last Saturday much more.
Little gem!
After reading all the reviews on this course decided to book it, and it didn't disappoint!!!! If your looking to smash driver off every hole the opening 7 holes will be tricky, you have to think about it and actually play the course, fairways and greens are firm, so club selection is key. The holes do open up around 8/9 so get the driver out but be warned if you run out of fairway the rough is tough. Then back 9 is played mostly on the top of the course with two par 5s into wind but it is a little bit more forgiving in terms of having to really think your way round. The 17th as everyone mentions is and absoulte gem of a hole, wind was off the left played 158 to the front of the green hit and 8 iron and went miles over the green so good luck!! Played at 4pm and the course was quiet just a 4 ball 4/5 holes in front. Will defo be back here and would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to try something different
