Cheap but not very cheerful
Hotel, bar and staff were great but the course is unloved. General quality was just shabby. Greens were ok but ridiculously sloped so at times an excellent putt just ran away from the pin uncontrollably. Far too many areas of the fairway unkempt. Just disappointing. At £20 on a Sunday afternoon, great value but won’t go back. Staverton only 4miles away is loved
Helidon
Played on a Sunday large groups of very slow senior groups of "5 Balls". Not sure the course manager was fully aware of the situation. But the course is in great condition, best it's been for a long while, worth playing and good value for money.
Nice course for reasonable cash
A fairly challenging course in places, in great condition given the recent weather with brilliant greens.
Good layout
With a little more care cutting the grass and defining the fairways this course great. Few areas in need of repair, good greenkeeper would sort it out.
Not a members club, very quiet on a Saturday morning.
Challenging Course
Challenging course for a mid-handicapper. Undulating terrain, so a test physically. Good par 3 finish over water in view from the balcony. Comfortable looking hotel, so food neither basic or cheap.
Nice Course
Good course with the right amount of challenging areas. Nice rural setting, good views. Some greens and 1st cuts a bit tatty, but otherwise well kept. Ok hotel bar for after.
Doesn't live up to potential.
The course layout is good, every hole is different which offers a good variety. Course condition lets this down massively, the greens are in shocking condition. Nobody minds a 'tough green' as long as they run fairly true - Hellidon greens are bobbly, patchy and do not run true. Rough is longer than normal but I don't like to judge this too much as makes it rewarding for hitting the fairway. Fairways are kept OK, nothing to write home about. After the round, we went for a pint and was shocked when charged over £6.50 per drink. 3 pints of lager was £19.65. With drinks prices this high you would have thought some money would be put in to the course. Also, no cash accepted. Will not be rushing back.
Expensive,poor greens
Have played Hellidon several times and have always enjoyed it,a scenic walk with plenty of good challenging shots and water playing on several holes. Today however the course was a bit scruffy and the greens patchy and hollow tined, quite normal for the time of year of course but would have thought a reduction of the green fee should have followed in the circumstances…£35 was massively over priced considering it was half that last time I played….doubt I’ll visit again till the rate becomes more reasonable.

Good experience
It was blowing a gale and winter sun in your eyes but still nice day out, green staff grit and polite trying to keep leaves off fairway.
Shouldn’t have been open
I booked on to play with a friend to have a good catch up having not seen each other since pre christmas. We phoned Friday and Saturday and was assured the course was open and playable and at no point had been told how wet parts of the course were. Having completed our round we looked more like we had been rolling around in mud than playing golf such was the state of our clothing and equipment. Some which has had to be binned.
I was surprised to find this as no trolley ban was in place to protect the course. I appreciate the course needs to make money but at £35 per round struggle to see how you are justifying the cost with what was presented on the day.
The 11th in particular was atrocious. The tee boxes on probably 14/18 holes were awful to the extent we had to move to what is classed as the “ladies” tees and they weren’t much better.
The course needs to do something
Hellidon
Pleasant welcome. Course is in need of maintenance, Tee box markers are only bits of wood painted on either end. Difficult to see in the autumn leaves. Some greens are dead with bare ground in patches. Shame, used to really like this course. Put some money into the course. Please.
Awful - Overpriced
Terrible layout with players all over not knowing where next tees are, Loads of holes don’t have a plaque showing what hole they are playing and the layout is really confusing and we wasn’t the only ones unsure, Also fairways and rough in poor knick - Fairways too long and rough way to high and not maintained well at all, Get ready to lose balls after playing fairly good shots, 36.00 a round is daylight robbery avoid much better places available for better prices
Course wasn’t as good as last time I played!
Played Hellidon lakes four times now and it’s been superb until yesterday when I played, the amount of grass cuttings on the greens made them basically unplayable as the ball picked up that much it would alter the putt.
Most fairways were in good condition though apart from a few that looked like second cut rough.
Greens
The course is nicely laid out and could be a great course. The greens however are very very poor and roll (bounce) very slowly to the point it was pointless even trying to read them.
Beautiful views
A nice course with interesting holes. Greens clearly will get better as the season progresses
