Winter Golf
I couldn’t believe the condition of the course after all the rain. Only one corner of the course was wet. All greens were excellent and after mild frost even got a bit of run on 5he fairways. Only problem was a number of frozen water in bunkers which were GUR which helped my playing partner more than me :-)
Excellent course in January
Given most of the area is flooded we phoned arround and was surprised that Heythrop was fully open aith not temp greens or tees. Heythroup is a prestigious location that is worth a visit or stay given its hotel and manor house. The course is really tough, long and lots of walking so be prepared. It has some great, challenging holes that keep the round interesting. It does have long walks between some tees but never an issue for us. Given the time of year the course was in excellent condition. Green good, tees alittle scruffy but okay. Fairways were failry firm which allowed some roll. Overall we were very impressed that the course was in a very playable condition given the extremely wet weather. We will be back.
Only slight negative is that the old clibhouse has gone and if you want a post game drink you have to use the main hotel lobby bar. We did not bother so cannot comment but felt a little strange the previous stud bar is no longer in place,
A good challenge
Greens were great, especially with all the recent rain. Course is a good challenge with 18 very different holes. Our 4-ball teed off at 10am and finished at 2:30, despite the course being quiet. This is one of the longest walks of any course I’ve ever played. A buggy is seriously recommended. The first hole is a tight tee shot but after that the par 4s and 5s are very open off the tee. A good mix of par 3s.
I understand there’s work going on with the whole complex but very disappointing we couldn’t get a coffee anywhere at 9:45am on the weekend.
Great course
A fantastic course in excellent condition after the amount of rain, the greens where fast and true, the fairways had drained really well
A few long walks between some holes, but a great course layout which made for a great round of golf
Challenging course
It is physical. a lot of ups and downs and a push trolley helped taking the stress away so I can focus at playing the ball. 😆
No club house
Nice course definitely need buggies
No club house food and drinks only available in the hotel which is a long way from the golf car park and course.
Excellent course
Great course in excellent condition, fairways and greens. Very scenic, excellent value for money.
Disspointing
A stunning location in the Oxfordshire countryside with rolling hills and mature tree lined fairways. Let down massively from the moment you arrive with next to zero facilities, no food and beverage to talk of, no practice putting green and a fairly benign driving range.
We were warned of some 'irrigation issues' upon checking in, but nothing prepared us for what we found. A fairly baron dry course, with poorly defined fairways and many greens with large burnt or dead patches. The recent weather and amount of rain doesnt compute as to why there is so much poorly conditioned areas. Greens were like concrete in places and the best of shots never were rewarded and didn't hold the surface.
Fairways had not been cut recently and lacked definition, rough around the edges. Bunkers had no sand, you got a better lie in the car park and had more chance of a predictable contact with the ball.
Its a shame, as this could be an iconic venue. With the beautiful architecture and amazing countryside transporting you away from the rest of the world....some TLC, and a good mow and cut, sand in the bunkers...and a consistent watering (there are plenty of lakes BTW!).
Course was in great condition compared to other courses this time of year. Greens were pure and definitly fastest I have ever played on. Fairways also faultless. Off the course not great as putting green is being reconstructed. Nowhere for a beer after which was annnoying but there was a pub down the drive.
Overall greenkeepers are doing a great job on the course, can’t say much for the other facilities
Underrated course - top conditions
Having read a few negative reviews I was a bit 50:50 about booking a tee time at Heythrop but having visited the venue I can attest to it being in immaculate condition despite recent heavy rain. Fairways were excellent, greens were fast and firm and the pace of play was good considering the fairly long walks between some holes. Recommendations to improve the course: put more fresh sand in the bunkers, invest more money in practice facilities and improve the golf shop/social facilities post game.
Heythrope Park Golf
Golf course was in a very good condition considering the amount of rain the couple previous days. Pro shop staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel initially said that we couldn’t come in for food as we didn’t have a room booked and they charge everything to a room number. Eventually found a staff member that said of course we can do lunch and we can pay by card. Great course but needs a few more finishing touches to the facilities.
Great course. Long walk. No real post game bar or pro shop
Great course. Long walk between holes. Not much else
A Hidden, Parks Golf, Gem
We played this course after one of the wettest Marches on record and we were impressed with the quality of the course both the fairways and the greens were in good condition. The bunkers had suffered due to the heavy rain over recent weeks but will improve as they dry out. A great course layout and some really good looking holes, many that presented a good challenge but were very fair. I would definitely play there again next time I’m in the area.
ECLECTIC HOLES
This course has a selection of holes that you would find individually on many of Britain's better known courses and as we played remembered the likes of Woburn, Stoke Park and other interesting parkland courses.
Warner Leisure Hotels need to reinstate changing areas and a place for refreshments if visitors are to enjoy their visit and feel they have received value for money.
No hold ups
Only our second visit since before lockdown' harder walk than we remembered but loved the course...first group we caught let us through and never saw anyone in front after that :)
Only thing we could fault was that the tee's were sometimes way forward.
