This course has been on my radar for quite some time. Often a want to play somewhere for so long makes you build it up and set an expectation that many courses would fall short of. Not Hunstanton. Driving down country roads on a cold November afternoon it was great to receive a warm welcome from the pro shop upon arrival. Paid my green fee which at £60 is good if the weather is kind. As the weather in the UK had been rain for the best part of 40 days and nights I wasn’t expecting the course to be in the condition it was. The fairways were still bouncing and the greens rolling really nicely. Holes 1 and 2 had some work being undertaken on the bunkers but this is expected during the off season.
I felt like the opening few holes gave you an opportunity to settle into the round. Fairly flat with the bunkers being the only real trouble. Then things get interesting on the 6th hole. A short hole that looks straight forward from the tee. Once you get towards the green you realise that missing the green is not a good idea. Steep sided with a sloping green. I can only imagine many medal rounds come off the rails here. The 7th is a cracking par 3 through the dunes. Back to back par 5s wrap up the front 9. The first was into the tenth of the wind requiring 3 well struck shots to still finish short of the green. Turn 180 degrees and it’s driver and a short iron to set up a good birdie chance.
Onto the back 9, this to me was a stronger set of holes. It felt like the bunkers were more imposing the greens being a bit more severe. And now with the beach being in play on a few holes.
I loved holes 15 - 18.
15 is a cracking par 5 reachable in two. The 16th has two tiers that you just can’t see fully from the tee. 17 with a large drop off to the right of the green. From down there it’s a really hard shot up the slope to a narrow green.
Coming up 18 with the clubhouse behind and the sun setting was a perfect way to finish off the day. A good chance to sign off with a tidy 4.
Into the clubhouse the bar staff offered a warm welcome where I had a quick drink and a slice of cake. Both fairly priced.
The bathroom/shower facilities were excellent with towels available.
This has slotted itself firmly into one of my top 5 courses and I hope to return next year with a bit of course knowledge under my belt.
Thanks for the warm welcome and a fantastic golfing experience.
