Expensive
Played before they raised green fee prices, was happy to pay the extra as they said they’ve spent a lot of money on the course. Was disappointed to find stones in the green side bunker therefore lots of stones on the greens and bunkers GUR even after lockdown. Lots of ground under repair also. 18th is miles from the clubhouse which wouldn’t be so bad if it was easy to get served a drink after.
Bunkers....need care and a load more sand...
First hole.... take care as nearly got hit from wayward shots coming from the range. Nets aint high enough.
But cannot complain of the quality of the course. Overall Some great looking holes and the greens are very quick. In my opinion... devil's drop is a beautiful hole... well kept fairways and I will be bookinga round again very soon .
Nice little course, bunkers were very flooded but fortunately did not go in any during my round. Pace of play was pretty good just over 3 hrs for a round.
I've played the course many times and even though quite tight in places, due to the course being very short long irons can be used on most tees.
Challenging but does not merit the price
£30 too expensive at weekends. This is a public facility. The good points: The couse isn't easy and you need to play well to have a good score. The greens are good and require thoughtful putting. After the first few holes the course becomes more interesting. it has an inland links type of feel. The course handles lengthy periods of rain well, not many wet areas. The bad: The bunkers are a horror story. Avoid them no matter what. There are some long walks between the holes but you have to accept this because of the shape of the land the course is built on. There is a design fault in the middle of the course with several tees too close to each other, resulting in people walking about in all directions when others are teeing off. There appears to be no irrigation system so after a hot dry spell the course becomes as hard as concrete, almost unplayable. But overall it is enjoyable provided it isn't too busy.
Only just ok
Quite a tough course for a high handicapper. Bunkers poor but to be fair we’re classed as GUR. Lost my ball in the bunker on the 11th as full of water. More like a pond. When booking, staff were fantastic. Main gripe - pace of play!
I’ve been playing for 45 years and we were behind the slowest 4 & 3 ball I’ve ever experienced. Whatever happened to golf etiquette?
Will not rush back
Playgolf
Tees fairways greens good ,still rubbish bunkers that don’t drain so allways full of water
The greens were in very good condition, as were the fairways
Enjoyed the round. Played before and will play again.
Good course
Great well looked after course. It is sometimes a long walk between holes but ok with a buggy costing £20 between two people
Nice course but...
My first time playing the course and I enjoyed the layout. It has a lot of variety which I enjoyed. However the pace of play was a joke. We tee'd off at 10:50 on a Thursday and by the time we reached the 14th (Par 3), there was a 2 ball on the green and 2, 2 balls waiting to tee off in front of us. This made the remaining holes very stop start and not enjoyable.
Fairways are like concrete
This is my second time playing here, first time the tee boxes, fairways and fringes were in tatters and like playing off concrete. The rough was so long it was impossible to find your ball even if it trickles in.
I visited a second time as I thought I’d given it another chance but course conditions are still absolutely shocking and there has been no improvement at all.
Don’t waste your money.
Tough course
Playgolf Colchester is a short but tough little course. I've played many times so there is a draw to come back. Unfortunately what people say is true the bunkers are generally poor with too much solid sand and stones and the greens are in a poorer condition than they should be. Lockdown has adversely affected many courses and only time will tell if they can recover but money will have to be spent. You get used to the noise of the A12 ! It's a test but shouldn't cost more than £20 !
Far better maintained courses around
Haven’t played at playgolf in a year or two and wow this course has really gone down hill. Fairways & greens really poorly maintained. Range balls spilling out across the course. Far better courses around the area.
Expensive and naff
Bunkers are terrible, greens bumpy, rude staff and the worst thing is the walk between holes. For example it's about a 10 minute walk after you finish the 18th, that's all you need when you're knackered.
This all would be forgiven if it was cheap but it's not, if anything it is on the expensive end.
Slow play
Very slow play, as a 4 ball after 5 holes we was 10 minutes ahead, then we was held up by a 2 ball in front and was 1 hour behind on the 15th tee we had 3 groups behind us all waiting to t-off. We mentioned to the staff and he said is what it is, very poor.
