Shame
I’ve played this course more than any other probably. Mostly because without a membership it’s the only place around where you can get an early tee time. It’s an ok price as well, although creeping up in recent years to a point it’s no longer worth it. Eg for a couple quid more you can play Luton Hoo. My main complaint is the course conditions. Uneven lies on tee boxes. Fairways not cut well. Greens like a ploughed field. Why are 9 and 18th greens always like a swamp? Fairways covered in range balls. Bunkers rough as guts. It’s a shame because the layout is quite good. Pace of play is ok and they’re trying to stop people wandering on and playing without paying that was out of control at one point. Staff all seem very nice. If you can get a deal and are learning to play then probably an ok course. It’s in such a state now though that it’s a just not enjoyable. Shame.
Off mats!
I have played Little Hay many times and it is like an old friend.
The layout is good - but to protect the tees (presumably - or speed up play) we were off mats which made the course quite a bit shorter.
One observation (for many years now) the greens are very slow and bumpy (easy to blame when you miss that putt!)
It was still enjoyable and with a "Hot Deal" - fabulous value at £13.
Pitch marks not repaired
Overall for the price it's okay long challenging course. The course needs some attention especially the greens. Players aren't repairing pitch marks either which doesn't help. Could do with a fairway trim before spring.
Slow play!
Not in the best of conditions for the price,I know the weather has not been the best but other public courses are in better condition!
Greens were pretty shocking and the pace of play was terrible !
Shame because with a little tlc this could be a cracking place to play!
Staff were very friendly and attentive!
Not great
Very disappointed. I know that it's winter and temporary tees are sometimes necessary. There were 18 of them and it wasn't mentioned anywhere on the website. They also allow players playing 9 holes to tee off on the 10th which is very annoying when you finish the 9th and at then held up for the entire back 9 by slow play. Due to it being a public course, don't expect bunkers to be talked or pitch marks to be repaired. Won't be going back
Rubbish
This is a joke of a golf course
Firstly golf balls galore from the driving range over quite a few of the holes took ages to actually find your ball even if it was on fairway
The greens are an absolute shambles hae played on many a better winter green and we all know what they can be like
Was only a 2 ball but the 4 ball in front had no intention of letting us through obviously stuck up members
Seriously 1 of worst courses ever played
Great if your learning
My son is learning and this was his first 18 holes. It was lovely to play together. I’d say this is a great place to start, nice and open. The greens were awful and THE worst I’ve ever played on, but it didn’t matter. If I was playing with my friends I wouldn’t play here, but if you’re taking someone as their first round it couldn’t be better.
Such a shame of a course- Has massive potential
Arrived to play with issues of Booking through GolfNow. Little hay system doesn’t show GolfNow bookings. Then we got placed with other groups to fill the spot(didn’t know this was how GolfNow worked). Upon teeing off they were backlogged with 4x 4 balls in front. Delaying play by 45 minutes. We were a 3 ball and took us 5 hours to complete because of slow play and back log. The greens were in poor condition with big chunk taken out. Looked like someone Tee’d off on them. No pitch repairs had been done. Come 4.30pm new groups started walking on and playing who hadn’t even paid. There was no control of the course and again slowed everything down. I would rather wait until they close and walk around free like everyone else if that’s the case. Upon finishing and arriving at the club house at 5pm, it was shut and no Reception, restaurant or Bar was upon. Surely that’s their bread and butter?. Such a shame as the club has potential for big things. Talks the talk on email newsletters but doesn’t walk the walk in reality.
Good little course for £15
Played here on a Saturday afternoon. As a council course expect a slow pace of play than a member course as there are hacker out there!
Good course design with a variety of holes, each with its own hazards.
Would play again at that price!
Cracking value for money
Played the course just after lunch on a weekday, and paid £15 for the round.
The greens were in great shape and the fairways were decent enough. At that time, there weren't many on the course, so the pace of play was fantastic. There's a nice balance of holes - a few hills, but nothing too strenuous, and the course was in good shape. The bunkers were a bit tatty in places, but for £15 it was an absolute steal.
Great course
Great course! Well looked after! Only thing i can suggest is that we had a 7am tee off time and the clubhouse doesnt open until 7, luckily a cleaner slipped me a scorecard through the door or we would have been late to our tee of time
Good course
A straight forward basic course that has all the basics a good course should have.
Saturday @ Little Hay
Booked a 6.52am tee for myself and impressed with how easy I was able to get going. No hold ups all day and course was generally in a good condition. £33 was steep for the course. It’s a public pay & play with OK greens, just very slow and due to early morning quite wet. Handy as less than 10 mins from home. Will book again.
Thunder and lightning
Only got to play 9 holes due to thunder and lightning. So had to come off the course and was told we’re not entitled to come back and play again or given a refund. Only course this has ever been the case, shocking customer service. Stay away from the course.
Good value public course
Have played Little Hay a few times, and I find it is always challenging. There are several long par 4's, but no water or steep hills. Hole 1 & 2 are next to the driving range so quite a few range balls on the course. It was quite busy with youngsters, but it is school holidays. And at the end the Club house has 1 reasonable real ale to celebrate (or commiserate!) the round.
Would recommend a round here to people.
Room for improvement
Range was pretty shabby and range balls old and tired. Fine for a quick warm up before a round but not great for serious practice. Mats worn down to threads and poor selection of rubber tees around.
Course was ok but I felt fairways a bit rough and long. Greens on our day we’re very slow and lot of worm damage and bird damage not being repaired. Nice enough layout though.
Frustrating experience
No one was there to sign in with at the starting tee time of 7am and in fact several golfers had just tee'd off. That meant there were no facilities open prior to starting the round.
The course was poorly kept, fairways looked more like rough, greens were long grassed on some and cut on others which lead to a very inconsistent experience on the greens which was frustrating.
