Magnificent Malkins
Having not played golf for a while I thought it best to go back to where I used to play, so off I went back to Malkins Bank GC. I enjoyed playing there before as it was a nice track with a variation of holes.
However, since I've been away the place has been transformed; the course is in great shape, the greens offer a quality surface to putt on with undulations that create a good fair test.
The fairways are also in great nick and wide enough not to be too imposing but must be respected because trouble can easily be found, especially if you get into the trees, of which there are quite a few. From memory the grass is now shorter under the trees so you can make good contact but you're in the woods so your hampered enough already!
There isn't masses of rough but when you do find it it's very difficult to locate your ball let alone play a shot so stay well clear, if you can..
Another major change is the order of holes, the 1st used to be a dead straight Par 4 which was quite a knee-knocker, especially as you could be being watched by any number of other golfers in close proximity, waiting to tee off. Now you start on what used to be the 10th, a nice cosy downhill Par 3 where you feel a little more tucked away when you tee off - a solid iron shot and your away.
As for length I guess it's on the shorter side, I don't know the UK average but, with the Par 4's ranging from 314 to 368 (off yellow) it's no push over. I suppose a very low handicapper with a 275+ yard killer drive in his/her armoury might want more of a test because a lot of the holes are quite straight. Most average golfers, playing off double figures, will enjoy the test of reaching the dancefloor.
The staff I spoke to at the club were very friendly, helpful and down to earth. I didn't catch any whiff of snobbery at Malkins Bank which is important to me. I'm certainly going to look at full membership.
As for the price, at £11 booked through Teeofftimes.co.uk it was an absolute bargain and I'll be going back for another round next week.

Would appreciate my money back for reservation fee as course was flooded
Mixed
It’s a good course nicely set out but now winter is here and with the rain we’ve had it’s quite boggy in a fair few places which Carnt be helped , they’ve just put the prices up and with how the course currently is you can get a round of golf in at various other courses on the golf now app cheaper , not the best time to put the prices up
I'll be back in the summer.
The first 7 holes had a small 30ft of area cleared around the flag, which meant if you played into that area you had a chance at a putt, however, from the 8th hole onwards there was no dew dispersal at all, making putting very difficult.
I was very surprised by this, as the course had a club competition starting 15 minutes after our tee time.
The course was also badly waterlogged in the back 9, with the 15th being quite the quagmire. It is this way every single year but nothing appears to be done about it. Woosie's Corner, more like Woosie's Keele.
Stick to the summer months, it's a great course then.
Terrible course
The course conditions were terrible with many soft areas and mud
Tree lined meant excessive leaves on greens and fairways fedultimg in lost balls in the middle of the fairway
Signposting was very poor and information on arrival very poor
Little wonder it’s only £10
Friendly staff, good pricing
Love playing this course, beginner golfer only been out 4 times but the staff are always friendly and it’s great fun. Could be improved slightly in various aspects but it could equally be twice the fee price so it’s swings and roundabouts
Good for the money
You know what your getting for the price. Very wet in places not surprising with the amount of rain we’ve had!
Great course. Lovely conditions. Greenkeepers are kind and friendly
Nice course and facilities.
I was returning to Malkins Bank having not played the course for 25 years and I was pleasantly surprised by how the course had matured, with the addition of tree lined fairways and a reversal of the holes (back nine now the front nine etc.). Just a couple of observations or improvements, the pace of play could have been better, there are 8 minutes between planned tee off times but a three ball jumped in the middle which increased waiting time significantly plus the greens were a little inconsistent varying from super quick to quite slow making this element of the game more challenging than usual.
Overall it was a great experience, the facilities are excellent and the course presents a decent challenge.
Great value for money
For £10 you get 100 balls on a range, we played a course . Some great holes and was it in perfect condition! No but for £10 it was the bargain of the year .
Clubhouse very friendly and food prices very good but don’t know how the food was as it was shutting as we finished .
My only moan is that course etiquette , even though has reduced over the years (for the good ) should still be followed.
I’m an avid believer that golf should be a sport for all but it still needs to keep a bit of dress code , shoes etc and not shouting from one side of the fairway to another .
Other than that can’t wait to come back for the price and try the bar and food out
No staff
I turned up at 7,10 hoping to buy some balls and tees but unfortunately the club shop never opened in time for my 7.30 Tee time, luckily there was a young lad there who’s first day it was working there and he called someone for me and they said to get some range balls which was very good of them but I still had no score card to show me the layout of the course so slightly disappointed
Worst course ever
Loads of Karen’s, the guy in the halfway house thinks he’s Rocky Balboa, the greens are like concrete, tee boxes have been battered, wouldn’t play here again for free
