The best it's ever been
We used to play here a lot in the old day (20 years or more ago). It was always ok but they've really improved the course conditions now, it's a pleasure the play at with good greens and many lovely laid out holes. The fairway grass was too long this time (my 2nd visit here since coming back to golf after a 20 year break), but I think the sudden hot weather after 3 weeks of rain had caught them off guard a little and they were out sorting that, so no big deal.
I'm actually thinking of joining, it has enough to keep me interested and every hole feels distinctly different.
This course has something for everyone
Excellent days golfing, course in very good condition and has something to challenge every type of golfer
Not looked after.
I played this course yesterday & was not impressed. With the virus break & the weather we have had the greens should be in a lot better condition. They were very rutted & looked like nobody repairs their pitch marks. The fairway weren't cut nicely either, neither the Tee boxes.
It's a very up & down course & not very undulating, just flat & boring. If you have the choice, I'd give it a miss.
Boggy but Buggies
Played 18 late morning, weather was fair but course was very wet in places from the frequent rainfall in the previous week.
The greens were in good condition, the tee boxes were average at best, with some temporary tees not even mown.
Unbelievably buggies we’re allowed on the course and had carved up some fairways.
The greens were mainly roped off to stop trolleys but why buggies were allowed out is baffling.
Malkins for an ex municipal course is on the whole very good with some challenging holes.
It can sometimes be slow especially at weekends, and 8 minute gaps between tee times isn’t enough in my opinion.
There was obviously an oversight allowing people to use buggies the day I played.
I’d recommend the club purely because it’s a good round of golf when the course is in good condition. And at roughly £15 a round at week-end value for money.
Love this course
Been coming to malkins now for 6 years for a tournament once a year with the lads. Having come last, last year I decided to do a pre tournament practice round with my dad this weekend.
As always well looked after from the staff in the club house, the bar and the half way house on hole 10 where we were gagging for a drink and a sausage role as it is was so hot! Challenging course (especially the front 5) loved every minute of it. Would highly recommend.
unloved, off fairway very poor, slow play.
it was about 5years since i last played here and i will not return soon.
Cancelled on arrival
Arrived 20 minutes before tee off to be told there was a golf competition on in the morning they did not inform golf now we had driven nearly an hour to get there to be turned away. Very poor
Some very good holes, strategic bunkers. And undulating fairways.
The course was in good condition after the seniors open today. Good course to play in Summer. Wet and mucky in winter. Excellent value. The starter was friendly and helpful. Pay your fees arrive on time and never a problem. It would be a great course with proper drainage. Cheers to all for good days golf. 16 handicap. 41 points. Patrick
Not at Its Best
Played here for the first time today and to be honest, was a little disappointed with the condition of the course and the general appearance of the place. The greens were not at their best and the fairways lacked definition in places, with many muddy patches instead of the grass you’d expect, even in February. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the clubhouse had a nice relaxed atmosphere. If the course improves over the coming weeks it is worth giving it a try this season, as there are some interesting holes.
A bit shambolic
Arrived to find booked tee time had been moved back for no apparent reason. Played first hole. At second hole there was some works going on and 4 groups were ahead of us playing the hole which meant about a half hour wait to play the hole. From then on it was still extremely slow as there was a seniors comp ahead of us. Message is to avoid getting stuck behind this comp and be aware of potential chaos at second hole.
Nice course
Nice course, it tends to be quite busy and you often tee off 10 mins late
Really good, decent golf.
The coarse is well maintained. Greens are in good condition. Yes there is ground under repair and a few things that perhaps need looking at. This is a good coarse. I played here 25 years ago. It was good then but is better now. They've added a few bunkers a pond and the trees are more mature. There are cleverly positioned fairway bunkers. The bunkers have soft sand. I have played it's of different golf coarse at varying prices. Malkins bank come into the brilliant value for money.
Great price
Really well kept course. Some interesting and challenging holes, especially on the back 9. Theres a driving range on site which charges a mere £1 for 20 balls which is great as a warm up before teeing off. Only 2 bad points was the amount of what look like areas under repair on the faiways on the first few holes, but i think they were some sort of air shafts? And secondly, we a a few other 2 balls got stuck behind a really slow 4 ball which was reluctant to allow anyone to play through.
Never again
One of the worst courses I have played.
Several areas of fairway were, or should have been GUR. The tees were scruffy and many of the bunkers had not been raked.
It took us (2 ball) 2H:20 mins to play 9 holes due to slow play ahead. When we got to the 10th tee, the starter had inserted another 4 ball group in front of us.
Having watched them all tee off (left, right, 150 yards), we decided to give up and go home. Didn't even bother having a drink, so can't comment on facilities
Definately won't be returning.
Weapons Of Grass Destruction
I have played this course for 18 years, I played on 21/06 for the first time there since the year before and wow just wow what a change. The grass is just dead on nearly every front 9 fairway and it’s bone hard underneath borderline unplayable from the fairways with an iron due to how hard it is, now I know it’s been dry and warm but I’ve played a lot of local courses and all are managing this well without issue so it’s not a weather thing affecting all places. The starter man is just the most miserable person I’ve encountered and I’m pretty bad but he puts me too shame. It really is a shame what’s happened at the course as it used to be lovely however my 4 ball all said the same that we would never return again, it’s quickly become a course all about taking money, getting as many on as possible and not caring beyond that point, no etiquette from people for playing through, no Marshall’s, no common sense, if it’s so busy alternate starts between the front and back 9 it’s not hard but the starter bloke is a big no to that UNLESS you’re a friend of his. Whole place has become a shambles and it’s a real shame, I would recommend not playing here and going to an alternative
good days golf
Always liked this course - I find it varied and great value. There again I ain't much good
Good round on hot day
really enjoyed the round, normally play this course in the winter or spring wet season so it was a pleasure to see the ball travel. Will definitely play again, some cracking holes.
