Blustery Autumn on a Great Layout

We’ve played Matfen many times, but rarely in late autumn. The 3 9s are all great layouts, offering their own challenges. Standing Stones is probably the toughest with the run from 5-8 being particularly hard, not helped by the howling gale we played in. The courses were in generally pretty good condition for the time of year. In common with most courses in this region underfoot was a bit muddy and as a result the fairways haven’t been cut as short as normal. The greens were really soft, but still fast and true, the only problem being all the tree detritus blown all over.
Off the course the pro shop is well stocked and the cafe serves a mighty fine bacon and sausage stottie!
Despite the challenging conditions we really enjoyed our round. The Hot Deal we got was absolutely outstanding value for money - you could easy pay 3x that amount and not feel robbed!

What a turnaround

I was a member of matfen 3 years ago but left due to the poor state of the course. This was my 1st time back playing and want a turnaround the course is in fantastic condition. Bunkers are full of sand and give you the confidence to fully commit to the shot. The only negative point I have is that the rough is beyond treturous if you go into the long stuff forget about finding it. Absolute pleasure going back for a round and it won't be a 3 year wait for my next round.

Not a good course when wet

Nice layout, greens good, etc. Main problem was the wet winter conditions. The grass was allowed to grow too long, probably due to it being wet. The rough was long and damp. Every shot was a mud ball. We gave ourselves preferred lies. I think this course will be excellent in summer and autumn but not in winter.

Poor fairways

Fairways were poor due to being very muddy. We haven’t had much rain so don’t know why the course was so heavy. Spoke to a couple of members who said the same and it’s the reason some haven’t renewed. The greens were excellent but £17.50 for 3 beers afterwards is ridiculous

Tee me up again...

Crisp, cool and damp, but what else would you expect in November... The course played extremely well, but long, and the greens were in great condition. Thoroughly enjoyable round of golf, finished with a hot buttie and coffee in the Keepers Lodge.

Old Favourite

Haven’t played here for years but good to see it’s still in great condition and you forget how good some of the holes are.

Terrible greens

Played yesterday and course was terrible, tee boxes as long grass and hadn’t been cut, greens were a disgrace but still got charged £45 each to play. Won’t be going back.

Good Course

I've played Matfen a few times and although we booked to play Dewlaw and Douglas courses on arrival we were advised it was Douglas and Standing Stone we'd be playing. It was a little disappointing as Standing Stone is a bit tough for my skill set. Needless to say the course was on really good condition and it was quiet so we were able to take it at a good pace. I still feel £35 is above average for a round of golf but I suppose you get what you pay for. Good Course and good round overall.
