Old Thorns, bring your wellies
Had the pleasure to play this course on a windy drizzly Thursday afternoon in Late October, on the first tee looking down the fairway all we could see was a very muddy fairway waiting perfectly at driving distance, the course was soaked all the way round & I do mean soaked, it nearly sucked one of my shoes of on one fairway ! However it remained playable and the greens and bunkers were great, the scenery and general setting of the course is a joy, just beautiful with a great mix of holes, in truth it shouldn’t have been open but it somehow did not detract from our enjoyment, we had a great game on a really beautiful golf course, you might want to wait until summer
Heard how great it was to play Old Thorns but ....
Booked this course a couple of weeks ago for 3 players to play. Arrived on time and we were on the practice putting green to hear another 3 ball saying they had a tee time of 11.20am which was the same as ours?! How could this be? One of them went to the pro shop to book and collect his buggy and ask about the double booking to be told 'play is running behind so just tee off after one another' - this was further compounded by a couple of players arriving for their 11.30am tee time. Nightmare but what could we do other than let the 3 ball play ahead of us as they had buggies and would be quicker then us on foot. Then on to the condition of the fairways - they were awful. Having to move your ball yards away to try and achieve a half decent life to strike your clubs. The fairways were covered in what appeared to be mud from the tee boxes and pretty much every fairway was the same. Awful conditions. The fairways had been 'shredded' it appears and were possibly being treated but the annoying thing is there was no mention on the website about this or any sort of reduction in the cost of playing. Please Please inform golfers about the course conditions. The greens were fantastic, beautifully cut, fast, receptive to good shots, etc. After the round we were well looked after in the sports bar for a couple of drinks and some food. Fantastic service and well controlled with the Covid19 restrictions. I felt safe and at no apparent risk so thank you and well done. Overall a great day with a couple of friends but let down with the fairways and the lack of information about this. I will call and ask about course conditions before returning in the future.
Great course
Torrential rain throughout meant the greens weren’t draining well but that wasn’t the fault of the course - on another day it would be impeccable
Couple of real signature holes lovely layout great value for money
So close.....
Whilst I only have compliments for the course we stopped at the sports bar for a bite to eat and from the limited menu (bearing in mind this a resort not just a golf club!) I selected a Tuna melt sandwich this arrived but on eating it discovered it had onions in it - I HATE onions. The waitress offered to replace it but said the 'chef' could not take out the onions as they came pre-mixed (not sure how they justify the £8 price tag...) so I said OK I would have the egg & cress only to be informed that came with chives , another form of onion. So I said no thank you. We were not offered a refund and so left feeling rather let down. So go play the golf, use their on site Starbucks but eat in Liphook!!
By far the most crowded course I've played on. Far too many people -we were one of THREE groups with a 15:30 tee time. We had to wait to play every tee shot or shot into the greens. It rather smacks of an attempt to get as much money from green fees as soon as possible and that rather overshadows the good points.
Beautiful course
Front 9 among best I’ve played, stunning views, greens in top condition and overall layout of holes was great. Many tight holes limiting use of driver making it interesting off the tee. Pace bit slow but lovey day so shouldn’t complain!
Really Disappointed
After arriving early we were greeted in the Pro Shop by a very helpful young lady who allowed us to tee off early.
Unfortunately, that is where the positives end. On arriving at the 1st tee and looking up the fairway, we discovered a picture that resembled a freshly ploughed potato field, as it had been scarified, using heavy machinery the day after 3 days of torrential rain has totally destroyed it and a few other fairways on the course, making them unplayable and I would think for sometime to come.
I fully understand course maintenance, but inform players before they book so you do not ruin the experience.
We noted greens maintenance in August, but recent reviews confirmed the greens are now in great condition...however there is no mention of scarifying on the course.
We had looked forward to playing Old Thorne as the course had previously been fantastic, a real shame we left feeling so disappointed on this occasion
Great course
Old Thorns is a fantastic layout and a challenging Championship course. The course is in excellent condition and the pace of play was perfect. Friendly and helpful staff made the experience even better. Would definitely recommend
Pace of play.
Great course, some stunning absolutely stunning holes. Superb greens. But all this is horribly let down by the pace of play. I played here a year ago and the pro shop and starter both warned it would be slow. It was that bad though we wouldn’t have got round in the light so decided to play the front nine twice. As did two other groups we got chatting to. This year, again we were warned of all the four balls out that we might catch up with them. The front nine was fine but playing the ninth you couple see the group in front waiting on the tenth tee and then it started. Waiting on every shot and got worse as the round went on. So bad that when teeing off on the lovely par three 16th we had the two groups behind watching and we could see the two groups in front on the 17th tee waiting the the group in front of them to tee off. They know this happens, they warn you at the start, but have no martials on the course to speed up play and are so money grabbing they cram too many people into a course that can not cope with it.
Give it a go!
An excellent course in great condition and really good value.
So much potential, unplayable greens
This SHOULD be a spectacular course; from the 3rd hole onwards each hole has a great layout or view. Unfortunately all but 1 of the greens are unplayable. Not due to maintenance. It looked like divots on the 1st green!
I played here 7 years ago & said I’d never go back. Do yourself a favour, play Petersfield instead...
Great course in awesome surroundings
What can I say, great course in pretty good condition for January
Would recommend to others for sure and already looking forward to a return trip in the summer when it’s no doubt in even better condition.
Tricky fast greens with lots of slope, elevation all over the place and a tough walk, buggy would have helped for sure
Great course
Challenging but fun
Some great views as an added bonus
Can’t wait to go back and play it again but will definitely hire a buggy next time
November at Old Thorns
Course starting to get soggy but perfectly playable. Greens were a little slow but true. The only moan really was that this was the 4th time I’ve played it and the 3rd time the range has been out of action. However at £15 a complete bargain.
Good course
Played here for the first time as part of a two night 2 round package booked through Golfbreaks. Course is very well laid out with some challenging holes and in a lot of cases position off the tee is more important than absolute length. Well done messers Alliss and Thomas.
Considering the time of year and the recent appalling wet weather the course was in good condition. There was some maintenance work ongoing but it has to be done some time and better in the winter than during the playing season.
WARNING - The walk between the second green and the thrid tee and also up to the fifteenth green is steep and requires some physical effort.
Overall definitiely recommend and my wife and I look forward to returning during the sumer months.
Old thorns
Pro shop assistant excellent. Older Pro bit of a grumpy old so and so. Course wasn't in the best condition. Hollow tuning had taken place but the fairways where in a bad way, lots of GUR bunkers left unraked by selfish golfers. Divots the same. This is an excellent course but sadly the number of hotel guests who are playing who don't observe golf etiquette and rules is on the rise. Slow play is standard and there isn't much that is done about it. Course starter doesn't do much either other than repeat what he says to each group playing.
This could be a fantastic place but needs a lot of TLC and cash spent on it.
Amazing course, a must for anyone. It was pretty wet, but giving the time of year and amount of rain. Can't stand people that slate courses in the winter will be returning here for sure in the summer, true gem
Elevated tee shots, great views, true test of golf.
