Tricky with stunning views
Little hidden gem of a course. Beautiful setting and lots of variety over the course. Be prepared for some hill climbing however you won’t be disappointed when you see the stunning 360 degree views at the top of Painswick Beacon.
Painswick Course
Not every course new to be long to be a challenge .
This little one offert a test to beginner and experts.
It has some blind shots, blind green location and mixture of flat and hill.
One of the holes has a view 360 dgrees of the County down on your feet.
I will be back because the member made me feel welcome.
Challenging terrain
The course info states that the views are magnificent, and this really cannot be denied - wonderful vistas across miles of countryside from the top of the world!
Playing the course is somewhat of a challenge with steep terrain, nary a flat area anywhere, multiple blind drives (although markers show the suggested line to take), very slow greens, uncompromising rough and not one, but two shortish par threes requiring a quality shot to clear steep ridges to a green hidden behind. High handicappers and short or low hitters will find these holes almost impossible. On top of that we struggled to find the next tee on
It was a significant physical challenge just to get around the 18 holes. Hats off to the members for their strength and perseverance. - and a good supply of spare balls. There is also an element of danger - it's an 'out and back' course with shared fairways in each direction, so avoiding players coming the other way requires much care. Not only that, but there were hordes of walkers wandering around the footpaths across and alongside the course with no thought for the golfers - we were delayed several times waiting for them to move on or away. from the line of play.
Having said all this, I'd recommend it simply to say that one has played it; a bit like climbing Everest, K2 or Kilimanjaro. - an achievement, but not something many people do twice.
Pro was pretty friendly and helpful. We were desperate for a drink when we finished but the clubrooms were closed late afternoon, so we had to find a local pub.
Would I play it again? Highly unlikely - it's the kind of course that you have to play four or five times before you work out where to hit the ball to score well. And too many three-putts - you really have to bash the ball at the hole; the greens definitely need a good heavy roller, but we could see that it would be difficult to access more than half of them with such equipment.
Stunning views though......
Great fun and value for money
Course looked great and the greens were in good nick. Played a few times before. Getting the hang of it now and the best lines to the green. It’s got a links feel to many of the holes. Perfect preparation for watching the final day of the open afterward.
Beautiful
Fun, interesting, challenging & scenic. Wildlife & wildflowers in abundance.
Stunning course
Beautiful course and outstanding value for money
Great views
Friendly staff, course a bit dry but normal in this time of the year. We enjoyed the course except for the fact of many cyclists and walkers around the course . Dangerous couple of shots over a transit road, not great if you hit a car passing by. Otherwise nice walk over the hills.
Memorable layout
This has to be one of the more idiosyncratic courses around and, consequently very enjoyable. Very hilly and relatively short with fine views, the stony ground makes it more sensible to carry clubs.
Lots of interaction with local walkers- the Cotswolds Way runs right through the course so care is needed.
Greens were in poor shape alas and the clubhouse closes early. On line booking at short notice was very welcome.
Overall great fun.
Short but challenge course
I a course that although is short is challenge by the way is layout.
Some blind holes whith rocks and hard ground.
Trees and long rough. I will come back. Mainly for the friendly people on the clubhouse
and the members
Easiest course in uk think again
Played in not the best weather and ground under foot very wet pretty windy so ball not flying as far as you would expect which made club choice problematic. Greens very small another course defence. Finished the course with a big smile on my face and fewer balls in my bag. Would play again in the summer.
Great
Great course, I just wish my golf played as easily as the course slope rating!
Unique is an understatement
Great veiws, a stiff walk, every hole a challenge….don’t be fooled by its short length you’ll have an opportunity to use every club in the bag……..just be aware of many walkers
Painswick
Genuinely one of the worst experiences I have ever had playing golf. I have played link courses before but this one was exceptionally busy with the public. Almost every single hole I was held up by dog walkers and families walking across the course preventing me from taking my tee shot. The winter mats are poor not being flat and having poor capability to place a tee down. The fairways were lacking grass and pretty much mud with holes throughout the ground, where there wasn’t mud there are fairways that have more thistle and stones than grass. I would guess this has little to no maintenance from playing here and it feels like someone has made a green and tee box and not worried about what’s in between. Prior to booking I thought £16 was a bargain but I wouldn’t play here again for free. Ended up stuck behind a group of four who didn’t allow playing through so left before we even finished the course, though I understand this was not the venues fault From the other golfers.
Good round of golf in sunshine
A good day for a round of golf and Painswick made the ideal setting
