Lovely day interesting course
Well worth a visit, challenging and querky. Lovely views at the top
Mixed bag
On arrival the place looked closed which it was so no staff to speak to and to find out what's what on the course. The course condition was good considering time of year the lay out is tight and a lot of criss-crossing fairways but unique in its own little way, the biggest problem is the walker not giving a crap about you standing on the tee off ready to go and just start walking towards or across the fairways where you're trying to land your ball, which made me give up after 11 holes, wouldn't recommend due to walkers everywhere.
Decent but slow, unique course
Odd course, full of public walkers not ideal! Very slow pace of play, holes can be difficult to navigate but some good challenges
Great little course
Idyllic views across to Wales and some very interesting holes makes this a good course to play. The course is shorter than most but you have to plan your shots. Some of the holes are picture postcard good as you play across an Iron Age fort.
Clubhouse warm and inviting with nice menu.
Bad
Course was in terrible condition. Hole 3 didn’t even have a green to putt on as it was closed off so the club decided to stick a flag in the middle of the fairway? Me and my friend decided to skip that hole. Pedestrian right away is fairly normal on any course where the general public can walk onto it which is fine but, we weren’t told the whole of the uk we’re going to be walking around the course onto the fairway not moving whatsoever. I think on average we were waiting 10 minutes on each hole for it to be clear. When you get past hole 4 your then sharing the fairways which would be fine if the other golfers playing the course actually had any golf etiquette very disappointing as I nearly got hit multiple times without hearing a shout from anyone. We only played 8 holes due to how terrible this course is. As we were heading back to the club house we had multiple golfers actually swear at us and saying we were ‘rubbish’ and couldn’t play there course lol which made me giggle considering me and friend play at a top level club unlike the players at painswick. Maybe it was an off day for painswick but, from reading other comments I don’t think it was unfortunately. This course should be free to play and if you want to make a donation you can. Extremely disappointed. The only positive is how nice the bloke was in the clubhouse
Fantastic little course
Painswick is one of those little gems you need to have in your list. Although it is a relatively short cse it will test your game. Some of the holes even in the winter are great photo opportunities. The par 3/4 holes are challenging and you need to think about what club and shot to play. I will definitely be heading back in early May as recommended by the Club captain who kindly assisted me through the back nine with some sage advice.
Brilliant course
Played in thick fog so made the already hard course harder but it was in excellent condition, the greens are superb and was a great round as usual
Don't let the scorecard deceive you..!!
Played on a brisk and chilly December day, with the odd shower and plenty of blustery wind, which made the course even more fun yet challenging.
To be treading over the historic geography of a bronze age fort and paying golf on it is quite an experience. Very hilly and some challenging access paths between holes, so it's a tiring yet rewarding round. The abundance of par three holes may give the impression of an easy course. It certainly isn't as undulations, unsighted tee shots and tricky greens make for a really testing round. But fun and achievable as our four ball of average golfers proved.
The clubhouse was very friendly and seems pleased to have visitors, as was the pro shop. Would definitely recommend and great value for the 18 holes.
Remarkable Course
Very challenging and very good fun. Lots of blind drives and challenging tee positions but wonderful interesting holes built amongst the iron age hill fort.
Greens are mature, fast and consistent. Plays short but requires straight driving.
Will come back soon. Vety reasonable green fees.
Staff could not have been more welcoming.
Club house facilities and food first rate.
A course once played, never forgotten.
Bad experience
Never have I played on such an awful course.Signposting to next tee non-existing. Loose probably 2-3 balls a month, lost 5 today. . Ridiculously greens hidden - no chance of seeing where the ball lands.
Then hordes of walkers, usually with their dogs running on the greens. Had to wait a good 20 minutes to get a clear path. In all it was an experience not to be tried again
Just too slow .....
As others have posted, its just too slow to enjoy. Clearly course management is poor as tee times slip and appears over booked at times, meaning we had 5 groups playing holes 4 and 5 - long delays to every shot and members not concerned about their pace of play and hanging about on tees chatting.
Great course though, some really nice holes , great layout and greens in great condition - manage the tee time better and it would be well worth playing again. Some tough holes, not long but needs accuracy
Enjoy the challenge
We chose to play Painswick because we had read that it was quirky and posed interesting challenges. We were not disappointed. The course makes full use of the terrain, rising to its highest point where the 360 degree panorama is exceptional.
We were warned that maintenance week on the greens had recently taken place and we found them slow but playable.
More of a challenge was the number of dog walkers, some of whom completely ignore the fact that there are golfers around.
Buggies would not be suitable on the rugged, and in some places, narrow paths.
More signage for the first time user would be useful. Several times we missed the location of the red tees.
All in all if you are in the area do play it. You won’t forget it quickly. It is also extremely good value for money.
Challenging game of golf
This course is defiantly not for the faint hearted, you need a lot of stamina on this seemingly constant up-hill course. Well worth it hopefully we will play the course again when we are in the area. This is a must play course.
Got to play here
Played here earlier with my wife. Course in good condition despite a few small areas being protected on a few greens.
Our problem was lack of signage to ladies tees on the 5th and 11th. My wife had paid the same price so deserved the same information.
This didn’t spoil a great afternoon on the course and we received a warm welcome in the clubhouse.
Excellent chalkenge
Th it s course is very rugged and hilly snd not for the faint hearted but is a great challenge. Really unusual holes snd lots of challenging lies on the fairways but really enjoyed this.
The o ly issues were a lack of signage to the tees and as lots of holes and fairways cross over or share fairways it made it difficult to comprehend for a first timer. Also, the walkways between holes were very rocky and barrow and difficult to get trolleys over.
Overall though a great golf venue and the views are spectacular!

What great fun this layout proved to be. Everyone should play this unique course once in their life. I am glad I did.
Bar Service
Bar service was mediocre, staff were less than welcoming. Had to wait 15 mins for 3 drinks even though there were very few customers, when drinks arrived the Carling larger was warm and while it was promptly replaced it was still warm.
