You get a little bit of everything, good, bad, and ugly
Good: natural setting, some soft ground to hit from, left movement, right movement, blind shots, water in play, firm, fast greens, value priced. Bad: rough was pretty tall, hit my ball off the fairway a few times, not out of bounds, but couldn't find it. We found alot of other balls for the same reason. Was playing with yellow balls, some of the fairways were rock hard, some of the fringes and greens need work. Ugly: some fallen trees are in the way and need to be cleared, some of the greens have bare spots, or that bad weed that grows on them. And to be honest my game was pretty ugly too. Course has alot of personality, club selection is a must.
The course id in terrible shape!
Tee boxes are hard as concrete...the fairways are dry and in horrific shape and the greens although had grass on them they were hard as well. WILL NOT SPEND ANOTHER DIME OF MY MONEY PERIOD at this golf course. What a shame to...used to be one of my favorites.
This course has a good value for the dollar.
Play in 3.4 hours and enjoy the country side while you play golf with a friend.
Very Reliable Experience
I have been playing this course for over 25 years. The course is always in pretty good shape and the staff is typically very friendly. I played my first round there on Christmas Eve in about 1983. It has always been a fun place to play. There is enough of a challenge and length to keep in interesting without it being totally unreachable. 4 sets of tees helps it play tougher for the better player. The deal could not be beat. Thanks for a good birthday afternoon!
Tough Tract
Tough course, super fast greens. Considering how dry fairways were ok. Well worth the price
lots of trees and wild life very sereal love it
for the price it was worth the drive not overly crowded greens roll great fairways were mowed roughs are rough. challenging yet playable for all skill levels
Nice layout
Had a fun day, friendly staff, super value, nice layout, pace of play was not a factor, no pressure, smooth flow.
Great layout, peaceful surroundings
This course is a hidden gem. It's only about 30 minutes from The Woodlands, so you would think there would be higher traffic here, but there's not. From what I understand, there is a new owner and management company that is slowly but surely putting some money into this great layout. You will never have to wait at a tee box or anywhere on the golf course for that matter, even on a weekend. If you like feeling like your the only group on the course and a challenging layout thats a little rough around the edges, then this is the course for you. Playing tomorrow and hopefully all the rain we have had has greened and softened this normally dry and firm course.
Incredibly well designed using the terrain features in the area. They are trying but without money it can't be maintained.
Could be one of the entire areas best courses. Far better design than any course in South Texas to include Redstone. If it were in the same condition as Redstone they could easily get $200 per round. However they are not able to maintain it without a major capital infusion. That probably won't happen.
Course needs water and rain
I love the layout. The course plays fair. The greens are in reasonable shape but the rest of the course is dry dry dry. Every swing on the fairway creates a dust cloud.
The management is great
Texas National has been on a rebound since they were so neglected for a long time. At this time, maybe they don't have all the amenities that bigger courses do but it won't be long before they can boast about the course again. They have a nice pro shop, friendly staff in the grill and the manager actually cares about the course and the personel working there. This course is challenging and the manager knows it, so don't worry about a Marshall bugging you to move on, this doesn't mean you can campout on a tee but you can learn while you play.
The layout is very nice, the condition of the course leaves much to be desired.
The layout of Texas National is fair but challenging. The fairways need work as do many of the greens. I continue to play here because I'd like to see these issues resolved and see the course become more golfer friendly.
Even for 20 bucks... not worth the money.
I was overly excited about playing at this course until I started playing.
The gentleman that helped me was indeed a great person that helped me with a little silly situation where I scheduled my tee time for the wrong day and he still let me play on Saturday. Well, that is neither here nor there.
Anywho. I was really looking forward to playing, but once I started, I was very disappointed in the course management. The tee box markers were small wooden branches with a 1.5 or 2 inch diameter and a majority of them were placed in tall grass making them very difficult to find.
I also use an app on my iPhone called "golfshot" that gives me the current distance to many different points on a specific hole; well, the tee box distance on the card was off between 5-10 yards on just about every hole.
The edges of the fairways were difficult to identify because they had obviously not been mowed in a week or so.
Overall, this was a disappointing visit that I do not mind passing up. They really need to step their game up!
Great Course!
Had fun, good value for great golf. Par 3's ++++++
Course is somewhat challanging. Layout is great.
Course has ample supply of water and sandtraps. Plenty of woods if you don't stay in the fairway. Pease and quiet a distinct plus on this course.
Good place with some drawbacks
Nice course layout with some interesting slopes. People are friendly. If only greens would be in better shape we would come here more often.
good layout
good course the greens look bad but they rolled ok. lack of rain from last year still has course recovering. great price and very nice staff made it very enjoyable.
Very good course
Played behind a slow group. It took over 4 hours to play. However, a great value for the money. Will play again.
Needs work, lots of bare earth
No room to miss the fairway. Ball will be in the woods.
Greens were extremely fast, but bumpy. You're often putting over bare earth.
You have to hit into some hidden hazard situations.
Reasonably good driving range.
All that said, I've played much worse. It's close to a good course, but not quite.
Great Layout, Good Price for course, Greens will come around
Played there several times - Enjoy it each time.
Great Layout, Easy enough & fun for everyone and good mix of tees.
Good value for quility of course.
Greens dorment during winter (with Poa Anna grass/clumbs during late winter/early spring - it's a problem but should be gone soon).
Fairways thin grass during late winter play (cart traffic).
But to be expected - it's not a $100 day course.
