Didn't play Wellington as was waterlogged and no one told us before our arrival so got put on Waterloo course with all others that had booked Wellington as well as people that booke Waterloo and ended up with 2groups all on the same tee time every slot.
Improving but still overpriced!
I have played here multiple times now and have to say the course is certainly improving. When I recently played they’d just completed necessary green keeping work which meant the greens were a little Sandy/Bobbly and some of the fairways were a little off however it’s still a very well kept course.
I have to admit. Booking through GolfNow you pay £46 a round at the weekend which is a little steep when comparing this to similar courses. I’m hoping they get the price point right in the coming months. especially as we move into winter as from experience this course struggles with drainage and get very muddy in the wetter months. I certainly won’t be forking out £46 then.
Fantastic Greens
very slow to start with Marshall told 4
ball to let us through after that it was much better
Wonderful round!
I’ve played here a few times before and the course was definitely in the best condition I’ve ever seen it. The greens were running fast and true and long grass in the rough made the course a great challenge. After playing here I would definitely consider a membership.
The clubhouse is also very good, serving nice cold beer and foods.
I’ll be trying the Waterloo course next.
After Lockdown Disappointment!! *Fairways* 6th Dec.
Huge disappointment. The greens we’r the only credible part of the round.
But I’m only writing this review to highlight how poor the fairways are at the moment.. They were a CONSTANT battle, without a doubt effected the round and I’d say closer to playing off a Sludgy Sunday league football pitch!! Poor effort.
I completely understand it’s winter, but considering all courses have closed due to lockdown they should be far better prepped for golf to return.
Not good guys! Prices should be discounted until sorted.. unfortunate but fair.
*I’ve tried to attach an image on my ball laying shamefully in the centre of a fairway, but doesn’t seem to work*
Pace of play ridiculously slow. Conditions not suitable for golf
Where to start. Cause conditions resembled farmers muddy field and NOT a golf course. Pace of play ridiculously slow due ladies 4 ball who had no concept of acceptable pace of play and etiquette .
Waited every short (along with approx 16 golfers in groups behind) until they walked off on after tenth hole have taken 3 and a half hours to play ten holes. Course marshals did nothing to move them on despite the that they were nearly 2 holes behind the group in front.
This course should have been closed.
Next time I will go to the nearest farmers plowed field and hit some balls instead of wasting money on this course.
I will not be back and if I was you I would GO SOMEWHERE ELSE instead
Windy and wet golf
Played here as a 4 ball on a Saturday in late October. Considering it was a Saturday it was relatively quiet, didn’t catch anyone in front until the 15th and no one held up behind either. It was a wet and windy day but the course was in good condition and not any standing water. Greens were still well paced and in great condition.
We played the parkland wellington course which is fairly forgiving. Lush thick grass lines the fairway so a few lost balls were had when you would have thought it would have been possible to find.
Overall a nice course which wasn’t particularly spoilt by bad weather and tricky conditions.
Course in poor condition on the fairways where very little attention has been given to drainage, probably due to overplaying. Greens ok but very slow, some like putting through cotton wool. Pro shop not open so check in through the bar where no one seemed to be in a hurry, too busy chatting with each other
Friendly staff shame about the course condition
Having played both courses at Sherfield Oak over the past 10yrs, but not since 2019, my business partner & I decided to play the longer of the 2 courses as we could not get on our preferred Basingstoke course (Weybrook Park)
On arrival the staff were friendly as I checked us in, but things went downhill very quickly from there.
The state of the tee box on the first was unfortunately a sign of what lay ahead on the course; it was like taking a tee shot from the first cut of rough but with large divots where the grass had not been cut.
Onto the fairways; to be honest we were actually hoping on most occasions that our balls found the first cut of rough as at least there would hopefully be some grass under our ball!.
The fairways were like a patchy cow field with more bare patches of dirt/mud covered with a sprinkling of grass seed than any golf course I have played, we even agreed on preferred lies, but due to the sparseness of grass even that didn't really help.
The greens were in much better condition (although not difficult) & at least had a healthy covering of grass, but these were very slow as they had not been cut & were more like some course fairways than greens. However the fringe of the greens were in a similar state to the fairways, making it impossible to putt from off the green (even 6" off) yet equally difficult to chip on due to the lack of grass & overall poor condition.
We could also see parts of the Waterloo Course from some of the holes & it seemed to be in equally poor overall condition.
While £25 per person (+booking fee) is not a huge amount of money for a round of golf, it would be difficult to justify even £10 per person due to the state of the course.
Needless to say we will not be rushing back to Sherfield Oak anytime soon!
Cracking course given the conditions
With the weather being very hot and with no sight of rain, we were expecting firm ground. Whilst the firm ground can’t be avoided, It was spectacular to see how amazing the greens were kept! Honestly, some of the best surfaces I’ve played on for a while and had plenty of character to give you a challenge.
The course is very interesting, fairway bunkers and tight fairways make for a tough outing.
The only dampener on the afternoon was the slow play. With evenings being shorter it’s important for some pace of play if we can get round in an after work round before dark. A couple of parties obviously didn’t mind playing in the dark, but it was a fairly frustrating note to what was an overall pleasurable experience.
Pleasantly surprised
Took a chance after reading some dodgy reviews about the state of the greens. Was really pleased to find the course in great condition and the greens were in good nick. Mature course and a really nice layout with heavy rough in places meaning you’ve got to drive it reasonably straight. Well worth 35 quid. Would definitely play here again
Great course and greens 90% recovered
The Wellington is a lovely challenging course and the fairways are in very good condition. The greens recently suffered a disease which madecthem very pitted and bobbly, however they are now 90%+ recovered and generally very good again. Staff are very friendly and a good bar serving drinks and good quality food. Definitely recommend.
Greens are diseased
The course is lovely, however the greens are awful currently due to a disease. Recovering slowly.
Good course with excellent greens
I have played this course a number of times in recent months and despite the very hot summer the course has been maintained in very good condition. In particular the greens play very well and are consistent throughout which is very welcome. I would recommend. Staff are friendly and the facilities are very good. For fifteen pounds through teeofftimes this is great value.
