Lyman Orchards in Middlefield is a favorite spot for families because of the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit, but it's popular with golfers as well, boasting both a Robert Trent Jones-designed course and one designed by Gary Player. There is also the Apple Nine Course. Situated along the banks of the Connecticut River, the orchards provide the perfect setting for a round of golf. The Jones Course has a diverse terrain, offering dramatically rolling hills on the front nine and a back nine that is routed through woodlands and wetlands. Water comes into play on a total of seven holes on the back and there are more than 40 bunkers strategically placed along the severely sloped greens. Accurate drives and irons will be generously rewarded but it's not overly punishing for high handicappers.

To play. Early season, obviously have to punch. However, you shouldn’t pay 50$ for it.

Fairways in great shape.

Greens not so much. We’re recently punched and still holes and a lot of sand. Some putts bounced 6” off ground.

price should have been less considering shape of greens.

I have played this course for many years. It is a great design and challenging layout. I have over the years never been wowed by the green's pace and or smoothness and it's a shame. they are in decent shape and I'm not here to bash the course but that's what I see when I play here. I know it gets many rounds and the greens pay the price. I will play here again because I really like the course.

I was disappointed at the bunkers today on the front 9 that I played. Literally a 1/2 an inch of sand over hard clay. I was using a 60 degree wedge with little bounce and was ard pressed to get it under the ball effectively. These greens were all re done a number of years ago as I recall and to see this quick of a decay is terrible for all the money I'm sure they spent. They should be a strong point of the course.

Took 3 hours to do 9 holes but even after complaining about the slow group ahead of us at the turn, we never saw the ranger. I actually quit playing after the 12th hole. Wasted my money and just had an aggravating round.

This course was very well maintained but somewhat wet due to recent rain which made for slow greens. It was pretty busy the day we went but my friend and I got teamed up with two very nice gentlemen. Groups playing ahead and behind us were very respectful. The course is a bit narrow but did not have leaves covering the fairways which is difficult this time of year. I would definitely play here again.

Played on 10/10. Rough was very high, but that happens sometimes on Mondays. They were trying to mow but it was wet from heavy Sunday rain. Cart part only was tough, made searching for balls and bringing clubs difficult. I liked the layout, it was fair if you hit it straight, and a lot of green side bunkers. Bunkers were packed hard from the rain too. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

Won't be playing here again, no matter how beautiful the courses are.

The rangers like to shame players into playing faster, instead of being courteous and actually helping. Had a ranger tell us we were playing too slow, when we had already closed a 2 hole gap into a one hole gap by the 5th hole. Perhaps if there is a 2 hole gap in front of a foursome going out, you would at least let them hit their second shot before sending off the next four behind them. 4 guys played the front nine in less than 2 hours, not sure how that is considered slow play, especially on a day that was 90+ degrees with high humidity. Then he sat on the tee box at ten, insulted us, drove away shaking his head after he caused us to hit 4 bad shots while he sat there glaring at us with his arms folded across his chest, like we were a group of children. We went to 11 and waited for the group in front of us to tee off. Again, not sure how this is considered slow play.

Also, the golf pro won't return your phone calls when you call to tell him how bad your experience was, so there's that. Guess they don't care about player experiences, only collecting greens fees. The rangers are a direct reflection of the course pro, I believe his name is Mr Valk, but I don't know for sure because he wouldn't call me back.

This is supposed to be a gentleman's game. Not so at Lyman Orchards Golf Club based on my experience.

Oh, and I asked when I was paying for the round if they sold cigars, was told no. Grabbing a soda afterwards, saw them for sale about twenty feet from where I was told 'no, we don't sell cigars'.

The course was great! They had an outing in the morning, a friend and I got there to play in the afternoon and when we booked there were a lot of open tee times, and as we drove up there wasn't a lot of people there (mostly due to the outing.) The first 9 flew by, we're late 20's guys, mid handicappers, so we were done in about an hour and 45 minutes.

There was a ranger circling who should have been aware of our scorching pace, however this did not stop them from putting out a threesome and a twosome of ladies who couldn't reach a par 3 with a driver on 10! This was extremely frustrating. Just start them off of 1! Why do you throw them out on 10? Our 3-3.5 hour round quickly turned into a 5 hour round. Kind of a bummer. the course was sweet, liked everything about it, I just hated that decision from the clubhouse.

Let me start by saying, I LOVE this course. I've played it 500+ times. I learned to play golf on this course. The last time I played it was about 7 or 8 years ago. After that round I swore I wouldn't play it again. But I did. A couple weeks ago, I decided to give it another try to see if my frustration from 7 years ago would repeat. It did.

Here's my frustration....

The course Ranger insists on bothering the golfers about keeping up with Lyman's rate of play policy.

Hey, if I'm holding up the group behind me, then you can say something. But if I've got 1to 2 holes open behind me --- leave me alone and let me enjoy my round.

I WILL NEVER play this course again!!

And that's a real shame because I really love the course. The course itself was in great shape. But I won't go back because I don't want to be harassed when I'm trying to enjoy myself.

Played with a friend. Starter matched us with a third. After two holes a single arrived we asked him to join but he wanted to play through. We let him go. Caught him on the back nine because a foursome would not let him through. Lyman can do a better job with this.

Greens were very good. Semi-fast and true. But one worker was pumping air into the greens to soften them and another was two holes away rolling them. What?

Traps were below average, basically hard red dirt/sand and rocks. Tees and fairways fine. The course is a challenge. Food was very good after the round.
