Reviews
An enjoyable walk in the East end but not a straight forward layout. The nature of old courses in London which are short of space. Greens in good condition and ran true esp after the dew had lifted. Tee boxes on the back side of the course in need of work. Pro very helpful.
Challenging and fun!
Fun course. The holes are closely packed alongside each other with little forgiveness for errant drives.
Short but tight
Old, well established course. Front nine holes tougher than the back, but the back 9 are way more interesting. Holes 2-5 are in “the field” and I think are recent additions to the original course. They consist of four par 4’s running alongside each other. I would call the rest of the course “quirky” with some tee shots requiring a close eye on other players if the course.
Good things come in small packages
Second time I've played here and on both occasions I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The course is short in length with only one par five, but please don't let that put you off. The layout is different with the second, third, forth and fifth, a little walk away as others have mentioned. For me, the walk is worth it! Many of the members choose not play these holes preferring to play the sixth after the first. The fairways are narrow-ish but forgiving, the rough was a good length and you definitely know when your in it. The course is very well maintained, and the greens were in excellent condition on both visits. There was a couple of pitch marks on a few greens but that was due to lazy ignorant people not repairing their marks, members? Visitors? Who knows? The par threes all offer something different, one an elevated tee to a two tiered green, one is over a pond if your brave enough?
Both days I've played the weather has been pretty good so a few people have been out on the course, I was also in no rush so in no way felt held up by players in front of me.
The members, greenkeepers and Pro's I've met have been really welcoming and seem proud of their club and course, they were out in force today clearing leaves, sticks and branches from the course. At this time of year many a leaf looks like your ball on the ground, unless you choose to use something other than white or yellow.
All in all this is a really well maintained course that is fairly priced for being so close to London. I urge you to go play it!
Nice pleasant course
Very nice well maintained course squeezed into two parts of land with a quirky 4 holes section separate from the rest of the course.
We played 7.30am with no one around... not even pro shop, so no scorecard available which kept the overall scoring to the bar after as we had no idea of stroke indexes as they had been removed from tee yardages.
overall we enjoyed the round... with some lovely holes and a lake that magically appears when you reach the TOP of a hill.
Many thanks.
The course was very well maintained,
greens nice and true. Not the longest of courses but a good tee shot is required to get you on the green.Members were friendly and was the Pro in the shop.Would definitely recommend this too play.I will be back.
Good value, enjoyable golf course
Had a very pleasant round here. Course was in good condition; greens are slowish but very true, bunkers in good nick. It was very slow but this was due to a society of irregular golfers on the course, I understand that it is normally better.
Course is mainly short but narrow, challenging par-4s combined with long and difficult par 3s. Could have done with more par 5s (there is only one).
Given quality of the course, excellent value for money. Will definitely return and recommend it to friends.
Established course
The warm welcome from the pro kicked off this round well , he was very friendly and helpful. We picked a bad weather day as it was cool and windy but the course was very quiet.
This course is an old established one and no the longest but some tough par 4's ,1 par 5 and 4 par 3's. greens are consistent. With a few on a separate piece of land , 150 yard walk from the 1st green
Would play again .
Lovely course in a lovely part of London
Very nice clubhouse with very good amenities. Gentleman in pro shop was very welcoming and filled us in on any need to know info. Course was challenging but not too complex. Some lovely tee positions and greens were in lovely condition with some good tight tee positions. Only thing which was a tad annoying was there was a couple of blind tee shots where a post down the fairway wouldve helped. Definitely will play this course again
Nice course
Really enjoyed this course. Friendly welcome in the club pro shop then a great round. Course quite empty so round in 3 hours. Course in good condition a greens very true and fast. Course layout Is mixed. There are a few quite samey par 4s but the par 3s are all excellent and there isn't much rough. The fact I had a great round with 4 birdies obviously has nothing to do with the review:)
Finally
I've been looking for a good course close to home and found it here at Wanstead. Not a long course so advise playing off the back tees especially if it's dry. Some great holes with elevated greens. Greens were true and well kept. One or two cross over holes and 4 holes separate to the rest of the course. I paid £22 and was definitely worth more. Buy a course stroke saver, some places you don't want to miss!
Disgraceful members
Course was very nice, however we arrived to have to park in a nearby street as the "guest" car park was full
turns out there was a pro am event on (not advised of this when booking)
took 5 hours for 4 of us to get round constantly being held up by the pros
then a bunch of members decided to have a go at us for holding them up when we waiting on a par 3 because the pro's had just finished and were teeing off.. were told that we should just hit the ball and shout fore if it goes near them.. I was always taught to wait until the tee was clear if it was just to the side of the green to avoid hurting someone
not like we could be holding them up either considering we were on the heels of the group ahead
