A Safari Club Favorite
Great Track! Great Condition! Great Greens! Great View's! Great Food! You get the idea GO PLAY YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
Great Track
Recently played the course with the Safari Club and was not disappointed. Great layout, challenging and yet fair holes for all levels of golfers. Exceptional condition from Tee to green and a great staff. Don't pass up the course if you are in the area
Played with the Safari Club. Course was in excellent condition and staff couldn't have been more accommodating (someone even came by to offer us water and soda while playing!!) Food after was great. All and all a perfect day with exception of heat!! Definitely hoping to get back there before end of season. It is a GEM for the price!!!

Just Boring
I find Topstone to be slog that produces no memorable holes that really stand out. The conditions are always good and the greens fair, if fairly flat. It just that besides #9 none of the holes capture my imagination or respect. I'm talking about a lot of down and back holes that are all fairly straight with uninteresting bunkers. It's not horrible, it's just not memorable. The price is also out of whack for what you are getting. It's really no better than any other muni in the area.
Won a free four sum
Won a four sum and carts from the Safari club. This is a very nice course. The Safari club plays here once a year. The conditions are perfect . And the staff was very nice. Can't wait to play here again.
Beautiful Place
Maybe the most beautiful course I have played all year with the Safari Golf Club. Immaculate conditions, the best cart path anywhere, fast true rolling greens, a good challenge without being overwhelmingly difficult.
After a very enjoyable round of golf we had a great cookout buffet.
We've already made plans to return in a foursome or two early this fall.
Beautiful layout
Elevated greens surrounded by bunkers made this course both fun and challenging. Fairways well maintained and food at 19th hole delicious and plentiful. Lots of golf for the money. Played there with The Safari Club.
Great Course
Played this on 9/28 with the Safari Club. What an enjoyable experience! From the time we arrived, the staff treated us extremely well and took care of all of our needs. The course was a pleasure to play. The tee boxes, fairways, rough and greens were all in excellent condition, and the day was capped off with a great barbecue buffet. Highly recommend this course.
Top score for Topstone
This course was a late addition to the Safari Club's already jam packed and incredible 2016 season lineup. It was chosen as a replacement to another course in which management there had difficulty in understanding they needed to be better listeners than verbal provocateurs. But what an incredibly fortuitous the decision to drive down the road another 20 miles turned out to be!
This golf course offers everything and more to those that truly enjoy the game of golf. The staff represents a perfect match for this perfect golf course destination. They were all friendly, respectful and extremely helpful in meeting our needs. They gave us all that private golf course experience in a public golf course venue.
Anyone traveling to the Hartford area looking for an affordable, yet top notch course to play should try Topstone. And they're right near Bradley International Airport.
After only a few holes you'll quickly understand why the Golf Channel recognized Topstone as one of the top 5 public golf courses in the greater Hartford area. Many members of the Safari Club thought it should rank in one of the top 5 in southern New England.
WOW!
I had the pleasure of playing this course with my friends in the Safari Club, and from what I saw and heard from other players was that this course is one of the best venues played by far.
The weather was typical fall day, overcast and breezy, but that did not deter play on this parkland layout. The tree-lined fairways were lush with plenty of roll, and the greens were excellent with subtle contours and moderately fast roll. Plenty of bunkers, particularly in front of the greens put a premium on shot making.
The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the meal that was offered was perfect and I can't wait to return, with or without the Safari Club.
Must play if in the area.
Played the course today (9/28) with the Safari Club and had a great time. Everything was top drawer from the course, staff and buffet lunch. Layout was interesting with perfect fareways and true putting greens. A must play if you are in the area.

This course is the best, from start to finish. Excellent condition from the T,s to the greens. The food is very good. Nice layout. All the greens were the same speed. I hope we play this course next year.
Great Course Overall
I heard about the weekday special Topstone was offering from a TV commercial and wanted to give it a try. $48 for 18 holes and a cart with a $5 voucher for the restaurant after the round. Overall friendly and nice staff, no complaints. The course itself is beautiful, surprisingly green for the lack of rain we've had. The greens are difficult and weren't the best, pretty bumpy and not maintained all too well (divots and ball marks not fixed). Loved the layout of the holes, lot of fun slopes and angles on the holes. Only other comment would be a lot of bunkers in front of the greens, which penalizes a bad shot (which I personally enjoy). Will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone.
Top Notch
Located in South Windsor, about four miles north of the Buckland Hills Shopping Center, I rate Topstone as one of the top ten reasonably-priced, public courses within 30 miles of Hartford. Their weekday special the day I played was $48 regular, $38 for seniors, which included a cart and $5 restaurant voucher.
Getting there is somewhat difficult as it is not directly off any major road. I suggest you plug it into your GPS and go from there.
Upon arriving, the colonial-style clubhouse (pro shop & restaurant) is impressive as it sits on a hilltop overlooking the course below. The bag drop, carts and 1st and 10th tees are convenient to the parking lot. Two very large, relatively, flat putting greens are in front of and behind the clubhouse.
Our threesome was able to tee off right after the last group of the morning’s men’s league (10 am) and we finished our round in four hours without any waiting.
The course yardage ranges from 5097 – 5500 – 6113 – 6546 yards. From the 6113 yd white tees, where I played, the four par 3’s are 140-170 yards, and four par 5’s are 460-505 yards. The 505 yd 5th is a true 3-shot par 5 as it is also all uphill. The course is partially in a residential area on the first 2 holes where there is OB left next to the street. A railway line runs adjacent to the west and north holes with two (#3 and #4) on the other side of the tracks. Other than a small brook that bisects the course on a few holes, there is no other water to contend with.
All the tee boxes, fairway and greens were in pristine condition in spite of no rain for over a month. The fairways are wider than most courses in the area and the trimming of trees and brush that borders each fairway made it feel like the courses the pros play. If you miss the fairway there was always a clear path back into the fairway and not a lost ball like many courses in central Connecticut. The greens are without major undulations and thankfully, relatively flat.
TIPS: All the yardages in the following tips are from the middle/white tees. Three keys to success at Topstone are: good course management, safe club selection off the tee and high approach shots. With ten of the par 4’s under 400 yards something more accurate than driver off the tee is often a good decision. But, if you are a bomber and can hit a driver fairly straight, then go ahead and rip it. Because bunkers protect the front of the greens on more than half the holes a high approach shot over them is a good shot to have in your bag. There are only five holes that need your full attention. They are:
#1) First tee jitters? Just DO NOT hit a slice or anything right on this hole. A deep valley gobbles up balls going right of the fairway center. #3) At 309 yards and OB down the right, consider 2 medium irons or something less than driver off the tee. #7) OB down the left and mature trees down the right means an accurate tee shot is a must. #9) Although a short (285 yd) hole, a deep valley in front of the tee box, can be intimidating. You must carry your tee shot only 150 yards over the valley so don’t top your ball or hit a worm burner here. Also anything right off the tee is big trouble. #17) This dogleg left hole has a green protected by a very large tree about 225 yards from the white tees. A deep valley awaits you in front of the green. You must clear this tree and valley for a shot at the green #18) There are several options off the elevated tee to this dogleg left 343 yd hole. The safest play is driver straight down the fairway leaving yourself a 9 iron or PW to the green that is protected by yet another bunker in front. A riskier choice is cutting close to the left corner to get within shorter wedge range.
Upon completion, we found the restaurant refreshing than the upper 90’s on the course and the beer was icy cold. Ali, our bar person was very friendly and our drinks and food came quickly and were delicious.
This course is truly a top 10 course in CT. From the time we arrived till the time we left we had no qualms or complaints.
A Northeast Gem
Course is beautifully maintained, fun, and fair with wider, tree-lined fairways and mildly sloping greens. There were some sloping and hilly fairways, but it was definitely a course that makes you feel relaxed over each shot. The starter was very friendly and accomodating. The food was above average, and the staff friendly. The one drawback was the many bunker placements directly in front of greens. Though this dies not affect the overall quality of the course.
