Good course, Superior service
As for the course itself, this is a classic Nicklaus course - lots of variety, requires some thinking and shotmaking, and it has undulating greens. The course is carved out of very hilly, wooded terrain near the Potomac River south of DC. I played it in mid-November on a day when it was cloudy and in the 50s, with enough wind that you had to factor it in. The bent grass greens were nice, but the fairways were also bent. They were beautiful, but you have to be on your game with irons because the ball will not sit up like it will on bermuda, so you have to clip it clean. I loved the course, but had but one complaint - my Bushnell GPS NeoWatch did not pick up the course, nor could the GolfNow GPS on my smartphone. I am hoping they will get the course in their systems, because I had a hard time with some yardages. There are a number of carries across ravines, and that can throw off your distance perception, so the watch would have been handy. Bring your Bushnell range finder, I guess.
Now, for the best part - I have never had as good service from the pro (I believe his name was Tim Taylor) as I had there. He asked if I had ever played there, and when I said no, he proceeded to give me a description of a number of the tricky holes. He also explained that the 9th doesn't bring you back to the clubhouse and apologized that the grill wasn't operating so I couldn't grab some food to take out with me. I had brought snacks but made sure there was water on the course. There wasn't, so he ran in and got a bottle of water for me. After my round, I was in the parking lot putting away my clubs, and he was out there helping someone else. He called across the lot to me by name, to see how I liked the course. Besides the already excellent service, the fact that he had committed my name to memory from 4 hours earlier was extremely impressive. I told him I would be back and will bring some buddies with me.
Cart path only
No water on the course to drink
Fairways were in horrible condition
Monday round
Love this course but the greens were still a little bumpy from the aerification 7/10 days prior to be charging 95 in my opinion.
Rough was chunky as well...
Still beats a day at work.
Overpriced
Beautiful layout. Course was in great shape despite the aerated greens. Range has crappy mats to hit off of. Practice green is too small. Saw cart girl once in 18 holes. There is no turn, so you can’t get beverages at the clubhouse. No video screens in the carts. Great course but overpriced.
Too expensive
We got in under a deal but it's normal price is too high
Interesting Layout
The course is in great condition. The one critique I have for the course condition is the second cut on the greens need better trimming; it was inconsistent and no defined borders around the greens. This course has no halfway house so you have to wait for the drink cart but there was only one out when I played so you could go over an hour without seeing it again. Make sure you grab what you need before heading out. This is not a course you can walk due to the layout. The holes are far apart from green to next tee for a lot of the holes, but I like it cause you aren’t bothered by others on either the teebox or green.
Expected Better
Perfect day to play golf. Course was in great shape but pace of play, not starting on time, not having some kind of snack or something at the turn. We only saw cart lady after the first 9 holes and didn't see her again. Probably won't play here again for the cost. Better values with just as good conditions are out there.
6/30
One of my favorite courses in the area. Unique/challenging layout, conditions and staff all excellent. Grill food/service was excellent.
See you next time.
Great course
One of the best courses right outside Northern Virginia. Well worth the price, considering how expensive other courses are becoming.
Terrible pace of play at nice course
Course itself is in good shape and has a great layout, but a 5.5hr round on a Friday morning is unacceptable. There were 4 groups waiting to tee off on 1 and the tee times seemed to be stacked every 5 mins, not allowing for any spacing between groups. Ranger and pro shop didn’t seem to care.
