Good challenge
Played this course a few times a few years ago, so first time since its changed its name and setup. Have to say it's evolved into a good challenge and definitely has an American style feel to it - been fortunate enough to play a number of courses across the pond!
Given we're still at the start of the golfing season, the course is in pretty good condition. There are are parts where in a few weeks time you can see the course will be where it needs to be, but I was suitably impressed.
Some really good holes with the majority in front of you, but even those where the green isn't visible from the tee, present you with the classic risk and reward choice.
An enjoyable experience and one that will be repeated at some stage in the next few weeks!
The winter has not been kind
Winter has done Berrington no favours at all, they're on a mix of tee matts, tee boxes and randon bits of gound as places to tee off from so that's not a brilliant start. The greens look like they are really struggling the grass coverage looks heavily interwoven with a sort of mossy covering too, but in general there are a lot of scruffy areas around the course which is a shame as it has potential. The pace of play was pretty torturous too when we played
Up and coming course
Had a great round at Berrington. Course was in very good condition for this time of year.
Mostly winter tees and a few well used tees but work being done on new and current tees.
Fairways were quite dry allowing for bounce and roll which is great considering the recent weather.
Greens were running well with a few exceptions as they had been aerated recently.
Overall very happy with condition and can't wait to play it in spring and summer
Very disappointed
Played here a couple of times last year and really enjoyed the two rounds. Today was nothing like that though. Pace of play was extremely slow. We had enough after 3 hours and 20 minutes on the course with only 13 holes played. Two 4 balls were holding everyone up, though a 2 ball behind them has one of the players walking round drinking beer. The course had been closed the week prior, due to the bad weather. That been said the course does not in my opinion appear to handle the rain well. Course was boggy in areas but the real concern for me was the state of the tees. Most were on matts. They were absolutely awful, small and uneven with bricks around that were in various states. The first tees matt was the only one which was done in a decent fashion. That brings me onto the placing of these tees. Most were miles in front of the normal tees and drastically shortened the course. Half the time it was 7 or 5 iron off the tee. Couple that with the slow play we felt obliged to tee off instead of waiting longer and hitting a longer iron. Greens were not in a good condition at all. Very patchy. Played a course just down the road two weeks ago and the greens there were in perfect condition. Putting green was a joke.
Superb course
I’ve played this course a number of times over the past couple of years, every time it gets better. All the work they have been putting in is really starting to show. Very well looked after too, the fairways still running firm, very little sign of autumn leaves, greens still as per the summer. The winter course layout, off proper tees and proper greens, is a real challenge. Some holes are shorter than the summer course but you can tell it’s been properly thought out. Will return for sure in the next few weeks.
First time
Challenging course.love the day here. Friendly people and staff.
Worth a visit
Interesting course with a few narrow tee shots that then lead to open fairways. Evidence of some repair work on a number of holes, but nothing that affected play.
Will definitely be returning.
A course under renovation in parts
This is an unusual course, quite American in style, significant dog legs, one a total right angle, The disappointing feature was the tees were very wet and slippy. If they want to protect the tees as they need to, why aren't there mats to stand on ?. Tip if it has been raining for a few days leave well alone. Probably after a dry summer spell this will be ( eg 2/3 years time ) quite a good challenging course. We shall be back in 2024
Very boggy
Played on Saturday morning as we payed £25 each we got told they was airing out the greens so every green just full of holes not point trying to read a put at all defiantly should tell you before hand and no way should it be full price , and loads of the tee boxes very boggy and flooded this was after it hadn’t rained in a few days so not very good signs I have played this course a few times in the past and it was never like this
Rain
Course totally unplayable. Should have been closed.. Told we would revice refund and still nothing. Great course in good weather
Loved it
Finally managed to get an early tee time for our three ball and we were not disappointed. Lots of well laid out and interesting holes. Local knowledge again comes into play on a few holes, and with distances etc even though every hole did have 150 markers on which is very much appreciated. Greens very good and course condition was excellent despite the dry patch. Lots of work going on around the tees, bigger teeing off areas so the grass gets some rest and repair. Pace of play was decent and even though the course was very busy we got round in 4 hours. A little waiting around here and there but nothing excessive or annoying. Couple of holes had the Rainford bypass alongside but the rest felt like we were in the middle of the countryside with only the wildlife and fellow golfers for company. The course is not that old but has a lot of mature trees and woodland which gives an established feel to the course. Great having rakes back and getting that pin out. A wonderful four hours.
A mixed day!
Started on time- no problems, course in good nick especially greens lots of on course maintenance in progress - mowing of winter greens!! (In July!!)
Caught up with a four ball and a playing member told us that they were the last group of an inter-club match and there were three matches in front of them behind a very slow 4 ball! Were advised to skip a few holes, which we did only to be berated by a member of the front inter club 4 ball match!
Missed yet another hole to overtake the slow 4 ball!! Would have been nice to have been told we were going out behind 4 x4 ball matches when we booked in!!
Managed to get 18 holes in but not the best day's golf we've had at Berrington! Course in great condition but it was a hard drag of a round jumping holes to get the 18 in!!
