This will be a nice course someday
People were nice when we arrived but the course had a lot of construction going on. Yes, they are trying to improve thing and it will be a good looking course when its all done. But the price was not worth it with a couple of temp tees and holes. Should of been informed before booking. The back nine took forever to play with three members dilly dallying on every shot. Four holes were empty in front of them and they would not let us go through. No Rangers that we saw. Nice member etiquette. I think i wait till next year and hope they are done. Should be good by then.
Poor maintenance
Situated in a prestigious area of Wilmington, this course is a shame with lack of maintenance. Fairways, bunkers, greens are not playable!
A bit run down
The greens were poor, uneven, and missing grass. Early October is when the course should be in the best shape and this one isn't. Rough, uneven fairways with most balls ending up in poor lies. Sand traps were mostly dirt and stones.
Meh
What is wild is Rock Manor and Delcastle are both owned by the same company as Ed Oliver and both of those courses are worlds better maintained than this historic gem. I think the management is just bad, which is sad as this is a good location for a decent course.
Meh
I play here alot, its close to my work. It's not what one would call a "good" golf course, bunkers are a mess, carts are on their last leg, cart paths are falling apart, lots of surly retiree golfers. But, its relatively cheap and relatively convenient so location location location wins out.
Good value
Course personnel were great. Start was on time and pace of play was great. Course was really drying out on the fairways which helped tee shots some but some rain is greatly needed. Greens were in pretty good shape and a bit fast on the sunny slopes. Some of the bunkers could use a bit more sand around the edges. Overall it was a good round of golf.
Fine for a cheap round, hackers paradise.
First off, to generations now this course is colloquially known as Porkey's. The course is fine if that's what you're expecting, just "fine". Greens were better than I expected but that's not saying a lot. The ground is rock hard so your ball lands and can go a multitude of directions. It's hard to hit a pure shot when the ground and turf has zero give to it. Bar area is nicely redone and staff is friendly. There's not really anything interesting to report about the course design. I really only play this course with beginners, it's fine for that or a round where you just want to get out and don't really care about your game.
