Last Time
I want to be fair in this review by saying that this course is centrally located and is pretty much the only offering for public courses in the area. You could pay the overpriced Angeles National or play the 5 1/2 hr round at Brookside in Pasadena but this really is the only municipal game in the area. I have played it about 7-8 times now over the last 4 years and I keep telling myself I will never play it again. This will be the final time.
'Let me start by being fair and lead with the positives. Friendly staff, good bar/restaurant where you can get a solid meal. Not a quick grab and go spot. This place has freshly cooked food and a full bar setup with a decent view and nice seating area. Staff is always pretty friendly and the course is fairly priced. It is also located in Burbank which is centrally located as far as LA is concerned.
The bad: I simply hate the course design and conditions. The holes are just laid out all wrong. The types of shots that this course forces you to hit are so silly that you would never have to play that same shot on any other course anywhere in the world.
279 yard par 4. followed by 233 yard par 3? Really? You pretty much hit iron off every tee save about 4 holes. It's a "Target Golf Course" which normally is called an Executive Course. But this course remains a 5600 yard "normal course". If you are lucky enough to his the middle of a 10 yard wide fairway par 5 then you will most likely lose your ball on the second shot due to the unkept rough and dirt piles.
This course eats balls for breakfast lunch and dinner. The rough is not kept at all leaving massive mounts of dirt and high grass followed by dead areas of rocks and soil right next to it.
The other problem is that none of the sprinkler heads have yardages and the carts don't tell you either. You only have the 200,150,100 at best on some holes and thats it. Also, the bunkers have more rocks in them than the canyons themselves.
I am really not trying to be negative but There are so many other courses to play.
Overall I think the people just end up here because of the lack of golf options in LA.
On the other hand if you travel 45 minutes NorthWest towards Thousand Oaks you will find Tierra Rejada which is another canyon course and in great shape and way more amazing. Sunset views from up on the cliffs are outstanding. Plus you have about 4-5 other golf courses out there that are all reasonably priced, open, and all different in their own way. It's kind of a hidden little pocket of fun, inexpensive public courses that are kept up better than De Bell and some of the others in the LA area.
Just My Two Cents
Great Value in LA County
Great location for an early bird back 9. Weekend 18 is always busy but that's normal fellas. The pace was still pretty darn good. The course is understaffed right now so be patient. Course quality is pretty darn good other than a few knocked down trees but mother nature is gonna mother nature. Nothing that effects the play on the fairways. The greens were actually pretty darn good and the second cuts are getting better each time I've visited. Downsides? Very few yet there are a few. One of them is nothing bad on the course itself but more the people playing the course. FILL YOUR DIVITS. Why is this always such a hard thing to ask folks to fill them in? Real issues is the cart paths and some fairways are under construction so some holes are kinda eye sores but nothing too unbearable for the cost. Carts are decent nothing fancy so bring your view finders. The drink carts are nice but tough to find them sometimes. Other than that the course has some beautiful views and they truly have a wonderful testing 18 holes. Nothing terribly hard but still test you enough to push your game torwards being a better player. Favorite hole right now? I would have to say. It's 12 par 3. Fun blind. Over all great time and great place to catch some holes with your buddy's.
Great Course and in Great Condition
Great Course with very Nice Greens. Price very reasonable and pace of play smooth. Ask for Senior Rate under $40 with cart during week. Must say carts a little old but well worth the price. They do have some landscaping going on currently.
Very good condition
This course is a Diamond in the Burbank Hills. Greens in Great Condition and Great Senior Price.
Love the course, but there is some constructions going on!
I have been playing here about 5 times, and love the scenery and the course layout.
There is construction going on and around hole number 2 and 3, but you will get around to it.
Today it was really slow and I used about 5 hours for the round.
I will come back at some time though ;-)
Slowest course in LA
Everytime my buddies and I are here, we get held up by incredibly slow golfers. Yesterday it was two guys each playing five balls. We were watching them, as we waited, driving their cart from ball to ball… It’s not worth golfing here anymore. The course doesn’t do anything to enforce pace of play and it’s brutal. Which sucks because it’s a beautiful course.
Different layout; greens have movement
Course has lots of elevation changes and doglegs. Greens are tough putts with slopes and undulations. Carts are beat to crap and could use upgrades.
Second hole still has construction happening which shortens hole and turns it into a par 3. Third hole has a massive fallen tree in the middle blocking everything just before the little ravine in front of the green.
Had a good time. Everyone friendly. Course conditions good.
Very nice course
The course is short but player needs club management and accuracy.
DeBell
Great location in the hills and fun layout! They’ve had issues with weather effecting course conditions but I can’t wait to play it once the rain stops
Fun and moderately challenging
Tucked away in the foothills of Burbank, Debell was a pleasure to play. The views were excellent, course and clubhouse premium and well maintained, and other players very accommodating to two green players on the course for the first time.
The layout of the course is unique. Many of the holes are wrapping around a hill or mountainside or have elevation drops or gains. The fairways are medium width and lined by moderate to heavy vegetation most the time, so losing a ball or two is going to happen. The combination of these characteristics makes this a moderately challenging/technical course.
Will play again and recommend to friends.
under construction
they have fee course at under construction that wasn't good
Nice course
Some holes need some love and care but overall the course was nice. Pace of play was good and cart girl was very nice and seen often.
Nice views!
Nice little course. Very short from the back tees even. 2nd and 3rd holes are under construction and both play like par 3s (wasn’t told that at booking or even check in).
