Good layout/poor condition
The course is a good layout. Long even from white tees but the course is in awful condition. Bare spots, spotty fairways etc.
Everyone should play at least once
Golfed using deal of the day on golf now. Great value! Forgiving fairways.
Totally disappointed in the bumpy greens... seemed like the greens have not been rolled to smoothness for a long time.... I question the competence of the greenskeeper on their condition.... even the fairways were sparce Will not play here again unless the greens improve in putt ability...
Golf on Base
The course has a very fun and challenging layout. Greens were in very good shape, as they always are. The fairways were a little discolored, but found good lies all the time. Just winter grass creeping in I guess. The bunkers had beautiful white sand in them. The pace of play was great. All around, it’s great for the money. I recommend playing Marine Memorial if you haven’t had the chance.
favorite
One of my favorite courses. Quiet, no homes around, no traffic. Just pure golf. Beautiful weather and a pretty darn hard golf course to boot.
Nice course
Public welcome. Say at the gate you’re there for the golf course and they are very friendly to the public. Great course layout, long holes, well kept greens, and won’t lose many(if any) balls
Where a buffalo roams
I've heard the rumors, I've had other people tell me they saw it, but I've never seen the buffalo that sometimes roams the fairways at Marine Memorial. My buddy even took a video of him roaming the driving range. The course is very nice, sometimes red tail hawks float overhead. Sometimes, you can spot a Apache helicopter or Osprey aircraft doing maneuvers just north of the golf course. But I'm still waiting for the buffalo. Even saw a rather large coyote this time.
The fairways were a little sparse in spots but not too bad. The greens were in their usual great condition. The prevailing breeze was from the east, making the long par 3 eighth a little less difficult. The only real slow holes were the par 3 17th and par 4 18th when 3 foursomes decided to play the holes together. Still, we finished the round in just under 4 hours. The weather was ideal for a mid-January Southern California day.
Great place, great people
Great course, but even better people working there. Great shape for winter and after heavy down pit of rain days prior.
Long and wide open, will challenge you at spots, but will forgive you more than anything.
No houses
Still one of the best courses in the area. A little hard to get to since it's on the Marine Corps base, but worth it. No homes to hit, no water to speak of, but plenty of trees and, if you get lucky, (I haven't yet) you can spot a buffalo roaming the fairway or driving range.
Saw a coyote who followed us for a couple of holes. Red-tailed hawks, and rumored white-tail deer are also on property. But be careful when you try to park. The spot for 'general' is not for general parking, it's for a General of the United States Marine Corps. And they don't like you parking there.
Old School Great Course
I play here often - and always love it -- the atmosphere's great and you always run into a bunch of fantastic veterans or active duty folks.
The greens are fast and challenging and the distance is long (fairways well watered), plus you're not getting a lot of roll from the fairways like a lot of other courses in the area.
Holiday Week Slowness
Great day, great course conditions and friendly staff. Might want to make use of a Marshal on busy days. Very backed up on the back 9. Decided to leave early.
Good time at Camp Pendleton
Had the chance to play Marine Memorial after reading generally positive reviews. Mainly the course lived up to those reviews which was great to experience. Some observations based on my round today.
- teed off at 12:20. Just made it through 18 holes before the sun set around 5PM. Wouldn't been an issue except that the moment we made the turn there was a pile up at hole 10 which prevailed for the entire back 9. No ranger evident to fix things. Quite a shame as the front 9 had a really great pace to it only for it to be ruined on the back 9.
- Saw the course buffalo grazing on the range as I was finishing up on #18 which was a treat
- nice assortment of holes, some with good elevation changes.
- with the drought conditions you could tell they were prioritizing the greens which were very lush (in many cases spike marks could easily be seen all across the greens). Bunkers were in great condition and the fairways were generally good although splotchy in terms of grass varieties (some lies were tight and others were lush) and It's worth noting that there is no rough on the course based on how it is cut.
I did have two minor gripes which I think are easily fixable:
- No easily found yardage markers. Some holes had 150 marker discs in the fairways, some had 150 poles, some had 100/150/200 poles and some had none. Nothing consistent though. And there was nothing on the sprinkler heads anywhere. Really wish yardage markers were more evident and consistent.
- No hole diagrams anywhere to understand the routing. Not on the scorecards nor on the hole markers. This would have been nice to have to know how a hole is routed.
Tough Greens
I have been playing this course for the past couple of weeks. The course is in fair conditions, the greens are some really fast rolling with some challenging positions. Recommend it.
Great Value
Got a Golf Now Hot Deal for $29.50 after taxes and fees with a cart. Teed off at 12:20 and was done by 4:30. I was very satisfied with the course. Greens were is very good shape and bunkers were beautiful. A little burn out in fairways and around green. A small bucket of range balls cost only $2 and a hot dog, chips and soda was about $6. Really great prices all around, I will definitely be back.
