Great challenge on a much improved course!
Wow what a fair and challenging course. For you low handicappers, this course requires quality driving to match your normal scores from the back tees. If you miss the greens, the rough and fast greens will challenge you to chip it close. The afternoon breeze will also challenge you on the long holes going south.
The condition of the course has really improved and the best I've ever seen it. The greens are smooth, fast and tricky. All bunkers have the nice white consistent sand. Thre are still some muddy areas but it would take major maintenance to fix the drainage. I wouldn't let that sway you from this course. Enjoy!
Course is in great condition. Greens run fairly quickly but are true and not bumpy. New bunkers are really good. The old ones practically did not have any sand in them at all. It is now fair game if you land in the bunkers. Longer than average course from the white tees and really gets harder when hitting back into the wind. I will continue to play here. Good course with fair pricing. You will enjoy playing here.
Nice play
Signed up for base access ahead of time--breezed right though the gate. Parked right in front next to the General/Colonel parking spots. Had booked a tee time but didn't need it. Started as a single, teamed up with another single early and another two at the end. Greens were great condition and fast. Finished in 3.5 hours. Traps had fresh sand, tees were good. Snack bar was a little bare bones but the hot dog was good. Range balls were $2.00! Twilight rate allowed time to finish before dark. Medium difficulty course. Recommend it!
peaceful
Played with no one out. Empty course. Can't get much better than that. Fast, true greens. And, even if you are not in the military, read the posts on every tee box about the wars and conflicts that the Marines have been in over the past 200+ years keeping you safe. Our favorite, since my playing partner's dad fought in it, is #12 Chosin Reservoir, during the Korean War.
And it's a beast of a hole. And if you're lucky, rumor has it a bison roams around the grounds, and you can most every time see Apache helicopters flying overhead.
Great course at a terrific value
Marine Memorial has never disappointed. The bunker renovation from earlier this year has been a welcome change to the course. The course conditions were top notch and you can tell they take the time to water enough to ensure full lush grass in all playable areas. Greens were aerated ~1 month ago and you couldn't even tell it occurred. Greens rolled smooth and quick compared to other local courses. Marine Memorial is a hidden gem that is a fun experience.
Best Military Course in San Diego County
I’ve always thought this course to be the best layout. For one reason or another, it had been lacking my best recommendation. Probably because it gets si much play thatit’s hard to perfect the little things, i.e. consustant well groomed bunkers, even cut fairways, enough water during the summer months. However, I found it to be in the best shape I’d ever seen or played it. Especially the greens!!! Awesome!!! My best suggestion...get rid of all the cut trees, shrubbery, trimmings, etc! It’s unsightly and if you have to play out of it, it sucks! Not that you don’t deserve to to hit out of trouble if you hit into it! It just looks trashy.
Veteran's Day @ MCM
I am a newer player and appreciate the ease of play. Wide fairways, no water and seemingly easy bunkers to avoid make this a great course. I think for the advanced player the only real challenge is the distance.
All in al a great day! OOORahh.
lost no golf balls
old fashioned course with mature trees and ample fairways.... due to the openness of the course I actually played the whole round with the same ball!
front 9 is a bit dull but the back 9 has some elevation and is more interesting.... worth the hassle of getting on base
Another great round
Greens were a little slow due to being punched a week or so ago but other than that I love this golf course.
marine memorial course
a long tough course recently upgraded. new sand traps and fixed some drainage issues. do not play this course on a weekend b/c the young marines are out there hacking away! slow slow and slow. but weekdays are great.
A dose of History with your Round!
We absolutely LOVED playing this course. From the moment we entered the gates of Camp Pendleton, it was a pure treat! We saw some of the military equipment and training areas, and the course was a beautiful oasis in the middle of it all.
We started with the Par 3, nine hole course. While it was pretty rough, it was a great way to get warmed up. Excellent driving range and practice area.
Each hole features a plaque telling a bit of history, and we had the good fortune to be paired with two actual Marines who were visiting from the nearby 99 Palms base. According to the starter, Civilians have been allowed on the course for about 10 years.
The greens were in beautiful condition (despite being punched just 12 days earlier). Staff was very friendly. Course is quiet and serene. Beautiful. Pace was okay - we played on a Saturday and waited a little on each hole, but still finished in less than 5 hours. Some very interesting holes, back nine much more scenic than the front.
I'd highly recommend playing this course (and the par 3) if you're in the area. Access into the base requires only your driver's license and proof of insurance (or car rental agreement). It was definitely a memorable experience.
Great layout
Layout was varied and interesting. Elevation changes made it challenging without extreme punishment for slightly off shots
Great course, great greens
A bit of a drive to get there but well worth it. Greens a great and fairways are descent. No patches. Well kept course. Will be back
Great Course, must play.
We were concerned about gaining access to the base but the guards were really helpful an we took sufficient I'd (driving license, passports and ESTA,s) some were not held up too long. The course was fabulous one of the best we had played and for a public course it was in very good condition, the staff were very friendly although the bar/restaurant closed at 5pm some couldn't get a drink after our round an the half way house was closed on the day we played. Apart from that we thoroughly enjoyed playing here and would recommend anyone to come an play the course. Beware whilst the greens are in god condition and run true they are lightning fast and tale a bit of getting used to.
Nice and fair course. Will come back!
Don’t care much for the front nine. Too many trees. Need to cut back or shape them a little. The back nine was a lot better, more open, nice greens and sand traps were in good shape. The weather was perfect.
This Place is Awesome
Great golf course. I'm a member at a local country club and friends of mine said that I had to try this place. They weren't lying. It is pure golf. Great layout. Great greens, great bunkers and we finished in 4 hours. So, if I ever do decide to play somewhere other than the country club, this is the place.
