57 years of golf bliss at El Macero
Call in sick for work if you get the invite to play this private club west of Sacramento. It's such a treat to play such an old-school layout kept in prime shape by the staff of Troon Golf.
The fairways dogleg left and right through the trees, forcing you to shape shots over and around them. It's all about angles and choosing the right place to miss at El Macero, tucked into a nice neighborhood just a mile from I-80. There's no real water to speak of, but I guarantee you will hit at least one tree at some point. It's inevitable. The breaks on the greens are subtle, giving you a chance to make a few. El Macero, home of the UC-Davis men's and women's golf teams, regularly hosts a college tournament, so it's got the chops to test even the bombers.
There are plenty of amenities, a retro clubhouse, pool, tennis courts and a woodfire oven installed a couple years ago that serves up great pizza. If you live in the area, it's definitely a club to consider joining.
I was hosted by a few members during a media day celebrating the club's 57th anniversary. They were all quite friendly and proud of their club. It's a great place with a nice bit of history. Did you know that Tiger Woods, Ronald Reagan, Byron Nelson and Joe Dimaggio have all played here? Why not follow in their footsteps? It won't disappoint.
El Macero Golf
Great course with a challenging layout. Apparently this course is used for NCGA championship play and collegiate tournaments. I can see why. Greens and bunkers are excellent.
Non golf amenities and service is very good. It is a private club but if you get a chance to play it is one of the better courses in Northern California.
