Morro Bay Golf Course

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in slightly over 4H twilight. $15 to walk super twilight, played part of the round as a 4some, part as a 3some and part as a single. Foggy, 65 and calm. So foggy I could often not see my playing partners the last few holes, much less the green.

Kikuyu tees were the weak link. A couple were closed for reseeding, which is needed. Okay overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots.

Kikuyu fairways were lush and nice to play from.

Mostly kikuyu rough was fairly lush, not high but thick. It would quickly kill your shots, very little roll, one bounce and stop.

Only a few sand traps on this layout. Was not in any, but they were well maintained.

Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast and were smooth. You could make irons stop with large ball marks on these greens.

Usually no drink cart here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Recommended.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4H, 15M with Paul, Austin, Kenny, very nice guys to be matched up with. $15 to walk super twilight is an excellent value. Overcast, foggy and around 60 with a little breeze made for challenging golfing conditions.

Really fun, old school course. Constantly up/down hills. While there are some shorter holes to start, this is a deceptively long course because of the hills, usual 1-2 club ocean breeze and the kikuyu. That combination make this this one of the longest 6300 yard courses I have ever played.

If you want a beautiful course ruined by the staff experience this is the place for you

Had a great time playing Morro Bay GC with my neighborhood foursome on Saturday. We played 36, paying $79 for the first round & $28 for a replay after lunch. The burger & beers hit the spot, too.

Cool temps in the am, but highs of 68 in the afternoon & some scenic holes made for a perfect day. Course isn't long, even from the blues, but is challenging - especially some of the greens. I'm looking at you, #12. Shhhh, but one guy in our group took a 5 putt!

Both rounds took around 4:20, but felt a bit longer. We did wait a bit each loop, especially around 6 & 7, but plenty of beauty to take in for first-timers..

We had a blast & are already talking about doing it again, so 8 thumbs up from The Chadwick Group.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4H, 45M with Dale, Lonnie and Gary mid day for $32. Partly cloudy, breezy and around 70 made for nice golfing conditions. However, we played behind the 4some no one wants to follow. Sharing rental clubs, 2 looked like beginners and 2 looked like they had never played before. They were off to such a bad start that the Marshall told them to play best ball halfway down the first fairway to try and move things along. Multiple consecutive whiffs were not uncommon, then they started hitting "do over" tee shots after a few holes? Multiple groups were quitting behind them after the first 6 holes took 2 hours. After two in our group quit after 9, they finally waived us through on 14 fairway. We were finished and leaving when they were on 17 green. It seemed like a lot longer than a 4H, 45M round. Glad I was walking and pacing things at least somewhat. It would have been really irritating riding between shots and waiting even longer. The Marshall talked to them twice, without much improvement. Collectively they had no business on a regulation golf course. Whatever happened to start on the driving range, then play par 3 courses, then executive courses and only when you can at least hit the ball, graduate to a regulation course?

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) mid morning in 4H, 15M. Paired with my neighbor Dale, Ju Ju and Larry, very fun group to play with. Foggy and overcast conditions around 70 + the lack of roll from the kikuyu make this course play hundreds of yards longer than you would presume based on the scorecard yardages. $45 to walk mid morning is steep IMO.

Like the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. The par 3's play downhill and the par 5's play uphill, so the scorecard yardages are deceptive. Tough walking course with all the hills.

The Kikuyu tees were decent, mowed down and well maintained.

The Kikuyu fairways were lush, mowed down low, they were nice to play from.

The mostly Kikuyu rough was maintained low and has mostly good coverage A few hard pan areas farther off the fairways.

Only 3 sand trap on this layout. Looked decent walking by, few foot prints.

There are many greens where you will have putts that break 2' to 4' if you are any distance from the hole, with the break predictably being toward the ocean. The area in front of greens is mowed down like a links course, so everything from a putter to a lob wedge may be a viable option from 15 yards off the green. Beside and behind the greens the rough is taller.

Customer service was excellent, checked in and on the 1st tee shortly thereafter. This course would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a hilly, tree lined course less than a mile from the ocean. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Not a tight layout and it offers some tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock on a clear day. No drink cart today, Marshall out patrolling and friendly Starter.

Probably because the low and high temps do not wary significantly all year, the playing conditions of this course are very consistently good to excellent. Fun course, Recommended.

Got there around 3pm and there were about two dozen people waiting for the super twilight rate. A family of six on vacation had the first two super twilight tee times. Grandpa, grandma, dad, mom and two kids. Several looked and acted like they had never played on a regulation course before. The Marshall allowed them to combine their two 3omes into a 6some? One guy asked why the 6some, and I listened to the Marshall's explanation that he wanted them to have a good time on vacation?

I would presume the other roughly 20 people teeing off directly behind them were as unamused as I was? Did the Marshall really think anyone playing behind Ma and Pa Kettle and their clan were going to have a good time? After it took around 40 minutes to play the first 2 holes, I dropped out of my group and shifted over to the wide open back 9, then finished the front 9 later with no one around. So 40 minutes for 2 holes, then around 2H, 45M for the other 16 made for one of the longest sub 3.5H rounds I have ever played.

The course? Good overall.

Rode the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in around 2.5H first out playing on a B-Day special. Thanks Morro Bay! Partly cloudy, calm and around 60 made for a nice early morning round.

Fun, old school layout. Some doglegs, a couple of blind tees shots over the crest of hills. The area around the greens is mowed down like a links course. All 18 holes a player can run the ball onto the green if need be. Few sand traps, not long by modern standards, the courses primary defense is the smaller sized, quick greens that have alot of break.

The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Mostly kikuyu, so even though it is hilly, do not expect ball to roll hundreds of yards down the fairways. Expect lots of unlevel lies once you leave the tee.

This layout would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. Not tight overall, but there are numerous tight shots with OB closeby. No water on this course.

The tees were well maintained. Mowed a little high for my taste but not many unfixed divots and mostly level.

The fairways had good coverage, pretty lush for kikuyu. Not much roll on these fairways.

The rough was more thin than lush overall, but played decently.

There are only I think 2 a few sand traps on the course. Was not in any, but they looked decent walking by, few foot prints.

The smallish poa annua greens were recently vericutt but still putted nice. Medium fast, smooth for po. They held approach shots very well. No large tiers or mounds, these greens are mounded. Usually back to front, with putts breaking toward the sides and front. There are few straight putts and anything above the hole and you are in trouble on numerous greens. Be prepared to play some big swinging putts on these greens.

Par 71 layout. Three par 5's, four par 3's. The last three par 3's are 232/192/239 from the tips, but play downhill, so they play shorter but are still a bear. The par 5's are 496/468/512 from the tips, but play much longer due to a combination of being uphill, the prevailing wind and/or the kikuyu.

No GPS on the carts, small driving range that is shorter clubs only. Customer service was excellent, checked in and right out to the 1st tee. No drink cart today, but friendly staff out on the course. Recommended.

Walked the Whites (5633/67.7/112) in a Charity Tournament last Saturday. Typical Saturday tournament POP, well over 4.5H. Clear and calm conditions around 65. Played with Mike, Doris and Jody, we had a good time. $54 to walk Saturday morning was sticker shock compared to what I have been paying in the desert!

Really enjoy the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. Some doglegs with a couple of blind tee shots. The area in front of greens is mowed down like a links course, so everything from a putter to a lob wedge may be a viable option from 15 yards off the green. Beside and behind the greens the Kikuyu rough is taller, thick and plain needs to be avoided.

#10 green side is the only sand trap on the course. Looked to be decently maintained.

The downhill holes do not play as short as you expect because of the lack of roll on the Kikuyu. The uphill holes play longer than you would expect for the same reason. So scorecard yardages are VERY deceptive. Morro Bay GC is an old school layout around 100 years old. Not a tight course and offers tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock. In spite of the ocean views, this course would remind you more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a VERY hilly course with tree lined fairways less than a mile from the ocean. The layout is constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. The customer service was excellent. Drink cart out making the rounds. Small warm-up range that is basically pitch shots only close to #1 tee. Fun course, Recommended.

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) in 4H with Vince in breezy conditions in the 50's. $32 to walk, tough walking course with all the hills. We occasionally waited on the walking 2some in front of us but things moved well overall.

You do not expect a hilly course less than a mile from the beach. This layout would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. Not tight, the tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down.

Played here with my wife on a trip to the Central Coast. Course was recommended by one of her co workers, and I said let's check it out. I'd lived in Santa Barbara for a few years and played many of the courses in the area, but never Morro Bay. Now I regret not driving the extra bit to play here more often when I had the chance.

Loads of elevation changes here. Most holes play slightly to significantly uphill or downhill. As well, many fairways have some side slope, so lies on approach shots are often a mix of up/down with left/right, which does make for a bit of a challenge. Many of the par 4's struck me as a bit shorter, allowing me to play a 3 or even 5 wood off the tee and still have a wedge into the green. Not much in the way of bunkers, but plenty of trees to avoid if you get off the fairway. Greens were smooth and true, if not too fast. We started out at 7:30, so the greens were still pretty wet and slow and they got faster as they dried out. As I'd consider Torrey Pines one of my 'home' courses, I was possibly better prepared for the way the greens played. Everything slopes towards the bay and/or marsh to the south of the course. Putts that might initially look flat need to be considered in light of the overall slope of the property.

Overall, we really enjoyed it and will definitely come back to play again!

Coming from the valley, any of these courses along the pacific is a treat. On a summer weekend, the difference can be as much as 40 degrees. That's really nice.

The course layout is not complicated. Few blind tee shots, but generally pretty straight. The greens can be shaggy at times, but the fairways are generally in good condition due to ample amount of moisture in the air.

The pace is not very good. Since we're at 8 min tee time separation, things can get hairy. First few times here, the front nine goes fairly smooth if you tee off before 9. But, and this has happened every time I have played here, the tenth hole is a disaster with up to three groups waiting on the tee box. I'm not sure if they're letting people start on the tenth. Once the wait is over, things do generally roll smoothly.

Overall, a good course and a good location. Staff is friendly and accommodating.

This is one of those love it hate it courses.

Those that love the course -
Views of the ocean/bay/dunes/Morro Rock that are unbeatable. Short course that plays longer than the yardage because of the Kikuyu grass, which offers very little or no roll, especially on short/high shots. Greens that are challenging due to the significant speed variations from up/downhill and the frustrating inability to read breaks. The entire course is set on a hillside above the bay. The difficulty of reading breaks is due to the same hills and the ocean influence that cause the speed changes. What you see is rarely what you get on putts. The perfect coast weather or even the morning fog that lends an air of mystery and charm.

Those that hate the course -
The Kikuyu is difficult to play if you can't fly the ball and is very very sticky. Think Bermuda on steroids. The tough greens because of huge speed variations and very difficult reads. The uneven tees on many/most holes. The longer than average rounds due to tourist/weekender play and the numerous 3+ putts that plague anyone not possessing a sound putting stoke (These greens identify good/great putters and expose those whom mistakenly think such about themselves).

Those that embrace the challenges the course gives and stop long enough to enjoy the spectacular views and the idyllic weather have a deep fondness for this well priced ideally situated coastal gem.

Those that only want perfect, everything in it's place, predictable, cookie cutter, course conditions and play-ability need to stop and smell the golf.

Sometimes golf is meant to be enjoyed as we find it.

As is probably evident by now, I love the quirky/challenging/unique aspects of this course. Combined with the location/views/weather, I think this course is well worth a visit. Or several.

Golf course was really good. Course was in good condition. Played at 2 PM on a Sunday. Excellent pace of play. Shorter course, but makes up for it with challenging greens. As a female player playing from the whites I found some of the par 3's quite challenging distance wise. Really good pricing, and excellent for students! Would definitely play again!
