The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

The course track is pretty neat !
However I think the prices could be lowered especially with the greens aerated. Fairways was in good shape but the greens were not anything close to being ready to play on
Warm Sunny Busy Day
Staff very cordial.
Very crowded day due
to first warm sunny day!
Greens are very fast and in
nice condition. Course in good shape too.
Busy but still good
First time out at Crazy Horse and the course was good and in very good shape. Had a late tee time and got stuck behind very slow players. Multiple groups on 1 hole several times in the round but no marshal in sight to speed things up. The layout is exciting on the front 9 with doglegs and elevation changes to challenge you, back 9 is old school flat and straightforward but enjoyable. I’ll be back with the hope that play moves faster!
Quiet setting and nice conditions
Crazy Horse offers a great combination of solid conditions and a quiet setting just outside the hustle and bustle of the big peninsula courses.
Staff here is always friendly and the restaurant usually stays open until the last golfer is off the course (or longer). Layout isn’t super long for those bombers out there but the fairways are pinched in just enough to put a premium on accuracy but wide enough to keep the average golfer in play.
Right now the fairways are a bit damp but better than others in the area. Greens are a tad on the firm side but roll smooth at a perfect medium fast pace. Bunkers had absolutely perfect white fluffy sand in them.
Pace of Play is generally very acceptable here often under the 3 1/2 hour mark or less on weekdays if you catch it just right.
Definitely a recommended course when in the Monterey Peninsula especially if you want to catch a round on your way in or out of town.
Good course management challenge
Great value, near the Monterey Peninsula. Elevation changes and doglegs. Need to be patient to score well. Fun restaurant. Private club, but they release a few tee times per day on Golf Now. Similar to nearby Laguna Seca Golf Course.
It was fun, needs a little TLC in spots.
I would play it again, once a year, a little $$ pricey for an average course. The best thing about it are the greens and bunkers are well kept with the greens running fast and true! Liked the layout.
Excellent course, poor food and beverage management
I played on a Saturday and teed off mid day. This is one of my favorite tracks in the area, the course is kept well and the design is fun for all levels.
A very unfortunate and poor choice on management, at the turn on hole 9, our 4 some tried to order food and drinks. To our great disappointment, the kitchen was closed at 2pm…. On a Saturday with mixed sun and clouds on the weather forecast.
Now granted the weather wasn’t 80degrees nice and sunny, but there were plenty of people playing in front and behind our group and it felt really out of character for a nice golf club to do that. When asked why, the response was “it is slow”. Now I could see if there was unforeseen circumstances, or a Monday late afternoon before a rain, but this is a nice January Saturday and they good lost business.
Lastly, when the clubhouse onsite worker was asked if we could bring our own drinks on the course since they couldn’t offer to sell anything they replied, “No”.
For such an epic and dreamy golf course, I was greatly disappointed in the service and response from staff.
I mean not to deter anyone from playing here, I just hope this helps the management make better decisions in the future.
Course is freaking money
Course was in great shape, just a little wet from rain, greens are absolutely great, fast and smooth greens. Well worth the $
Fun Course
Not very long, but the greens are tuff to read. Not much sand either.
Wet weather
Even though it was cart path only, we enjoyed the round. Nobody else out there, so pace of play was nice. The staff found a club that was left in the ruff, and drove it out to me. It wasn't mine, but that was a nice gesture. Even greeted me by name, classy.
Perfect day at a fun course
We caught a perfect day in Salinas (72 degrees, light breeze) at Crazy Horse in December. I really enjoy the variability of the layout along with the generally excellent conditions of the course, it really feels like a private club experience.
It's a bit of a drive from San Jose, but definitely worth it as compared to the alternatives either in cost, pace of play, or conditions.
Great freaking track
All I gotta say Is the greens are amazing and talking to some members they say they get better cant wait to come back
