The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

Crazy Horse never disappoints!
It’s been a while since I played here and I don’t know why we don’t come here more often. I had an additional question/request and the pro shop staff was extremely nice and accommodating. We played as a 2some with a 4some two groups ahead and still finished in 3 1/2hrs (on a Friday afternoon!) Course conditions were good, greens excellent. Great value for the price…a true hidden gem. We’ll be back soon…thank you!
Love this golf course!
I almost always book as a single and end up playing with some great folks. The staff is awesome and I just really love playing here.
Love the layout
Great course tucked away. Greens, tee boxes, and fairways were in great shape. I wish they had a yardage book or course map because there are quite a few blind shots. Felt like I was guessing. Will be back soon!
Quality
Tournament quality no question incredible good condition really enjoyable golfcourse beautiful buildings super friendly staff it was really pleasure to play here
9/10 just because no signs to find the holes
Crazy Horse
Crazy conditions post tournament, the course was wide open and there were no holes that were not in great shape. Loved it!
Punch green without notice
I would like to request a refund for my round. Golf Now has done a great job in the past of giving notice or punched green before booking a round. Unfortunately there was not notification and the conditions were terrible. The course is usually great to play, but very disappointing to come to the course to find the greens punch without notification. If I would have known I would have booked a round at a different golf club. The greens were like hitting from bunker. Absolutely terrible. We found out of the conditions at check in and by that time it was too late to book another round.
Disappointed
Upon checking in, I was informed that Golf Now was supposed to delete all tee times for this day as the course was throwing a tourney. We had our 4 players enroute driving an hour to get there. We were told that we wouldn’t be able to play and that we need to contact Golf Now to get refunded. There was no offer of getting a comp round by the club; no offer whatsoever for anything for the inconvience. I called Black Horse and they were able to get us on at 12:50! They saved us…and were disappointed that Crazy Horse did not offer us anything for the inconvience! The young gentleman in the pro shop said he knew the pro at Crazy Horse and was going to call him and share this story. They were shocked there was no offer of anything, comp round,.
Not very good in winter conditions.
Pace is slow (2h50min front 9) no marshall to help. Muddy. Restaurant wait time is super long and closes rather early. I was hungry and cold while constantly need to wait for clearance between shots.
Fun Course
We have played here before in dryer weather conditions. It had rained quite a bit, and the cart path only rules were in effect. So, we go in a lot of walking. Still a fun afternoon of golf.
After the flood
There was a flash flood through the course a couple days before we played. The course was in remarkable good shape. The greens were well maintained, ruff not too tall. It was cart path only conditions, but we finished in four hours.
Solid conditions tee to green
Crazy Horse Ranch is often called the hidden gem of the Monterey Peninsula. I would have to agree. With so many great public and private courses, it’s easy to overlook this track. Rest assured that the conditions of the course are up there with the best of them (ok maybe a notch below the very best) of both the Publix and private courses in the area.
It’s a fun layout with smaller greens similar to PG and Del Monte.
Best of all is the restaurant will stay open until the very last person is off the course!
First time here
First time playing this course. There were not a lot of hazards for me, or I didn’t manage to find any. I am an intermediate golfer and there was plenty of room for occasional slices on my drives.
Fairways, greens and t boxes in good shape. Some soft spurs on fairways but to be expected with all the rain.
The greens were brutally small and fast for me.
On hole 10, my best shot of the day, at least a 225 yard shot right down the pipe. When it came time to move down the fairway, ball couldn’t be found anywhere. Luckily there was no one behind us. All four of us looked for at least 5 minutes., ball was gone.
Beautiful course and layout. Golf shop and restaurant nice, personnel polite and friendly. Thinking I might get membership. Unlimited golf and cart is hard to beat these days. About an hour from me.
Will definitely be back
Fun track
Fun and mostly forgiving layout. In pretty good shape with small greens and course is on the shorter side. Signage could be better
Sanded Greens
the course had excessive sand on the greens. this detail should have been listed on Golfnow.
Love this course
Always a good time playing this course. Wasn’t super busy maybe due to the greens being worked on. Would like to see some ball wash stations & bummed that kitchen closed so early
Worth the drive
First time ever playing this course. All I could say is “Wow!”. A hidden gem. Welll maintained and beautiful layout! Definitely going back now that I’ve been through the entire course. Highly recommended! A must play in these neck of the woods.
