Tough Scene
I knew Old River wouldn't necessarily be in country club condition when I made the drive from Modesto. But I didn't quite expect what I saw when I got there.
Sometimes the course conditions are so bad, you just have to laugh and enjoy the walk. It's a sad tale because Vic in the Pro Shop/Bar was super nice and accommodating. This is only the 2nd course I have revieiwed (out of many many many dozens) that I would not recommend going to play, unless you are checking off a list of courses you absolutely need to play (like my dumba**),
Decent conditions for the price
Given the reviews of this course, I had some trepidation coming here to play, but the location near the freeway was convenient for me, and so I decided to risk it. I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. Now, this course isn't anything like a country club, but then the greens fees aren't that high either. The fairways are shaggy and there are some hard pan and brown spots, but less than most of the other local muni courses in the Central Valley area. In fact they probably over watered in some places which created areas of mud. The greens were in decent shape but they were very slow, you really had to give your ball a good rap sometimes. As for the layout, it is pretty flat which made it a breeze to walk. There is some variety to the holes so that it is not freeway golf. There are some forced carries over a small canal in a few places. Overall, I think as long as you are not expecting too much, this course was a pleasant surprise, and I'll likely play it again.
bad fairways
It was hard to differentiate the fairways from the rough, the course played pretty easy because of how open it was, but the fairways really need some water
Once a nice course; now in disrepair.
Front nine ok; back nine tight overgrown and in need of maintenance. Carts were operable but rickity. Best to walk if conditions (winds) are favorable. However, it's cheap to play and easy access from freeway.
This course should not be on your list
Course was in horrible shape. Usually I can find a least one thing good about a course, but in this case I truly can not! The only saving grace is that fortunately I only had to drive about twenty miles to find this nightmare.
